Claressa Shields: ‘I’m Nowhere Near Homophobic’

Claressa Shields insists she’s not homophobic after protesting DC Comics’ bisexual Superman.

Claressa Shields’ next fight is not in the boxing ring or mixed martial arts (MMA) cage, but the battlefield of Twitter.

Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-weight world boxing champion, took to Twitter on Tuesday to express her disappointment that Jon Kent, son of Clark Kent and Louis Lane, is bisexual in DC Comics’ Superman: Son of Kal-El comic book series.

“I googled it this morning and I’m disappointed they would even do that. He’s always been in love with Lois Laine!” Shields argued before being informed that the Superman in question is actually Clark Kent’s son. “Don’t make it no better.

“I’m nowhere near homophobic, I just don’t think that cartoon characters should be bi-sexual or gay. Leave the kids alone. Don’t push an agenda on children. To me, that’s confusing kids. If a teenager or adult decides to be bi or gay, congrats to them. I have no problem with that.”

Shields’ argument appears to be that having any representation of LGBTQ+ characters in children’s media is part of an agenda. A 2021 poll from Gallup found that approximately 5.6% of all U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Shields currently splits her time between professional boxing (11-0) and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), where she holds a 1-0 record. She fights Abigail Montes at the 2021 PFL finale on Oct. 27.
