Neil Melanson left toe

Xtreme Couture Las Vegas head grappling coach Neil Melanson has made a significant sacrifice to keep himself involved in mixed martial arts, by having the second toe on his left foot removed instead of resting his foot for a year.

Melanson had the toe removed last week and spoke to ESPN.com about his decision to opt for surgery rather than sit for a year.

“I broke it in the first tournament I ever competed in. Then over the years I broke it again and two years ago it snapped. It just didn’t want to live I guess.

“It’s really not a big deal to me. It’s just a toe. I guess when you love the sport and you’re committed to it, you don’t let little things like toes get in the way.”
