Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is bringing mixed martial arts (MMA) fans a special championship doubleheader with the UFC 284 pay-per-view (PPV) event, headlined by the “Champion vs. Champion” lightweight super fight between current 155-pound kingpin Islam Makhachev and reigning featherweight titleholder Alex Volkanovski. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway “Down Under,” top 145-pound contenders Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett collide for the interim division title. The winner is expected to face Volkanovski to unify the straps at some point later this year. Hometown heroes Justin Tafa (heavyweight) and Jack Della Maddalena (welterweight) will also see main card PPV action.

UFC 284’s five-fight PPV main card is set to pop off TONIGHT (Sat., Feb. 11, 2023) at 10 p.m. ET (early Sunday morning local time) from inside RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, and we’re going to bring you LIVE results and real-time play-by-play updates below, starting with the light heavyweight collision between Jimmy Crute and Alonzo Menifield. 155 lbs.: UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev vs. UFC Featherweight Champion Alex Volkanovski

Round 1: Volkanovski circling early, flicking out his jab. Makhachev staying out of reach, tries a body kick. Volkanovski tries a low-high combo a minute in. Makhachev body kick. Lots of feints for Volkanovski, who settles for a leg kick. Good left hook and shift 1-2 knocks Makhachev back. Two minutes in. Volkanovski starting to march forward more aggressively. Straight left from Makhachev. Body kick. Volkanovski steps into attack and gets buzzed by a left hand. Makhachev follows with a head kick and hauls him to the fence. Two minutes to go.

Makhachev holding onto the body lock against the fence. There’s the takedown, good scrambling to keep Volkanovski from landing on top. Both hooks in for Makhachev with a minute to work. Makhachev looking for the RNC, considers a neck crank. Volkanovski motions to the crowd that he’s alright. 10-9 Makhachev.

Round 2: Volkanovski trying to stay on the front foot. Quick blitz after avoiding a combo. Makhachev body kick, avoids a flurry. One minute in. Another blitz from Volkanovski and this one appears to hurt Makhachev, who responds with a double-leg. Once again looking for the back. Volkanovski makes it to his feet. Makhachev again gets him down, but Volkanovski lands on top and fires a knee as they stand. Makhachev ties up again two minutes in, gets reversed on the fence. Short lefts from Volkanovski. They separate. Both men sitting outside punching range. Volkanovski with an unsuccessful rush. Two minutes to go.

Two-piece to low kick from Volkanovski, who gets rattled by a straight left. Makhachev follows with a knee and looks to attack on the fence. Body shot to low kick from Volkanovski. Double left comes back at him. Low kick and body shot with a minute to go. Makhachev catches him leaning with an uppercut and they tie up. Makhachev throwing knees, Volkanovski throwing punches. 10-9 Makhachev.

Round 3: Nice head kick from Makhachev. Sharp right hook lands for Volkanovski. Makhachev lands a jab, eats a body shot, and looks for the clinch a minute in. Heavy body kick, then a long left that Volkanovski answers with a low kick and body shot. Sneaky leg kick by Volkanovski two minutes in. Makhachev ties up, fires knees, then hits a trip. Volkanovski fighting hard to get free, but gets stuck on one knee against the fence. Impressive work to stand and press Makhachev against the side of the cage.

Big punches by Volkanovski on the exit. Counter left by Makhachev draws a nod of approval. One minute to go. Low kick by Volkanovski. Makhachev’s really looking for counters. Volkanovski pushing forward and Makhachev slips as the former opens up. Volkanovski tries to muscle him down, can’t do so. 10-9 Volkanovski.

Round 4: Low kick from Volkanovski to start. 1-2 lands for Makhachev, who avoids some big swings. There’s a tight hook by Volkanovski. Makhachev eats a low blow, doesn’t elect to take time. One minute in. Nice left by Makhachev. Counter right. Perfectly timed double-leg puts Makhachev on top. Volkanovski tries to crawl to the fence and Makhachev jumps on his back, immediately locking up the body triangle. Two minutes in. Makhachev maintaining control as Volkanovski tries to punch over his shoulder. Two minutes to go.

Volkanovski continuing to fight the hands and punch over his shoulder. One minute to go. Makhachev content to just hold onto the position as Volkanovski talks trash and swats him with whatever punches he can. 10-9 Makhachev.

Round 5: Quick hug to start the final round. Counter left from Makhachev to answer a low kick. Volkanovski blitzes, lands a leg kick. Counter knee and left hand from Makhachev back him off. One minute in. Awkward collision. Hard knees by Makhachev as Volkanovski throws punches point blank. Volkanovski commits to an attack, gets taken down, and pops back to his feet before separating. Two minutes in. Left hook by Volkanovski, who continues to attack despite Makhachev’s counters. Makhachev fires a reactive single-leg and Volkanovski tries to hit the switch. Excellent hips to get his leg free and separate. Two minutes to go.

Volkanovski lands a jab, then grabs the body lock. He goes for a takedown, can’t get it, lands a hard left hook. Outside trip, denied by the whizzer. They separate. Makhachev looks like he’s feeling the pace. Straight right catches Makhachev changing levels and he’s forced to pull guard with a minute to go. Volkanovski landing hard right hands. Makhachev holding tight, keeping Volkanovski from posturing up. Now Volkanovski gets free to drop bombs. What a fight. 10-9 Volkanovski.

Final result: Makhachev def. Volkanovski by unanimous decision – WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!


145 lbs.: Yair Rodriguez vs. Josh Emmett for interim featherweight title

Round 1: Rodriguez staying mobile and switching stance. Quick front kicks. Hard low kick spins Emmett around. One minute in,. He fires a head kick, then follows with a body kick to the same side and some hard punches. Front kick attempt to Brazilian kick attempt. Quick leg kick. Emmett really struggling to get inside, eats a body kick and double right hands. Two minutes in. Another hard body kick from Rodriguez and Emmett tries to answer with haymakers. Another flurry from Emmett falls short and he eats another body kick. Both fire punches, neither connects. Two minutes to go.

Rodriguez whiffs a wheel kick and comes back with a two-piece. Emmett whiffs big on a right hand, but when Rodriguez attacks, Emmett catches him coming in with another right that freezes him in place. Emmett charges him down until Rodriguez hits the mat, then starts dropping hard shots. Doing a good job of staying out of Rodriguez’s guard with a minute to go. Nasty elbows. He postures up and lands a hard right hand. Big elbows from Rodriguez off of his back. 10-9 Emmett on damage.

Round 2: Rodriguez steps into trade and eats a heavy left hand that backs him off. He comes back with some spiteful body kicks, avoiding a takedown. Knee to right hook to body kicks. Emmett catches one and puts him on the fence a minute in. Knee from Rodriguez on the exit, avoiding a spinning elbow. Rodriguez tries to go body-head with kicks. Big whiff from Emmett and Rodriguez answers with a sneaky elbow that wobbles him. Two minutes in. Emmett really trying to answer with the right hand but Rodriguez has taken control of the distance. Emmett blitzes, can’t track him down. Solid lead right. Two minutes to go.

Rodriguez tries a head kick, then lands a clean flying knee that Emmett somehow absorbs to take him down into guard. Rodriguez again firing elbows off of his back. Left hand from Emmett. Rodriguez responds with an armbar attempt with a minute to go, then switches to the triangle to force the tap.

Final result: Rodriguez def. Emmett by submission (triangle choke)


170 lbs.: Jack Della Maddalena vs. Randy Brown

Round 1: Brown takes the center, flashing the jab. He’s moving well in the early going. They trade low kicks. Brown tries a slap. One minute in. Low kick from Della Maddalena. Brown warned for outstretched fingers. Front kick downstairs. Brown controlling range well. As I say that, Della Maddalena backs him to the fence and knocks him silly with a right hook. Della Maddalena pours on the hurt, then locks up the RNC to force a tap.

Final result: Della Maddalena def. Brown by submission (rear naked choke)


265 lbs.: Justin Tafa vs. Parker Porter

Round 1: Overhand right lands for Porter. 3-2. Tafa tries a front kick, follows with a straight left. Combo by Porter. He tries a front kick, eats shots from the single collar tie. One minute in. Porter tries to force his way inside and runs face-first into a perfect counter left that shuts the lights out instantly. He’s gone before the follow-up uppercut connects, and it’s a walk-off knockout for Justin Tafa.

Final result: Tafa def. Porter by KO (punch)


205 lbs.: Jimmy Crute vs. Alonzo Menifield

Round 1: Some quick exchanges to start, which end when Crute changes levels and drags Menifield to the mat. Menifield stuck on one knee a minute in. He pops up, nice work by Crute to slam him back down. Looking for the arm triangle, loses it, settles for half guard. Menifield scrambles up and Crute changes levels again, taking him down and avoiding a guillotine. Back up, inside trip to land in guard. Now half guard. Menifield looks to pop up and Crute snatches up a guillotine. Great scramble and it’s back to the feet. Two minutes to go.

They’re trading bombs and it’s Crute who gets the worst of it. He falls off-balance and Menifield follows him down, attempting a 10-finger guillotine. Back to turtle, dropping punches with a minute to go. Hammerfists from Menifield. Crute works his way to his feet. Huge elbow from Menifield, then two monster right hands that appear to knock Crute out. Crute somehow wakes up in time to shoot a takedown and survive the round. 10-9 Menifield.

Round 2: They trade jabs to start. Both looking for left hooks. Another 1-2 from Menifield and down goes Crute again. He shoots, gets sprawled on. Menifield takes top turtle again and lands punches as Crute crawls to the fence. Menifield looks for the RNC, nearly falls over the top. One minute in. Crute gets to his feet, eats another huge elbow. Another. They separate. Check hook by Menifield, then a stiff jab. More jabs, 1-2. Huge left hand. Crute’s just about done but he’s still going for it. Crute shoots, denied. Huge knee by Crute, but he walks into a big southpaw left. Crute wobbling back and Menifield batters him to the fence before tying up. Jockeying for position. Two minutes to go.

Crute reverses position and bullies Menifield to the mat. Looking to take the back. One minute to go. Crute dropping punches, looking for the RNC. Menifield tries to turn and Crute appears to get the choke, but Menifield gives a thumbs-up. 10-9 Menifield.

Round 3: Early right hands from Menifield. Stiff jabs. Crute has the more pep in his step of the two. Lead right. He fires a left hook and shoots. He can’t get the first one, and on the re-shoot, Menifield grabs the fence, earning himself a point deduction. Crute digging hard for the takedown. Nice single-leg finish into mount. Back to half guard, can’t find the arm triangle. Crute steps into mount once again, then back to half guard with two minutes to go.

Side control now, considers a kimura. Menifield spins to his knees. One minute to go. Crute puts in a hook, chipping away with short punches. Menifield makes it to his feet and locks his hands before the bell. 10-8 Crute with the point deduction

Final result: Majority draw
