The victory electrified longtime fans of “The Last Emperor,” including former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” was cageside to watch Emelianenko — as well as a bevy of other Russian fighters — do work on the Showtime-televised event.
This is not the first time Nurmagomedov was cageside for a Fedor fight. “The Eagle” was on the scene when the ex-Strikeforce headliner was battling Fabio Maldonado in St. Petersburg back in summer 2016, shouting instructions from his seat.
Emelianenko (39-6, 1 NC), who turned 45 back in September, is expected to return at some point in 2022 to finish out the remaining fight on his Bellator contract; however, nothing is official at this time. As for Nurmagomedov (21-0), he retired from competition back in late 2020.
