Undisputed Super Middleweight kingpin Saul “Canelo” Alvarez makes his long-awaited return to a Mexican ring tonight (Sat., May 6, 2022) when he takes on challenger, John Ryder, in his native Guadalajara.

MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE coverage of the Canelo vs. Ryder main event below. The pay-per-view (PPV) main card broadcast kicks off on DAZN at 7 p.m. ET (watch it here), while Canelo and Ryder are expected to make their ring walks around 11 p.m. ET.

This marks Canelo’s second defense as undisputed champ, having completed the collection with 2021’s knockout of Caleb Plant and subsequently turned aside rival, Gennadiy Golovkin, in their third meeting. Ryder, meanwhile, claimed WBO’s interim title and a mandatory title shot with a Nov. 2022 injury stoppage of then-unbeaten Zach Parker.

Other PPV action sees Julio Cesar Martinez defend his WBC Flyweight belt against Ronal Batista, Stevie Spark look to continue his rise against dangerous spoiler Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela, and Oleksandr Gvozdyk take on the battle-tested Ricards Bolotniks.

Undisputed Super Middleweight Championship: Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder

Round one: Tentative start as they meet in center ring and keep their distance. Ryder tries a flurry, eats a body shot. Another nice body shot from Canelo. Quick flurry from Ryder. He bullies Canelo to the ropes and looks to sneak punches around the guard halfway through. Another left to the body by Canelo, clinch. 1-1-2 on the ropes. Ryder tries to get inside, eats a right to the body. Canelo digs another body hook and gets clinched. Round ends with a staring contest. 10-9 Alvarez.

Round two: Canelo prodding with his jab. 1-1-2 in the corner, body shots afterwards. Canelo in full control of the mid range. Nice right hand on the ropes. Halfway through. Ryder sending out the occasional potshot, but mostly hitting gloves. Canelo lands a right to the body, eats two short uppercuts through the guard. Good body sequence by Ryder, eats a left hook to the midsection afterwards. Ryder has a bit of success when he can get shoulder-to-shoulder. Canelo tries an uppercut, lands a body shot in the waning seconds. 10-9, 20-18 Alvarez.

Round three: Ryder fires a flurry inside and both connect on the ropes. Sharp straight right from Canelo, who buries a right hand in Ryder’s midsection. Both attack the body; things are picking up a bit. More pressure from Canelo. He lands a 1-1-2 on the ropes, Ryder punches his way out and puts together a flurry. Heavy fire from Canelo halfway through. Ryder still game but already wearing some damage. Low-high three-piece, clinch. Uppercuts through the guard. Body shot. Ryder having a really nice stretch, lands around the guard again. Canelo fires some clubbing right hands against the ropes. 10-9 Ryder, 29-28 Alvarez.

Round four: Double left hook from Canelo, continuing to pressure. Ryder body shot strays low. More short shots by Ryder. Canelo 1-2. Ryder with some more phone both work, eats a body shot in return. Both land their power hands. Ryder really wearing the damage. Jabs from Canelo, right cross behind them halfway through. Heavy two-piece. Nice bit of momentum from Canelo, stalking behind the jab. Ryder doubles up to the body, eats a straight right. Both land hooks downstairs, Canelo’s heavier. Heavy cross to the head. Looks like a serious power discrepancy; Ryder’s landing but everything Canelo lands looks way more damaging. 10-9, 39-37 Alvarez.

Round five: Good 1-2 from Canelo. Ryder with some swarming shots. 1-2 through the guard, Canelo body shots in return. Short Canelo left hook. He’s still winning the jab battle. Solid body shots. He backs Ryder to the ropes, does a bit of work, then blasts Ryder as they return to the center with a clean 1-2 that slowly sends “The Gorilla” to the canvas halfway through. Ryder beats the count and comes back swinging, landing some decent shots that can’t slow Canelo down. Good uppercuts from Ryder. Canelo continuing to pressure. 10-8, 49-45 Alvarez.

Round six: Canelo taking his time instead of jumping on Ryder. Solid body shot. Ryder still trying to get in his licks from point blank. Again, he’s landing, but he can’t put a dent in Canelo and is getting chewed up at mid range. Solid flurries from Ryder, clinch. Clubbing overhand from Canelo sends Ryder reeling, though he manages to tie up. Trading inside halfway through. Potshotting one another in center ring. Straight left to uppercut by Ryder. Straight rights by Canelo, then a body shot. Both men jabbing, Canelo still getting the better. Ryder actually having a solid round, but CAnelo’s still doing a lot more damage. 10-9, 59-54 Alvarez.

Round seven: More steady, effective work from Canelo. Ryder doing what he can, putting together combinations in close. High-low right hands from Canelo, short combo from Ryder into the clinch. Good sequence from Ryder, who gets stung by a right hand halfway through. More right hands from Canelo. Ryder answers with jabs through the guard. Ryder’s nose is absolutely gushing blood. Straight left, followed by uppercuts. Canelo answers with jabs and a stiff right hand. Overhand on the ropes, clinch. 10-9, 69-63 Alvarez.

Round eight: Another good body shot from Canelo, who backs Ryder to the corner and tries to club him with right hands. Clinch. Low-high 3-2 from Canelo. Ryder trying to chisel away in the clinch. Heavy lead rights by Canelo. Halfway though. Canelo sharpshooting, tearing Ryder up at range. Ryder getting in the occasional lick in close. Ryder body shot, jab exchange. Nice little sequence from Ryder, who eats a 1-1-2 and hits the deck immediately after. It’s ruled a slip. 10-9, 79-72 Alvarez.

Round nine: Technical difficulties means we start a minute in with Canelo landing a hard body shot. Trading in center ring. Canelo continuing to control the range halfway through. Clinch. More right hands landing for Canelo and Ryder’s legs might finally be giving out. “The Gorilla” throwing back but getting torn up. Heavy left hands form Ryder, who eats an overhand right and calls Canelo on. Trading heat at the bell. 10-9, 89-81 Alvarez.

Round ten: Canelo continuing to stalk, Ryder continuing to put together close-range combinations. You cannot fault this man’s bravery. Solid counters from Ryder landing clean. Canelo tries a body shot, clinch. Ryder body shots, Canelo straight right. Ryder landing around the guard halfway through. Combos from Ryder. Canelo 1-2, eats jabs in return. Clinch. Trading near the corner. Jabs from Ryder. Good 1-2 from Canelo but I think Ryder actually outworked him this round. 10-9 Ryder, 98-91 Alvarez.

Round eleven: Both men attack the body early. Ryder still looking plenty spry. Lead right lands for Canelo, clinch. Potshotting at a distance. Lead hook from Canelo, then a heavy straight right. Clinch halfway through. Hook exchange, clinch. 1-2s from both, clinch. Canelo re-establishing control with the jab. Good 1-1-2 on the ropes. 10-9, 108-100 Alvarez.

Round twelve: Ryder comes out throwing to start the round. Canelo looking to land that right hand. Ryder jabs, Canelo body shot. Trading 1s and 2s. Solid Ryder body shots. Canelo 1-2s, Ryder body shots. Halfway through. Solid work from Ryder in the center. Both land their power hands on the exit. Ryder right hook, clinch. He bullies Canelo to the fence and lands some solid shots. More mugging from Ryder inside. 10-9 Ryder, 117-110 Alvarez.
