Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, TONIGHT (Sat., Feb. 19, 2022) for the UFC Vegas 48 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on ESPN+, topped by the light heavyweight showdown between Top 15-ranked action fighters Johnny Walker and Jamahal Hill. Before that five-round war of attrition gets underway, middleweight up-and-comer Kyle Daukaus steps into a short-notice catchweight fight opposite streaking “Nightwolf” Jamie Pickett, who agreed to compete at 195 pounds. Veterans bruisers Jim Miller, Abdul Razak Alhassan, and Chas Skelly will also see action this weekend in “Sin City.”

Round 1: Low kicks from Strader to start. Anheliger tries a counter right, blocks a head kick. Sudden takedown from Strader puts him on top in guard. Anheliger working to stand, looking for the switch a minute in. Strader lifts, dumps him down, can’t establish. Jab exchange, body flurry from Strader. Low kick exchange two minutes in. Strader ducks a jab for a double-leg, avoids a guillotine. Anheliger immediately threatens with an armbar and gets to his knees when Strader backs off. Stuck in the front headlock. Two minutes to go.

Good knee and left hook from Strader, who eats knees in return. Strader flurry, Anheliger knee. ESPN+ crashes again for a second, comes back to Strader holding him against the fence with a minute to go. Trading knees, Strader jab on the break. Body shots, low kick. 10-9 Strader.

Round 2: Good low kick and knee from Strader. Nice knee again, overhand left. HE gets a bit too eager and gets floored by a straight right on the counter. Anheliger follows him down into half guard a minute in. Strader manages to work his way to the feet, then bang the body two minutes in. Anheliger hauls him to the fence, lands an elbow on the break. Strader jab, avoids a head kick. Two minutes to go.

Hard knee by Anheliger, absorbs leg kicks in return. More heavy knees after eating a body shot. Strader lands an elbow, tanks a right cross soon after. Counter right by Anheliger with a minute to go. Both fire knees. Both land low kicks, short left by Strader. Low kick exchange. Anheliger tries a cartwheel kick. 10-9 Anheliger.

Round 3: Strader shoots and latches onto Anheliger’s back. Anheliger turns, briefly considers a ninja choke a minute in. Browne elbows. Anheliger manages to separate. Low kick and jab. Strader tries a head kick, lands a body kick two minutes in. Anheliger leg kick. Strader whiffs on an overhand left. Body shot. Anheliger bouncing around but throwing nothing. Two minutes to go.

Lead right by Anheliger. Strader lands a left, then gets absolutely melted by one in return. Herb Dean lets Anheliger beat Strader half to death before intervening.

Final result: Anheliger def. Strader by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Jonathan Pearce vs. Christian Rodriguez

Round 1: Early left hook from Pearce as both men look to potshot. He completes a double-leg despite a rough entry. Rodriguez pops right back up. Knees from Pearce. One minute in. Good balance from Rodriguez so far, can’t reverse position. Pearce changes levels and Rodriguez locks up an arm-in guillotine. It looks incredibly deep, but Pearce manages to stack and pop his head free. On top in half guard, slick attempt at a back take. Two minutes to go.

Rodriguez working his way up from turtle position as they continue to scramble. Pearce still hunting the back, looking to set up an arm triangle. No dice. Back to the back with a minute to go, dropping punches. Rodriguez trying hard to turn into guard, but Pearce adjusts position to stay in a dominant spot. 10-9 Pearce.

Round 2: Rodriguez answers some low kicks with a nasty left hook. He denies a level change, puts together more combinations. He stuffs another shot. Pearce honestly looking labored a minute in. As I say that, he bulldozes Rodriguez down into side control and starts chasing the back again. Back to half guard, great balance as he pins a wrist. The ESPN+ broadcast dies for a bit, resumes with Rodriguez working to stand. He does so, eats a knee. Pearce grabs a body lock and gets thrown to the mat. Rodriguiez hunting an armbar, nothing doing. Two minutes to go.

Rodriguez stands, gets dumped back down. Short punches from Pearce, retakes the back with less than a minute to go. Rodriguez manages to work his way free and land a solid right hand in the waning seconds. 10-9 Pearce.

Round 3: Clean right cross from Rodriguez, then another to answer a flying knee. Pearce dogs his way through into a takedown attempt, only for Rodriguez to jump on his back. Pearce shucks off the hooks and moves to the front headlock. One minute in. Scrambling, Rodriguez retakes the back. Pearce stands, tanks a gigantic elbow. Clean 1-2 from Rodriguez and Pearce double-legs his way back into top position as Rodriguez chases a guillotine. Two minutes in. Pearce trying for the back, angle’s still awkward. Now he’s got his hooks in for a proper back mount with two minutes to go.

The next arm triangle attempt looks better, but Rodriguez manages to turn and get to his knees. Pearce quickly puts his hooks back and and goes back to chasing the choke. One minute to go. Great control by Pearce. Round ends there. 10-9 Pearce.

Final result: Pearce def. Rodriguez by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Mario Bautista vs. Jay Perrin

Round 1: Hard low kicks from Bautista, flying knee just off-target. Perrin hauls him to the fence, eats a knee on the break. Another jumping knee falls short. Solid boxing combos from Perrin. One minute in. Jab exchange, body shot. Bautista gets the better of an exchange in the center and puts him on the fence. Working inside. Two minutes in. Perrin reverses. Jockeying for position. Bautista times one of Perrin’s knees to drag him to the mat. Knee on the way up. Perrin pressing him against the fence. They separate with two minutes to go.

Sharp counter jab by Bautista. Perrin to the body. Strong double-leg, great defense from Bautista in return. Perrin lands a good knee with a minute to go. Bautista comes back with an elbow and shoulder strike. Knees, another shoulder strike, another knee on the exit. He tries to spin at the bell. 10-9 Bautista.

Round 2: Perrin tries a flying knee and eats a combo for his trouble. Good body shot and low kick. Brief clinch. Punching combo from Bautista, counter jab, then a perfectly timed flying knee that Perrin avoids by inches a minute in. Perrin takes him to the fence . Bautista reverses, lands a knee, elbow, and shoulder strike in sequence. Briefly gets Perrin to a knee, flubs a throw, lands an uppercut, and eats a combo on the break. Two minutes in. Back to the clinch. Perrin changes levels and gets him to his seat for a moment. Bautista pops up, reverses, digs a knee to the body. Rear waist lock. Two minutes to go.

Nasty elbow by Bautista, then another after absorbing a knee to the body. Sneaky body shot, shoulder strikes, knee. Perrin tries a combo on the break, lands to the body. Knee by Bautista, solid combo by Perrin in return. One minute to go. Bautista body kick, Perrin straight left. Perrin looks to push forward and walks into a cross. Left hook after eating a leg kick. 10-9 Bautista.

Round 3: Trading kicks to start. Step-back hook by Bautista. Both attacking the legs, Bautista getting the better of it. One minute in. Hard lead right into the clinch. Perrin tries to answer with a whizzer throw, ends up pressed against the fence. Bautista moves to the rear waist lock and tries a lift without success. Perrin reverses and separates two minutes in. Back to the clinch, hard knee by Bautista as he takes him to the fence. Brutal elbows. Dropping punches as Perrin tries to stay standing. Two minutes to go.

More dirty boxing from Bautista. Another hard elbow. Knees, elbows. They trade knees and Bautista dumps him to the mat with a minute to go. Nearly in side control, punching from turtle. Hard knee and elbow on the way up. Another elbow. 10-8 Bautista.

Final result: Bautista def. Perrin by unanimous decision
