Chookagian won the first fight by split decision.
Two former UFC women’s flyweight title challengers will square off once again.
Following a report from MMA Ideas, MMA Fighting confirmed that Katlyn Chookagian and Jennifer Maia are lined up for a January 15th rematch.
Chookagian (16-4) got her title shot by beating Maia at UFC 244 in November 2019. She lost by third-round TKO to Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247, but followed up by thrashing Valentina’s sister Antonina in a lopsided decision. A first-round TKO to Jessica Andrade soon followed, but ‘Blonde Fighter’ has picked up consecutive decision wins over Cynthia Calvillo and Viviane Araujo.
Maia (19-7-1) has a 4-3 record under the UFC banner, most recently getting back above .500 with a decision over Jessica Eye at UFC 264 in July. The Brazilian’s title shot occurred after she armbarred Joanne Calderwood, and she took Valentina Shevchenko the distance but obviously wasn’t near a win. One concern for Maia is she’s missed weight twice, including for the first Chookagian fight.
A featherweight bout between strikers Giga Chikadze and Calvin Kattar is expected to serve as this card’s main event. It’ll also double as the UFC’s first show of 2022.
