Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) makes its triumphant return to Pechanga Arena for the UFC San Diego mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Aug. 13, 2022) LIVE on both ESPN and ESPN+ in — you guessed it — San Diego, Calif., featuring an important bantamweight showdown between streaking 135-pound contender Marlon Vera and former division champion Dominick Cruz. Before that five-round headliner gets underway this weekend in “The Golden State,” featherweight phenom David “Silent Assassin” Onama will test himself against the rough-and-tumble stylings of 145-pound “Train” Nate Landwehr.

Round 1: Cruz looking aggressive early. Nice flurry that started with a right cross. Body kick. One minute in. Nice leg kick. Front kick from Vera, who gets spun to the mat and eats leg kicks on the way up. Cruz fires a naked low kick and gets dropped by a left hook, but scrambles up into a takedown attempt and separates. Big flurry lands for him two minutes in. Body shot. He tries to chase Vera down again. Faked level change. Flurry to answer a front kick attempt. Two minutes to go.

Vera backs away from another flurry. Snap kick to the body. Big flurry by Cruz. Vera misses on a 1-1-2, eats another rush with a minute to go. Slick knee tap by Cruz into guard. Near-miss on a Vera triangle. 10-9 Cruz.

Round 2: Another flurry and low kick by Cruz. He’s running circles around Vera so far. Low kick to right cross. Low kick to flurry a minute in. Head kick attempts. Nice front kick to the head by Vera kicks off an exchange. Good body shot from Cruz. Two minutes in. Sneaky right cross. Body shot. Low kick, flurry. Vera tries a front kick. Cruz low kick with two minutes to go.

Vera just has no answers for Cruz’s movement so far. Low-high 2-3 from Cruz. There’s a right from Vera as they exchange. Cruz overhand left with a minute to go. Heavy right cross. Another on the lead. He shoots, denied, lands a right hand. They trade lefts, Vera misses on a head kick. 10-9 Cruz.

Round 3: Cruz basically throwing with impunity at this point. Low kicks, combinations, everything working. Vera falls short on a hook kick. Off-balance two-piece by Cruz a minute in. There’s a 1-1-2 from Vera that drops Cruz again, and again Cruz immediately pops up and fires flurries. Two minutes in. Two-piece by Cruz. Vera straight left, gets tripped up by a leg kick and eats a combo. Two minutes to go.

Cruz shoots, denied, trades heat. Vera tries a Superman punch. Hard four-piece by Cruz. Side kick from Vera. Looping left lands for Cruz with a minute to go. Nice right hand, backing Vera up. Looping lefts. He shoots, eats a pair of hard elbows. Spinning elbow attempt on the break. Even with the knockdown, 10-9 Cruz.

Round 4: Early shot from Cruz, denied. Counter right knocks Vera off-balance. Low-high right hands. One minute in. Counter jab catches Cruz coming in for a third knockdown and again Cruz pops up like nothing happened. Overhand right by Cruz. Low kicks and jabs from Vera. Good 1-2 by Cruz two minutes in. Vera feints with his hands, and as Cruz backs out of the pocket, “Chito” meets him with a missile of a head kick. Cruz is barely clinging to consciousness when he hits the mat, and a few more coffin nails put an end to that.

Final result: Vera def. Cruz by KO (head kick and punches)


145 lbs.: Nate Landwehr vs. David Onama

Round 1: Quick jabs by Onama. Landwehr looking for leg kicks. One minute in. Neither man committing to their punches yet. Body kick by Onama, then a clean lead right. Good flurry by Landwehr met by another stiff jab. Heavy counter three-piece lands for Onama. More Landwehr low kicks two minutes in. Onama just misses on an overhand right, lands a cross that seems to bother Landwehr’s eye. Onama answers a naked low kick with a counter right, considers a front headlock as Landwehr stands. Combo by Landwehr. Ona suddenly unleashes an overhand right that appears to knock Landwehr clean out, but “The Train” gets his wits back on impact with the mat. Onama all over him with two minutes to go.

Great scrambles. Onama takes back mount, only for Landwehr to turn into guard and start chipping away. Onama scrambles up with a minute to go, puts together a nice flurry. Elbows from Landwehr, who fights off a takedown. Lead rights. Stiff Onama jab. Good late work in the clinch from Landwehr, including a knee right after the bell. 10-9 Onama.

Round 2: Nice right hands from Landwehr piling up. He’s landing with volume. Onama grabs a body lock, gets reversed. Knees from Landwehr. Landwehr drags him to his knees a minute in. Knees from the front headlock. Nice knees and he looks for an anaconda choke before fighting off a takedown and taking top position. Looking for the back two minutes in. Onama turns into top position and gets to his feet but Landwehr is relentless. Continuing to pile up shots on the exhausted Onama. Onama looks for a takedown but he’s too tired to finish it. Another anaconda attempt from Landwehr, can’t get it, settles in guard. Two minutes to go.

Full mount, hard shots. Landwehr goes to the back, tries a Hermansson-style guillotine transition. Onama makes it up, eats more bombs, dragged back down. Full back mount once again. Landwehr postures up and bombs away. Full mount in the last 10 seconds. 10-8 Landwehr.

Round 3: Landwehr full of energy, Onama dead on his feet. Lead right by Landwehr. There’s a big flurry by Onama. As he stumbles, Landwhr cracks him. Onama so wobbly on his feet, constantly getting punished. Filed takedown attempt and Landwehr just walks off, pumping up the crowd and letting Onama stand. Hard clinch knees. Elbow sends Onama to a knee. Landwehr lets him up again. There’s a huge 1-2 from Onama and he’s swinging for the fences. Landwehr weathers it and goes back to brutalizing him. Heavy knees, straight right. Onama trying to posture with him. Two minutes to go.

Counter right by Onama. Landwehr puts him on the fence, easily denies a takedown. Head kick on the exit. There’s a heavy 1-2 by Onama. Another desperate blitz and he falls to his back. Side control for Landwehr with a minute to go. He lets Onama up. Onama suddenly swarms and sends Landwehr to the mat, but he just can’t polish him off, and Mike Beltran nearly gets caught up in the final firefight. 10-9 Landwehr.

Final result: Landwehr def. Onama by majority decision


115 lbs.: Yazmin Jauregui vs. Iasmin Lucindo

Round 1: Quick exchange, neither connects. Now they land in center cage. Lucindo tries a flying front kick. One minute in. Jauregui low kick. Body kick attempt. Long hook lands for Lucindo. Brief clinch. Sharp combo by Jauregui, but Lucindo blasts her with a left hook to back her off. Two minutes in. Hard low kick by Lucindo. Jauregui lands her own. Lucindo front kick, swings big to answer a low kick. Two minutes to go.

Both swing big. Lucindo overhand right. Simultaneous kicks, unsuccessful spin. Jauregui catches her with a left hook as she swings, follows with a low kick. Check hook with a minute to go. Head kick to back fist attempt. Both swing hard. Iasmin hauls her to the fence, gets reversed against eating an elbow, reverses in turn. They trade knees, spinning back kick on the break by Lucindo. 10-9 Jauregui.

Round 2: Trading low kicks to start. Lucindo answers a body kick with a left hook. Heavy 2-3 by Jauregui. Low kick a minute in. Lucindo throwing naked kicks, eats a big left hook in an exchange, hunts for trips. Elbow by Jauregui as she’s taken to the fence. She reverses two minutes in and separates. Front kick downstairs. Lucindo tries to spin. Two minutes to go.

Heavy exchanges, both connecting. Lucindo body kick. Jauregui follows a spinning back kick attempt with a back fist. Lucindo low kick with a minute to go. Close-range exchange. Jauregui slips throwing a flying knee. Good exchange, brief body lock by Jauregui. Counter right by Lucindo to answer a low kick and they trade bombs in the waning seconds. 10-9 Jauregui.

Round 3: Quick hug to start the round. Low kick to right cross for Jauregui. Back to the usual exchanges. One minute in. Lucindo goes jumping front kick to spinning back kick. Switch kick attempt, hard left hook as they trade. Exchange in the center capped by a Lucindo low kick two minutes in. Left hook and 1-2 lands for Jauregui inside. Heavy right cross that Lucindo shrugs off. Lucindo catches her with a right on the exit. Two minutes to go.

Lucindo counter right, Jauregui left hook. Heavy exchanges. Jauregui getting the better of these. One minute to go. Jauregui low kick. Wheel kick attempt, Lucindo tries her own spinning back kick. 1-2 by Jauregui. Exchange at the 10-second mark. 10-9 Jauregui.

205 lbs.: Devin Clark vs. Azamat Murzakanov

Round 1: Tentative start. Low kick from Clark. 1-2 falls short a minute in. Still no clean connections. There’s a good left from Murzakanov as I type that, forcing Clark to reset. Solid overhand left by Murzakanov. Two minutes in. Clark whiffs on a big left hook. Murzakanov keeping Clark near the fence, not pulling the trigger. Glancing straight left. Quick lead left with two minutes to go.

Clark steps in and eats a counter left, comes back with a swatting right. Good low kick. One minute to go. Slick head kick from Clark prompts Murzakanov to tie up. Looking for a trip, can’t get it. Knees to the body. 10-9 Murzakanov.

Round 2: Quick 1-2 by Clark. Murzakanov tries his own, avoids a side kick. There’s a big 1-2 from Murzakanov, who ties up and digs a body shot from the exit. More body work. One minute in. Nice counter left and body shot to answer a naked low kick. Body shot to body lock. Clark looking for a kimura grip, drops it. Two minutes in. Knees to the thigh from Murzakanov. As they separate, Murzakanov wobbles Clark with a heavy 1-2, then pursues to end up on top in half guard. Body shots from the top. Two minutes to go.

Short elbows to the head as well. Hard knee to the body as he lets Clark up. One minute to go. Clark tries to spin. Murzakanov to the body. Clark takes him to the fence. 10-9 Murzakanov.

Round 3: Low kicks from Clark. Murzakanov swinging some heavy punches, lands a left to the body. Clark tossing out side kicks as well. Murzakanov follows a double jab with a nasty body shot that sends Clark to the mat, then pours on the hurt for the TKO finish.

Final result: Murzakanov def. Clark by TKO (punches)


125 lbs.: Ariane Lipski vs. Priscila Cachoeira

Round 1: Both swing big right hands. Looking for leg kicks. Cachoeira clips her with a left hook in an exchange and pours on the combinations until Lipski hits the deck. Cachoeira swarms all over her with hammerfists until the ref comes in.

Final result: Cachoeira def. Lipski by TKO (punches)


185 lbs.: Gerald Meerschaert vs. Bruno Silva

Round 1: Low kick from Meerschaert to start. Silva tries a body kick, eats one in return. Another body kick, tries to swing some haymakers. One minute in. Both land leg kicks. Meerschaert avoids some big swings. Body kick two minutes in. Tentative fight so far, Silva missing on his bigger shots. Now some nice exchanges. Two minutes to go.

Easy takedown for Meerschaert into guard. Staying tight, keeping on the pressure. One minute to go. More of the same, short shots from Meerschaert. Now he postures up for some bigger shots late, then clamps down when Silva tries to turn into him. 10-9 Meerschaert.

Round 2: Low kick from Silva. Continuing to stalk forward. Meerschaert fires a front kick and Silva sprints after him, only to get tied up. They separate a minute in. Nice body kicks by Meerschaert. Silva missing big on the haymakers. Meerschaert low kick, tries to grab a front choke on Silva’s next whiff. Two minutes in. There’s a nice counter right by Silva. Meerschaert shoots, denied. Body kick. Silva still overthrowing and hitting air. Two minutes to go.

Nice head kick by Meerschaert. Crosses and jabs. Body kick, avoids a head kick. Silva catches him in an exchange, can’t chase him down. One minute to go. Low kick from Meerschaert. Silva throws so hard he falls over. 10-9 Meerschaert.

Round 3: Meerschaert tries a head kick, shoots, denied. Low kick exchange. Potshots from Meerschaert, nice combo and level change when Silva runs after him a minute in. Two-piece. Out of nowhere, Meerschaert absolutely crumples Silva with an overhand left. “Blindado” is somehow still conscious, but Meerschaert renders that moot by locking up an airtight palm-to-palm guillotine to force the tap.

115 lbs.: Loopy Godinez vs. Angela Hill

Round 1: Quick left hook lands for Godinez, then a lead right that rattles Hill. Godinez tries to follow up and they briefly tussle in the clinch. Another lead right by Godinez a minute in. Really nice exchanges, both throwing crisp combinations. 3-2 lands for Godinez inside. Two minutes in. 1-2. Two-piece on the break. Another clean lead right. Nice overhand by Hill inside. Hill threatens a shot, lands a cross, tries a head kick. Jab from Godinez, overhand from Hill. Two minutes to go.

Lots of feints at the moment. Solid cross by Hill, eats a lead right and left hook in return. Heavy exchange inside. Jumping knee to the body by Hill. One minute to go. Hill ducks a right hand and shoots. Godinez gets double unders and exits with a knee. Hill tries a head kick. Hill lands a perfect flying knee that Godinez somehow absorbs to tie up. Round 2: Right back to trading punches. Jab exchange. Both sling hard right hands inside. Godinez bullies her down with a shot, but Hill uses the threat of a guillotine to stand a minute in. Godinez’s nose is not in good shape. Hill shoots, denied. Hill getting some momentum. Two minutes in. Nice right cross, eats an uppercut in return. Quick exchange inside. Combo by Hill. Continuing to exchange at close range. Hill shoots, denied, eats a left on the break. Two minutes to go.

125 lbs.: Cynthia Calvillo vs. Nina Nunes

Round 1: Trading low kicks to start. One minute in. 1-2 by Calvillo. Nobody committing to anything so far. She catches a kick for a takedown, lands a chopping right on the way up. Two minutes in. Nunes starting to do some damage with the low kicks. Two minutes to go.

Another Nunes low kick. Basically a sparring session so far, favoring Nunes. Calvillo catches a kick, can’t get the takedown. One minute to go. Jab by Nunes. Spinning back kick attempt. 2-1 by Calvillo. 10-9 Nunes.

Round 2: Calvillo looks for the body, eats a leg kick. Nunes double jab. Low kick a minute in. Nunes tries a body shot, denies a level change. 2-1 by Calvillo. She catches a kick, can’t use it. Two minutes in. 2-1 met by a lead right from Nunes. Counter right. She fires a naked low kick and ends up on her back in guard. Two minutes to go.

Nunes tries to turn for an armbar, no dice. Calvillo staying tight, landing short punches. One minute to go. Nunes fires upkicks and manages to stand. Low kick. She shoots, denied. Man, I don’t like to reward basic control, but so little happened on the feet that I have to go 10-9 Calvillo.

Round 3: Trading kicks to start. Nunes tries to spin, then tries a hook kick. Counter right by Calvillo. Nice low kick by Nunes a minute in. Calvillo lead right. Nunes tries to catch a low kick, can’t do so, leans into a left hook. Body work by Nunes. Slick combo. Two minutes in. Low kick. Calvillo times a double-leg well, Nunes scrambles up against the fence. Knee from Calvillo on the break. 1-2 downstairs. Two minutes to go.

Nunes tries a flurry. Low kick connects. Uppercut just misses. Heavy low kick and she avoids a takedown. 1-2 by Calvillo with a minute to go. Superman punch to head kick from Nunes. Counter right, head kick, jab. Good late work form Nunes and they slug. 10-9 Nunes.

155 lbs.: Gabriel Benitez vs. Charlie Ontiveros

Round 1: Ontiveros looks to kick, lands an axe kick of all things before Benitez hauls him to the fence. Ontiveros separates. Benitez low kick, Ontiveros counter right a minute in. Ontiveros tries a head kick. Right hand exchange, another attempted axe kick by Ontiveros. Clean leg kick. Lead left by Benitez. Counter left. Low kick, left cross. Ontiveros tries to come back with a wheel kick two minutes in. Benitez to the body, avoids a hook kick and ties up. Elbows in the clinch open Ontiveros up, after which he eats a low blow. When they resume, Benitez blasts him with a 1-2 before slamming him to the mat. Half guard with two minutes to go.

Full mount for Benitez, dropping heavy shots. He postures up and blasts away with punches to send the ref into action.

Final result: Benitez def. Ontiveros by TKO (punches)


125 lbs.: Tyson Nam vs. Ode Osbourne

Round 1: Body kicks from Osbourne to start. Right hook, then some sharp counters. Continuing to target the body, eats a leg kick a minute in. Long string of jabs from Nam, eats another body kick. Nam body shot and low kick. Sharp counter right. Two minutes in. Lead left from Osbourne, avoids an overhand. Another lead left. Osbourne tries a flying knee and Nam is ready, smashing him with a vicious overhand right. A few more and out go the lights.

Final result: Nam def. Osbourne by KO (punches)


190 lbs.: Josh Quinlan vs. Jason Witt

Round 1: Quinlan falling short with low kicks. Solid right cross. Low kick connects. He falls short with more strikes, as does Witt a minute in. Quinlan leg kick. Witt shoots under a right hand for a takedown against the fence. Quinlan works his way up and separates. Two minutes in. Witt throws a naked kick and runs headlong into one of the gnarliest left hooks you’ll ever see. “The Vanilla Gorilla” is on a higher plane of existence by the time he hits the ground, and the ref thankfully steps in before Quinlan can follow up.

Final result: Quinlan def. Witt by KO (punch)


135 lbs.: Da’Mon Blackshear vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1: PFL ran long, so we’ll start the PbP in round two.

Round 2: Blackshear backs Zalal to the fence early and drages him to the mat, looking for the back. It’s Zalal who scrambles free and gets back control, though, and he’s hunting a neck crank. Full body triangle. Blackshear sweeps into guard two minutes in, then moves to side control. There’s that rear crucifix he loves. Zalal free and turns it into his own takedown attempt. Blackshear looks to drop elbows. Two minutes to go.

Blackshear reverses on the fence and looks for a single-leg. Slick move to the back, playing backpack with a minute to go. Working it under the chin, has it on the chin. Zalal toughs it out, then survives a second effort. 10-9 Blackshear.

Zalal looks for a head kick, lands a jab, eats a leg kick. Trading low kicks, Zalal follows with a body shot. Throwing heat on the fence. Blackshear tries to shoot, eats a knee. Zalal really pressuring two minutes in. Blackshear low kicks, Zalal right hands. Blackshear ducks in for a single-leg, can’t get it, tries to spin. Zalal opening up on the fence, eats a 3-2. Two minutes to go.

Trading low kicks. Blackshear tries to tie up, eats an elbow. Blackshear finding his counters but Zalal’s outworking him. Nasty body shots by Zalal. Another clean hook downstairs. Knee just misses. Tomahawk elbow, then a body kick that drops Blackshear. Blackshear tries to shoot, then closes his guard. Zalal pouring on punches and elbows, but Blackshear makes it to the bell. 10-8 Zalal.
