Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away days after losing by TKO in a bout in Montreal, Canada.

On Saturday Jeanette Zacarias Zapata faced Marie-Pier Houle in a pro boxing bout at the IGA stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After sustaining a number of powerful shots at the close of round four, Zapata was unable to return to her corner. The referee went in to stop the fight. Zapata then went into convulsions before being stretchered out of the arena and being transported to hospital (per Montreal Gazette).

Yesterday it was announced that Zapata had died. She was just 18-years-old.

The event’s promoter Yvon Michel announced her death on social media. “We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and especially her husband, Jovanni Martinez, who was at her bedside until her last moments,” read the statement (per CBC).

Houle also released a statement on social media. “I am devastated,” she wrote before offering her “most sincere condolences” to Zapata’s husband and their family.

This morning it was announced that the Quebec coroner’s office will investigate the “probably causes and the circumstances” of Zapata’s death.

CBC reports that Zapata completed a neurological exam in her native Mexico before travelling to Canada for the bout.

Zapata was born in Aguascalientes City, Aguascalientes, Mexico. She made her pro debut on January 27, 2018. Before travelling to Canada to face Houle, she fought five pro fights in Mexico and earned a record of 2-3.
