Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 56 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TODAY (Sat., June 4, 2022) streaming LIVE on ESPN+ at 1 p.m. ET (“Prelims” undercard action) and 4 p.m. ET (main card lineup). The promotion’s latest “Fight Night” offering is topped by a 265-pound showdown between Top 10 bruisers Alexander Volkov and Jairzinho Rozenstruik, who are separated by just one spot in the “official” UFC heavyweight rankings. Before that titanic tilt gets underway, veteran featherweight Dan “50k” Ige looks to quell the uprising of undefeated 145-pound upstart Movsar Evloev in UFC Vegas 56’s co-main event. Alonzo Menifield, Felice Herrig and Damon Jackson will also see ESPN+ action this weekend in “Sin City.”

UFC VEGAS 56 LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY:

265 lbs.: Alexander Volkov vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Round 1: They trade kicks to start. Volkov the more active of the two in the early going. One minute in. Jab to low kick. Rozenstruik misses with a two-piece. Both land low kicks. Heavy left hook stings Volkov, who comes back with heat when Rozenstruik tries to capitalize. A straight right badly rattles Rozenstruik, and Volkov blasts his mouthpiece out with a follow-up flurry that sends the ref into action.

Final result: Volkov def. Rozenstruik via TKO (punches) at 2:12 of round one


145 lbs.: Movsar Evloev vs. Dan Ige

Round 1: Early combo from Ige. Jabs from Evloev. Combo attempt, 1-2 blocked a minute in. Counter right to answer a low kick. Front kick. Spinning back kick whiffs, jab does not. Two minutes in. Ige double jab, avoids an overhand right. Big exchange in center cage. Ige to the body. He tries to advance and walks right into a flying knee that he somehow absorbs. Evloev now advancing, looking for combinations. Another jump knee just misses. Two minutes to go.

Body kick, 1-2, takedown, back take. Ige makes it back to his feet, Evloev still attached. Back up, back down, back. Nice back elbow by Ige but he gets spun to the mat again. One minute to go. Ige back to his feet, jockeying for position. They separate. Evloev body kick and jab. 10-9 Evloev.

Round 2: Evlev looks for a front kick to start. Switch head kick. Ige tries to pursue with a left hook, lands one. Evloev 1-2. Ige runs into fingers but elects to continue. Evloev sneaks an uppercut in at the end of a combo. Lead uppercut a minute in. Counter right, counter 1-2. Ige’s coming in in straight lines and getting caught. There’s some body shots from Ige, who tanks a flying knee. Two minutes in. Ige falls short with a combo. Low kicks landing for him, cuffing overhand right. Counter left. Counter right soon after. Two minutes to go.

Evloev lands a 1-2, walks into a jab. Body shot, eats a body kick in return. Chopping right inside. He shoots, denied. Ige body kick, falls victim to a long-range double-leg. One minute to go. Evloev landing from guard. Ige really bleeding at this point. 10-9 Evloev.

Round 3: Ige shrugs off a low blow in the opening seconds, then gets wrangled to the mat. Both hooks in for Evloev, landing punches. Ige looking to use the fence to stand. One minute in. Ige makes it up, slung back down. Back up, back down while chasing a kimura. Evloev continuing to show great riding. Two minutes in. Back up, back down, then into front headlock. Ige looking for his own takedown. Two minutes to go.

Hammerfists from Evloev. Continuing to swat the stuck Ige. On top in guard now with a minute to go. Ige tries a triangle, no dice, eats shots from turtle. Both hooks in once again. Ige scrambles to his feet and eats a right hand for his trouble. Another double-leg by Evloev into half guard. Landing shots until the bell. 10-9 Evloev.

Final result: Evloev def. Ige via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27 x2)


145 lbs.: Lucas Almeida vs. Michael Trizano

Round 1: Almeida jabs the body. Low kick. Trizano advances, pulls back to avoid a counter. Quick 1-2 from Almeida a minute in. Trizano low kick, Almeida body kick. Slower start than I expected. Both fall short with punches. Two minutes in. Almeida digs a body shot and Trizano hauls him to the fence. Almeida grabs the Thai plum and separates. 1-2. Body shot to low kick. Two minutes to go.

Trizano puts him on the fence again. They separate. Almeida goes low-high. Trizano tries a combo, checks a low kick, eats an overhand right. One minute to go. Almeida looks for combos, Trizano tries a 1-2. Suddenly, Almeida jumps in and gets short-circuited by a counter hook. Trizano follows with a knee that sends him to the back and looks to pound. Almeida manages to get his wits back and survive. 10-9 Trizano.

Round 2: Trizano continuing to advance. Low kicks landing for Almeida. One minute in. Live shot to low kick. Heavy exchange. Body shots fall shot. Counter jab catches Almeida and they trade hooks two minutes in. Almeida starting to attack, answers a knee with a three-piece. Trizano looks to attack and a heavy left hook drops him hard. He manages to close up his guard. Two minutes to go.

Trizano scoots to the fence, can’t stand. Almeida standing over him, comes back down and opens a big cut on Trizano when their foreheads collide. Trizano gets to his knees as Almeida looks for the back with a minute to go. Almeida falls over the top and they stand. Ref pauses to look at the cut. They get the all-clear to continue and get back to trading. Nice check hook from Trizano, who eats a right hand while throwing a flying knee. 10-9 Almeida.

Round 3: Low kick exchanges to start the round. Trizano looks for a body shot, eats a harder one in return. Big exchange and a huge left hook sends Trizano teetering to the mat. Almeida follows him down and unloads punches and hammerfists into the ref intervenes.

Final result: Almeida def. Trizano via TKO (punches) at 0:55 of Round Three


125 lbs.: Poliana Botelho vs. Karine Silva

Round 1: They trade low kicks to start. Teep from Botelho. Left hook. Neither committing to anything big yet. One minute in. Both try front kicks. Botelho teep and body kick. Staying at kicking range. Two minutes in. Stiff jab by Botelho. Silva 1-2. Pretty much sparring so far. Silva low kicks. Botelho counters a 1-2. Two minutes to go.

Botelho leg kick, avoids a head kick. She tries a counter right. One minute to go. Silva suddenly blasts her with an overhand right and follows her down into top position. Looking for side control, got it. Botelho turns to her knees and gets caught in a d’arce. It’s enough to force a tap from Botelho with less than 10 seconds left in the round.

Final result: Silva def. Botelho via submission (d’arce choke) at 4:55 of round one


125 lbs.: Zarrukh Adashev vs. Ode Osbourne

Round 1: Low kick from Adashev. 2-1 falls short. Osbourne tries a front kick. Combo lands for Adashev. Adashev tries to push the advantage, but a check hook sends him crumpling to the mat. A few more punches and out go the lights.

Final result: Osbourne def. Adashev via KO (punches) at 1:01 of round one


205 lbs.: Alonzo Menifield vs. Askar Mozharov

Round 1: Menifield comes out slugging, then takes Mozharov down into half guard. Mozharov regains guard a minute in. Menifield heavy, not throwing a ton. Two minutes in. Short rights from Menifield. Back to half guard. Mozharov trying to punch off his back but not doing much else. Two minutes to go.

There’s a nice scramble from Mozharov, who starts slugging. Right hand from Menifield, then an easy double-leg. Full crucifix with a minute to go. Elbows landing, short punches. Brutal elbows and in comes the ref.

Final result: Menifield def. Mozharov via TKO (elbows) at 4:40 of round one


115 lbs.: Felice Herrig vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz

Round 1: Sharp 1-2 from Kowalkiewicz to start. Another quick combo. Right hand from Herrig, body shots. Kowalkiewicz counter right. More body work by Herrig a minute in. Kowalkiewicz doubles up the body kick and they exchange until she hits a brief takedown. Right from Herrig on the exit. Another exchange. Two minutes in. Herrig right cross. 2-3 falls short. Both land hard in center cage. Four-piece by Kowalkiewicz. Heavy lead right that may have injured her hand. 1-2 from Herrig in return. Kowalkiewicz fires knees inside. Two minutes to go.

Kowalkiewicz lands elbows on the break. Hard lead right, knees, elbow. She hauls Herrig to the fence. Solid knee with a minute to go. Elbow on the exit. Herrig shoots, can’t get her down, fires knees. 1-2, jab by Kowalkiewicz. 10-9 Kowalkiewicz.

Round 2: Trading punches early. Overhand right from Herrig, low kick. Nice left hook, eats a right cross in return and then lands a handful of her own. Hard Kowalkiewicz elbow a minute in. Stiff jab. Counter right. Exchanging at close range. Kowalkiewicz catches a kick, can’t use it, eats a right hand. Both women landing well to the head and body. Two minutes in. Herrig ducks a right hand to shoot, but ends up on her back. Kowalkiewicz lands a good elbow, then gets the RNC under the chin. Angle’s not great so she drops it to land elbows. Full back control with two minutes to go.

Solid punches from Kowalkiewicz, damage piling up and she wraps up the RNC in an instant, forcing the tap.

Final result: Kowalkiewicz def. Herrig via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:01 of round two


155 lbs.: Alex Da Silva vs. Joe Solecki

Round 1: Da Silva floors Solecki with a left hook in one of the first exchanges and follows him down into guard. One minute in. Solecki trying to work off of his back, stuck against the fence. Potentially considering a guillotine, loses it. Two minutes in. Overhook, no dice. Two minutes to go.

Ref wants more action from Da Silva. Solecki still trying to set things up, manages to wrap up a guillotine. Solid scrambling from Da Silva, who postures up for some punches after escaping. One minute to go. 10-9 Da Silva.

Round 2: Counter right from Solecki, who answers a low kick with a double-leg. Looking for the back, gets a hook a minute in. Hunting the RNC, full body triangle. Two minutes in. RNC looks like it’s getting closer. Da Silva warned for grabbing the fence with his toes and grabbing the glove. Two minutes to go.

Still chasing the RNC, landing short punches. One minute to go. Ref takes a point for the blatant fence and glove grabbing. 10-7 Solecki with the point deduction.

Round 3: Jab from Solecki, low kicks from Da Silva. 1-2, knee, left hook by Da Silva. Body jab. Counter right lands for Solecki. Lead right comes back at him. Solecki left hook and low kick. One minute in. Both hit the body. Brief clinch. Da Silva 1-2, then a lead right. Solecki shoots, pulls half guard. Da Silva lets him up. Hard exchange in center cage. Clean hook by Solecki, glancing 1-2 behind it. 2-3 stings Solecki with two minutes to go.

Solecki shoots and pulls guard. Solid elbow from Da Silva, who waves him up afterwards. Solecki looking spent, but both land hard rights with a minute to go. Da Silva lead right, Solecki left hook. Uppercut from the Brazilian and both land straight rights. Lefts from Solecki to follow up. Continuing to trade. Solid Solecki hooks. 10-9 Da Silva; it’s either a draw or a win for Solecki depending on whether the judges gave him a 10-8 or 10-7 in the second.

Final result: Solecki def. Silva via majority decision (28-28, 28-27, 29-27)


145 lbs.: Daniel Argueta vs. Damon Jackson

Round 1: Argueta grabs the fence to avoid an early takedown, but gets muscled down anyway. Jackson gets full back control a minute in. Argueta looking to punch over his shoulder. Two minutes in. Body triangle locked in. Looking for the RNC, can’t get it under the chin. Two minutes to go.

Jackson still looking for the choke, Argueta unable to dislodge him. One minute to go. Argueta sweeps into guard. Looking to take the back in return. 10-9 Jackson.

Round 2: Jackson counters a takedown with a knee to the head, then looks to take the back once again. Both hooks in against the fence. One mintue in. Body triangle now for Jackson. Two minutes in. Argueta still fighting the hands and trying to punch from his shoulder. Back to a single hook, then both as Jackson tries to flatten him out. Two minutes to go.

Heavy elbows from Jackson, who goes back to hunting the RNC. Argueta makes it to his feet as Jackson stays in backpack mode. Argueta spins free with a minute to go and tries to flurry in the way up before shooting. Elbow on the break and he completes a double-leg. 10-9 Jackson.

Round 3: Argueta marching forward, drops Jackson with a tight elbow and shoots. Both winging punches. Low kick trips Argueta up. Argueta looking to land elbows inside, stings him with an uppercut. Superman elbow, uppercut. One minute in. Brutal elbow as he presses Jackson against the fence. They separate. Jackson tries a head kick. Combos from Argueta, eats a combination in return. Two minutes in. Jackson tired but landing some solid shots as Argueta trucks forward. Rear waist lock for Argueta. Sneaky knee but it lets Jackson catch it and chase the switch. Slowly working his way into got position, got it. Half guard with two minutes to go.

Jackson staying heavy. One minute in. Coaches sniping at each other. Shoulder pressure from Jackson, tries to pass, can’t do so. Elbows from Jackson as Argueta sits up. Argueta with a knee at the bell. 10-9 Jackson.

Final result: Jackson def. Argueta via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)


170 lbs.: Benoit Saint Denis vs. Niklas Stolze

Round 1: Low kicks from Stolze, high kicks from Saint Denis. Stolze catches him coming in with a knee, but can’t fight off the takedown. Stuck on his butt against the fence. One minute in. Side control for Saint Denis. Two minutes in. Stolze manages to stand with a whizzer. then lands a knee to the jewels. They restart at range and Saint Denis takes him down into side control. Mount with two minutes to go.

Looking to take the back, does so. Full body triangle. One minute to go. Stolze fighting the hands. Short punches from Saint Denis. He wraps up the RNC in the final seconds, but runs out of time. 10-9 Saint Denis.

Round 2: They trade body kicks to start. Sharp counter right by Stolze, who wraps up a power guillotine but loses it and gets taken down. One minute in. Saint Denis moves to the back and there’s the tap.

Final result: Saint Denis def. Stolze via submission (rear naked choke) at 1:32 of Round Two


135 lbs.: Tony Gravely vs. Johnny Munoz

Round 1: Gravely tries a head kick, eats leg kicks. Gravely first a combination, then catches Munoz shooting with a tight right hand that crumples him. A few more punches and that’s that.

Final result: Gravely def. Munoz via KO (punches) at 1:08 of round one


125 lbs.: Jeff Molina vs. Zhalgas Zhumagulov

Round 1: Molina advancing, lands a looping right. Head kick attempt. Counter 1-2 by Zhumagulov. Molina tries a front kick a minute in. Zhumagulov fires a two-piece to the body and shoots. Knees to the thigh. Some fence grabs by Molina. Zhumagulov keeping a rear waist lock two minutes in. Now chest to chest. He briefly gets Molina to a knee. Molina trying to swat him with short punches. Two minutes to go.

Knees from Zhumagulov. Molina breaks his grip, eats a right hook on the exit. Zhumagulov tries to spin and they both throw hard rights. One minute to go. Molina looks for a head kick. Counter right to answer a body kick. Knee just misses, as do Zhumagulov’s counters. Zhumagulov punches into the clinch, denied via underhooks. Right hand and low kick on the break. 10-9 Zhumagulov.

Round 2: Good low kick from Molina. Counter right. Zhumagulov tries to blitz, lands a teep. Body shot after eating a low kick. He catches a kick, briefly gets Molina down, returns to the rear waist lock. Knees to the thigh, looking for the back a minute in. Molina showing good balance but still getting controlled. Two minutes in. Molina counters a takedown, looks for the back, tomahawk elbow on the break. They pause to cut some loose tape from Zhumagulov’s glove. Body kick from Molina. Two minutes to go.

Zhumagulov to the body as Molina fires combinations. Molina low kick. Head kick attempt. Zhumagulov tries a 3-2, shoots, denied, check hook. One minute to go and Zhumagulov wobbles him with a left hook. Molina tries a knee that just misses as Zhumagulov shoots. Still driving, completes it, avoids a guillotine. Molina scoots to the fence and stands. 10-9 Zhumagulov.

Round 3: Molina pressing forward, eats a low-high two-piece. Counter right to answer a leg kick a minute in. Zhumagulov whiffs on a spinning back fist. Combo lands for him. Molina tries a head kick. Body kick connects. Counter jab. Two minutes in. Zhumagulov lands a two-piece downstairs. Another left to the body. Molina answers with a right downstairs an a counter 3-2. Tit-for-tat exchanges. Good exchange with two minutes to go.

Molina landing jabs, avoids a counter overhand and a single-leg but eats a left hook. Zhumagulov body jab and low kicks. One minute to go. Back fist by Molina. Solid shot from Zhumagulov, lands punches as Molina looks for elbows. Knees to the thigh. Molina counters a last-second takedown. 10-9 Zhumagulov on the body shots?

Final result: Molina def. Zhumagulov via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27)


170 lbs.: Rinat Fakhretdinov vs. Andreas Michailidis

Round 1: Fakhretdinov pushes forward and hits his first takedown 14 seconds in. Michailidis stands, grabs the fence a few time, then gets tossed a couple more times. Two minutes in. Fakhretdinov looks for the back, can’t get it, stays attached. Knees from Fakhretdinov. Michailidis grabs the fence about six more times and the ref does nothing before they separate. Two minutes in. Low kick from Michailidis and they slug until Fakhredtinov ties up again. Trading short knees. Two minutes to go.

Solid defense from Michailidis, who slips throwing a wheel kick. Front headlock for Fakhretdinov. Nice move from Michailidis and they scramble. Looking for the RNC, slips off. Fakhretdinov has him against the fence again. Knees inside. Michailidis reverses. 10-9 Fakhretdinov.

Round 2: Quick double-leg from Fakhretdinov and this time he establishes. Working from guard. One minute in. Michailidis stuck in the corner, eats an elbow. Fakhretdinov staying heavy. Two minutes in. Michailidis really not doing much off of his back. Fakhretdinov looking for the back with two minutes to go.

Half guard now. More short ground-and-pound. One minute to go. Michailidis gets to his feet, and reverses. He tries a last-minute spinning back fist. 10-9 Fakhretdinov.

Round 3: Michailidis busy to start the round, manages to deny a shot. He tries to shoot himself, but has to bail to his back when Fakhretdinov threatens a front headlock. One minute in. Fakhretdinov chipping away from half guard. Two minutes in. There’s a nasty elbow, his heaviest of the fight. Back to full guard with two minutes to go.

Christ, that’s a big cut from that elbow. Quite a bit of blood. Fakhretdinov moves to side control, starts punching from turtle. One minute to go. Michailidis makes it to his feet, Fakhretdinov still attached. One more takedown for the road, then tries to bomb Michailidis out in the final seconds. Borderline 10-8, but I’ll stick with 10-9 Fakhretdinov since he wasn’t consistent with his attack.

Final result: Fakhretdinov def. Michailidis via unanimous decision (30-26 x2, 30-27)


125 lbs.: J.J. Aldrich vs. Erin Blanchfield

Round 1: Aldrich knocks Blanchfield off-balance, nearly lands a head kick on the way up. Potshots from Aldrich as she circles, good knee inside. Blanchfield runs in with a knee and briefly gets clinched. One minute in. Blanchfield body kick, Aldrich straight left. Similar sequence again. Aldrich counter jab. 3-2, just avoids a head kick and looks for a takedown. Blanchfield reverses and hauls her to the fence two minutes in. They separate. Aldrich 3-2 and counter jab. Blanchfield straight left, quick rights from Aldrich on the exit with two minutes to go.

Aldrich wraps up a body lock after eating a left hook and takes her down. Blanchfield scrambles up, blocking a head kick in the process. Aldrich’s jab working a treat so far. Catching Blanchfield coming in. Blanchfield shoots with a minute to go, can’t complete the single-leg. 1-2. Aldrich continuing to potshot, eats a glancing head kick and a cleaner body kick. 10-9 Aldrich.

Round 2: Blanchfield trying to stay aggressive as they trade. Jab exchange. More clean jabs by Aldrich a minute in. Blanchfield 2-1, Aldrich counter combo. Short right hook by Blanchfield prompts an Aldrich takedown. Again Blanchfield pops right back up against the fence. They separate two minutes in. Another stiff jab from Aldrich. Suddenly, she falls off-balance in an exchange and Blanchfield wraps up a standing high-elbow guillotine. The squeeze is vicious and there’s the tap.

Final result: Blanchfield def. Aldrich via submission (standing guillotine choke) at 2:38 of round two
