Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently updated its official rankings in the wake of the UFC 272 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which took place last Sat. night (March 5, 2022) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring a welterweight main event between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal.
Covington, who captured a five-round unanimous decision victory over his former friend and teammate, holds steady at No. 1 in the 170-pound weight class while “Gamebred” falls to No. 7. More troubling is the fact that Masvidal’s defeat to “Chaos” marked his third straight loss.
Elsewhere on the charts, undefeated featherweight prospect Bryce Mitchell — perhaps best known for gnarled scrotum syndrome — improved his record to 15-0 by putting the hurt on longtime veteran Edson Barboza. As a result, “Thug Nasty” cracked the division Top 10 at No. 9.
Here’s how UFC compiles its official rankings:
Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.
Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).
