Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is locked and loaded for the UFC Vegas 34 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which takes place this Sat. night (Aug. 21, 2021) from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, streaming LIVE on both ESPN and ESPN+. Main event duties fall to middleweight contenders Jared Cannonier and Kelvin Gastelum, who collide for a spot in the 185-pound title chase. In the lightweight co-headliner, veteran bruiser Clay Guida battles fast-rising Olympic star Mark Madsen.

Round 1: Cannonier sticks an early jab, fires his right kick high. Gastelum digs a low kick. Cannonier finds a counter left hook, as well as a kick to the mid-section. Gastelum answers with a good combo. Calf kick from Cannonier. Quick jab from the shorter man. Hard 1-2 counter from Cannonier, who is looking accurate from the back foot a couple minutes in. Cannonier’s kicks are landing clean to the mid-section and calf. Gastelum coming up a touch short with his punches, but he’s landing kicks of his own. Clean cross from Cannonier. 3-2 from Cannonier. Gastelum’s left hand keeps missing, but the low kick scores. Gastelum very nearly finishes a takedown before the bell. 10-9 Cannonier

Round 2: Gastelum goes back to the takedown early, but this one is stuffed. Long jabs from Cannonier. Gastelum rips the body smartly. Gastelum lands hard with an inside low kick. Another. Gastelum is the more mobile man, and it’s bothering Cannonier now that he is kicking less. Gastelum lands a pair of huge left hands. 1-1-2 connects for Cannonier. Round 3: Gastelum sticks some early body shots, and Cannonier counters back with a blitz. Lead leg high kick from Cannonier. Big connection from Cannonier drops Gastelum! Somehow, he bounces right back up. Cannonier patiently continues his attack, but Gastelum answers with a takedown attempt. Cannonier defends the shot and lands a knee. Stiff jab from Cannonier. Another counter right scores for Cannonier. Gastelum works the jab. Gastelum seemingly stuns Cannonier for a moment with a right of his own. Cannonier denies another shot. Round 4: Gastelum goes to the body with a left kick to start the championship rounds. Cannonier flurries and connects with a few rights, prompting Gastelum to clinch up. Glancing head kick and right hook from Cannonier, who is again moving and managing distance well. Gastelum digs a hard low kick once more. Round 5: Cannonier finds a pair of right hands early, but Gastelum stays in his face. Back to the low kick for both men. Solid right hook scores for Gastelum. Double jab elbow lands clean for Cannonier. Stiff jab from Gastelum. Both men land, then Gastelum completes his first takedown of the fight. Immediately, Cannonier pops back up and fights hands. Gastelum scores a bit of control time along the fence before his foe breaks free. Gastelum swinging big with the left. Gastelum is pressuring, but neither man scoring many clean connections. Round 1: Guida opens with a low kick. Madsen whiffs big on a right hand after scoring with the jab. Guida lands a combination, prompting Madsen to press into the clinch. “The Olympian” lands some knees, but Guida circles away. Right hand from Guida stuns Madsen! The wrestler grabs the clinch and presses Guida into the fence briefly. Hard knees land for Madsen. Madsen lands on the break with punches. The pace slows as the fight moves back to range, and Madsen lands a low kick of his own. Guida sticks a couple right hands. Guida finds a low kick near the end of a competitive opening round. 10-9 Guida

Round 2: Guida defends a takedown and lands a flurry in response. Low kick from “The Carpenter,” and another. Madsen answers with one of his own. The two trade right hands. Stiff jab from Madsen, followed by a long right. Another hard calf kick connects for Guida, followed by a heavy three punch combo. Madsen lands a good knee in the clinch. Guida calf kick connects once more. Madsen finds the jab. Guida hides a left hook behind the right. Back to the jab for Madsen. Guida glances with an overhand in response to a low kick. Round 3: Madsen lands some early jabs, but Guida cracks him with a right soon afterward. Madsen is really committed to the jab. Round 1: Low kick lands for Sherman. Trading punches. Porter with a leg kick. Porter doing well in the early exchanges. One minute in. Counter 2-1 knocks Porter back. They trade low kicks. Hard counter rights from Sherman. Porter continuing to pursue as they exchange, Sherman getting the better of it. Porter low kick answered in kind. Porter comes back with a good right hand two minutes in. Another leg kick exchange. Big exchanges, sharp counter right by Sherman. Counter combo, leg kick checked. Both land clean on the fence. Round 2: Hard punches from Porter to start. Sherman landing counters and low kicks. Hard right hand knocks Sherman back as Porter walks through return fire. Big exchanges, heavy Porter overhand a minute in. Sherman digs a right downstairs, eats an overhand. They trade calf kicks, then Porter comes back with an overhand right. Porter to the body. Round 3: Porter with a slow-mo swarm on the fence, looks for a single-leg, can’t get it but lands a right on the break. Sherman body kick and leg kick. Porter continuing to land punches. One minute in. Sherman looking unfocused and kinda out of it. Sherman low kick, Porter right hands. Doubles up the right this time. Left hook upstairs. Two minutes in. Porter shoots, denied. Low kick. Sherman spent, still manages to crack him with a right hand. Combo from Porter. Eats a leg kick, continuing to outland Sherman. Two minutes to go.

Nice body shot from Porter as the exchanges continue. Sherman takes a low blow and appears to be milking it a bit from sheer fatigue, but he elects to continue after a minute. Both men seem reinvigorated with a minute to go. Porter still getting the better of things. Sherman landing his share of counters and leg kicks. Porter fakes a shot and follows with punches. 10-9 Porter.

135 lbs.: Trevin Jones vs. Saidyokub Kakhramonov

Round 1: Jones catches a head kick and ties up, only to get thrown to the mat. Kakhramonov grabs a guillotine in the scramble and jumps guard on it. He loses it a minute in and Jones puts him on the fence. Two minutes in. Knee from Jones. Jockeying for position. Kakhramonov reverses, gets reversed in return. Two minutes to go.

Jones still keeping him against the fence. Kakhramonov lands some knees downstairs, can’t separate. One minute to go. More of the same, both men landing occasional clinch strikes. 10-9 Jones.

Round 2: Kakhramonov tries a body kick. Jones catches a leg kick and puts him on the fence again. Kakhramonov reverses, separates a minute in. Big combo by Kakhramonov stings Jones, who looks for a single-leg. Unable to get it and they separate two minutes in. Kakhramanov swinging wild as an exhausted Jones tries to tie up. Jones looks for a single-leg, can’t get it. Clubbing right by Kakhramonov on the break. Slinging heat with two minutes to go.

Hard body shots by Kakhramonov. Now Jones manages to drag him down into half guard. Short punches from Jones. Looking for the back, then mount. 10-9 Kakhramonov.

Round 3: Kakhramonov comes out throwing kicks. They trade right hands. One minute in. Kakhramonov continuing to press forward. Jones ducks a right hand and grabs a body lock. Continuing to press Kakhramonov against the fence. Knee to the body. Two minutes to go.

Ref demands more work from Jones. Short punches from Kakhramonov. He reverses, then separates, swinging big. Jones shoots again, gets caught in a deep guillotine. Kakhramonov adjusts it to a power guillotine and puts Jones to sleep in seconds.

155 lbs.: Austin Hubbard vs. Vinc Pichel

Round 1: Hubbard looking aggressive early, trips after taking a low kick. Jockeying for position on the fence. They separate. Hubbard body kick and right hand. One minute in. Knee inside. Good low kick exchange. Jab from Pichel. Hubbard with a front kick. Pichel answers in kind. Good right cross and low kick from Hubbard. Two minutes in. Low kicks from Pichel. Hubbard right hand, Pichel 3-2. Pichel tries a head kick, eats a teep. Hard low kick by Hubbard with two minutes to go.

Pichel with a low kick and body kick. Hubbard tries some fancy kicks, lands an eye poke. Back to the combinations. One minute to go. Low kick from Pichel. Hubbard counter right. Round 3: Pichel hurts Hubbard with a combination in the early going and ties up on the fence. One minute in. Good balance from Hubbard and he separates. Elbow from Pichel. Hubbard ducks a left hand and grabs a rear waist lock, dragging Pichel to the mat. Pichel gets to his knees, gets dragged down, turns into top position two minutes in. Half guard for Pichel. Hubbard trying to use the cage to stand. Pichel snuffs it out. Almost to side control with two minutes to go.

Hubbard turns to his knees, eating a couple shots on the way, and works his way to his feet. Knee from Pichel, still attached. Hubbard exits with a knee. Slick counter uppercut from Hubbard, who gets knocked over by a low kick and turns it into a takedown. One minute to go. Elbow and hammerfist from Pichel off of his back. Pichel kicks him off and hurls punches at him. Trading bombs in the final seconds. 10-9 Pichel.

125 lbs.: Alexandre Pantoja vs. Brandon Royval

Round 1: Pantoja immediately changes levels for a double-leg, dragging Royval to the mat and hunting for back control. Some crazy scrambles already. Ncie elbow by Royval a minute in. Continuing to roll around. Royval hunting a leglock, throwing hammerfists and elbows to try and set it up. Awkward 50/50 sort of position. Royval looking for the straight ankle lock. Pantoja gets free and latches back onto Royval. Two minutes to go.

Rear waist lock for Pantoja. He drags Royval down and they continue to scramble before returning to the feet. Slick back take by Royval. Pantoja scrambles out, eats a body shot, comes back with a counter right. Big right hands form Pantoja. Royval popping him with lefts, gets blasted by a right that hurts his eye with a minute to go. They’re continuing to slug it out. Big right cross by Pantoja. 1-2. Royval absorbing them so far, lancing him with high-speed shots in return. 10-9 Pantoja.

Round 2: Back to the high-speed exchanges. Pantoja shoots, can’t get it, Royval looking to punch on the way up. Body shot lands. Pantoja grabs a rear waist lock. One minute in. Both hooks in for Pantoja. Full body triangle. Hunting the RNC and it’s in deep. There’s the tap.

145 lbs.: Austin Lingo vs. Luis Saldana

Round 1: Jab lands for Lingo. Both check low kicks. Nasty body kick from Saldana, tries a head kick behind it. Lingo marches in and has to avoid a flying knee. Saldana right hand, Lingo left. Good left hook from Lingo a minute in. More aggression from Lingo, who’s sporting a cut beside his right eye. Saldana checks a low kick, lands a body kick, and catches him coming in with a jab. Huge body kick seems to bother Lingo, who comes back with jabs and avoids a spinning elbow. Saldana low kick. Body kick two minutes in, Lingo comes back with a right downstairs and gets popped with a straight left. Double hook by Lingo. Hard check hook wobbles Lingo. Spinning back kick to the body behind it. Another body kick. Two minutes to go.

Yet another check hook by Saldana met by a left from Lingo. 2-3 connects for Lingo. Cuffing right by Saldana, tries to spin again. Counter jabs. One minute to go. Saldana tries to jump off the cage, lands a straight left. Right hand from Lingo, who avoids a flying knee. Landing jabs, punishes Saldana for trying to spin. Hard low kicks by Saldana. 10-9 Saldana.

Round 2: Lingo comes out super aggressive. Saldana’s left foot is injured and he’s not moving well. Low kick from Lingo. Saldana combo, 2-3. Lingo launches punches, eats a knee downstairs. Saldana shoots, denied, separates with a knee a minute in. Counter left by Saldana. Straight right. Leg kick. Left hook from Lingo. Jab exchange. Good body shot by Lingo. Two minutes in. Left hook by Lingo. Spinning back kick comes back at him. Saldana low kicks, Lingo jab. Lingo to the body, tries to blitz after eating a leg kick. Saldana side kick. They separate. Big trades on the fence. Saldana low kick. Lingo counter right, avoids a spin. Saldana sending out elbows. Straight left. One minute to go. Round 3: Lingo swinging big, fights off a single-leg. Again. Spinning back kick from Saldana a minute in, can’t get a single-leg. Another spin. Counter jabs by Saldana as Lingo presses forward. Saldana shoots, denied. Saldana jabs, Lingo left hook. Another spin two minutes in. Knee to the body for Saldana. Lingo to the body. Left hook up top, sharp cross. Another spinning back kick from Saldana, then a head kick. Saldana Superman punch, gets caught by a right hand. Two minutes to go.

135 lbs.: Brian Kelleher vs. Domingo Pilarte

Round 1: Kelleher backs Pilarte to the fence, rips a body shot, and takes him down. Pilarte regains guard. One minute in. Short punches from Kelleher. Staying tight, chipping away. Two minutes in. Kelleher postures up for some bigger shots, including a left hand. Another good left with two minutes to go.

More good shots from Kelleher. He stands over Pilarte and lands an axe kick to the body. Pilarte swats him and tries to stand, but gives up guard again when Kelleher threatens a guillotine. Nasty elbows from Kelleher. 10-8 Kelleher.

Round 2: Once again, Kelleher pressures Pilarte to the fence and takes him down with a double-leg into guard. Back to the short GnP a minute in. More of the same. Two minutes in. Pilarte trying to work off of his back but getting nothing done. Kelleher passes ti sude control with two minutes to go.

Kelleher latches onto a guillotine as Pilarte scrambles, but loses it and ends up on the bottom in guard. He tries it again, Plarte still too slippery. One minute to go. Good elbow by Pilarte, briefly threatens an arm triangle. Kelleher turns to his knees and takes him down into half guard. 10-9 Kelleher.

Round 3: Yet again, Kelleher pressures and double-legs. He hauls Pilarte to Kelleher’s corner before slamming him down. Looking for the back. Back to guard a minute in. More of the same. Two minutes in. Pilarte unable to get anything going off of his back as Kelleher picks his shots. Two minutes to go.

More GnP from Kelleher against the fence. One minute to go. Kelleher turning up the heat late. 10-8 Kelleher.

135 lbs.: Bea Malecki vs. Josiane Nunes

Round 1: Malecki tossing out kicks as the short Nunes presses forward. Nunes low kick and body shot. Nunes continuing to push forward and punish the body a minute in. Big flurries to the head against the fence. She backs off, lands a leg kick. Left hand downstairs. Two minutes in. Malecki cracks her with a head kick and right hand before circling off. Nunes Superman punch, Malecki right cross. Low-high left hands from Nunes. Trying to bomb against the fence, big left hands upstairs. Malecki really struggling to keep her at a distance. Two minutes to go.

Nunes continuing to jump into range with Superman punches. Malecki tries a spinning elbow. Good lefts from Nunes and knees against the fence. One minute to go. Malecki body kick and low kick. Another swarm from Nunes. Malecki covering up against the fence, gets destroyed with a single overhand left.

Final result: Nunes def. Malecki by KO (punch)


205 lbs.: Fabio Cherant vs. William Knight

Round 1: Hard low kicks from Knight to start. Tries to go high. Cherant with a left hand downstairs, eats another hard low kick. Again a minute in. Head kick attempt. Cherant lands another left to the body. Combination upstairs. Body shot. Knight whiffs on a 1-2, lands a pair of leg kicks two minutes in. Cherant body shots, Knight low kicks. Overhand left by Cherant and a jab behind it. Two minutes to go.

Cherant to the body again. Heavy body kick from Knight. Cherant digs a body shot of his own and tries to chase him with left hands, but Knight catches him coming in with a left hook that sends “Water Buffalo” face-first to the mat.

155 lbs.: Ignacio Bahamondes vs. Roosevelt Roberts

Round 1: Both men meet in the center and start whipping jabs and kicks at each other. Sharp right hand from Roberts, who takes Bahamondes to the fence. Bahamondes manages to separate and land a counter right. Roberts 1-2 a minute in. Bahamondes knocks him over with a low kick. Trading leg kicks, heavy right cross from Bahamondes. Roberts keeping pace in the boxing. 1-3. Bahamondes tries a spinning back fist two minutes in, then lands a punch the ref mistakes for an eye poke. Trading jabs. Roberts two-piece, eats a snap kick downstairs. Roberts with a well-timed single-leg attempt with two minutes to go.

Bahamondes limp-legs out and they get back to trading. Combinations from Bahamondes on the fence. Good body kick, Roberts answering with jabs. One minute to go. Bahamondes tries a head kick and Roberts gets in deep on a takedown attempt. Rear waist lock. Bahamondes again manages to escape, firing knees and punches. 10-9 Bahamondes.

Round 2: More good exchanges to start, favoring Bahaomndes. Roberts landing more stiff jabs but not as many power shots. Bahamondes limo-legs out of another level change. Low kicks landing. Bahamondes with an axe kick to the body, then lets him up. One minute in. Spinning back kick and another left to the same spot. Roberts shoots, denied, pulls guard again. Bahamondes lets him up. Hard right hands inside, tries to spin. Two minutes in. Front kicks to the body. Vicious left hand to the body, right cross up top. Roberts comes back with uppercuts. Bahamondes continues to target the body, tries a Hug Tornado. Two minutes to go.

Roberts shoots, gets sprawled on, tries to pull guard. Bahamondes with some noncommittal strikes while standing over him. He lets Roberts up. They trade rights on the fence. One minute to go. Palatnikov gets his arm free a minute in. Slick mount by Brahimaj. He pins a wrist, moves to the back, and looks for the RNC. It’s in real deep but Palatnikov’s fighting admirably.
