The UFC showcased the battle for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in the main event. We had current Champ, Jan Blachowicz, who was on an impressive 5-fight win streak, sporting a phenomenal 28-8 fight record, coming back to defend his title for the second time – after handing Israel Adesanya the first loss of his career. On the other side of the Octagon, we had the returning BJJ black-belt contender, hoping to make good on his second attempt at championship gold – with his first resulting in unanimous decision defeat to Jon Jones at UFC 172 in 2014. Glover Teixeira had not stepped inside the Octagon since November 20th, of last year, but was still coming at this as the #1-ranked contender with a 32-7 record and some heavy hands.

Ultimately, the belt is now coming to England, after Glover submitted the Champ just three minutes into the second round via Rear Naked Choke. The 42-year old newly crowned champ is now the oldest first-time champ and second-oldest champ* in UFC history, as well. Add to that, most submissions and most finishes in the LHW Division… and ‘The Brazilian Pitbull’’s record-breaking abilities just keep going! After the championship belt was wrapped around his waist, Teixeira said that, by capturing his first title in his 40s, he confounded common opinion about ageing fighters and their ability to compete at the highest level.
*Oldest champ in UFC History record is held by Randy Couture.

Meanwhile, the co-main event featured our second title fight today, this one was for the UFC Interim Bantamweight Championship, between #1 ranked, Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan, with a record of 15-2, who was looking to redeem himself after his DQ loss to Aljamain Sterling by reclaiming the BW belt against #3 ranked, Cory ‘The Sandman’ Sandhagen, with a 14-3 record.

Also on the card, we had a highly-anticipated Lightweight match between Islam Makhachev and Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker. We also had an eagerly awaited Welterweight tilt between, ‘The Leech’ Jingliang Li, and the undefeated phenom, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev.

In addition to that, on this stacked ‘Free PPV’ card, we had an exciting showdown between top-10 Heavyweights, Alexander ‘Drago’ Volkov and Marcin ‘Tybur’ Tybura; as well as the Light Heavyweight scrap between #7 ranked Magomed Ankalaev vs. #8 ranked Volkan ‘No Time’ Oezdemir in our main card opener… where Ankalaev extended his win streak to seven in a row after this decision bout.

Our featured prelim bout, which went to decision, between Strawweights Amanda Ribas and Virna ‘Carcara’ Jandiroba, did not disappoint as part of our extensive eight-bout undercard.

This week the guys’ picks heading into the 14-bout UFC 267 PPV event were:

Both: Blachowicz
Both: Yan
Both: Makhachev
Both: Volkov
Both: Chimaev
Both: Ankalaev
Both: Ribas
Both: Tukhugov
Both: Duraev
Both: Zaleski
Zane: Oleksiejczuk, Eddie: Gamzatov

Overall, this now 14-bout card saw two exhilarating first round finishes, two impressive KO/TKO’s, four sweet submissions (including our Main Event), and eight hard-fought decisions, 1 split. Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Glover Teixeira and Khamzat Chimaev; FOTN honors went to Petr Yan vs. Cory Sandhagen. What a wild Saturday of fights we have to share with you, join us to discuss all the action!
