Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, TONIGHT (Sat., Sept. 9, 2023) with a decent pay-per-view (PPV) event, featuring the promotion’s most active champion, Israel Adesanya, defending his 185-pound strap against odd man in (emphasis on odd), Sean Strickland, in the ESPN+ headliner. In UFC 293’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, local fan-favorite, Tai Tuivasa, will look to snap a two-fight losing skid at the expense of surging Heavyweight contender, Alexander Volkov. We’ve got Manel Kape, Justin Tafa and Tyson Pedro, too!

205 lbs.: Da Woon Jung vs. Carlos Ulberg

Round one: Both men open with kicks, none of which land clean. One minute in. Still no meaningful connections from either man. There’s a couple calf kicks from Ulberg. Two minutes in. Inside low kick and body jab from Jung. Ulberg body jab, Jung low kick. Ulberg clearly waiting to counter and Jung’s aware of it, resulting in a nothing fight through the first three minutes.

Low kicks from Jung finally set Ulberg off, and he storms after Jung with a 1-1-2-1 that drops him against the fence. Ulberg tries to polish him off, but disengages when the finish isn’t there. Jung goes right back to the low kicks. One minute to go. Good jab from Ulberg. Jung low kick. 10-9 Ulberg.

Round two: Jung still reluctant to throw anything but low kicks, though they’re landing fairly well. Ulberg answering with jabs. One minute in. More jabs by Ulberg. Two minutes in. Low kick and right cross land for Jung, prompting Ulberg to answer with a combo. Stiff jab by Ulberg with two minutes to go.

Body kick lands for Ulberg. Jab after jab after jab. Jung content to follow at this point while throwing very little. Ulberg check hook. Another counter hook to answer a low kick. More low kicks from Jung. One minute to go. Ulberg counters a low kick with more jabs. Nice check by Ulberg, more jabs. Jung’s right eye is a mess at this point. 10-9 Ulberg.

Round three: Jung is finally trying to punch, though none of them are landing. Ulberg continuing to circle and jab to good effect. One minute in. Counter right by Jung. Decent combo. Brief clinch, more jabs by Ulberg. Solid cross by Jung, then an ugly-looking jab exchange two minutes in. Jung shoots, denied, briefly looks for a ninja choke. Hard knees from Ulberg. Better shot by Jung and this time he ends up on top, though Ulberg quickly stands. Elbow from Jung on the exit with two minutes to go.

Jung’s finally got some life in him, pushing forward and slinging punches. Now it’s Ulberg changing levels to no effect. Jung knees the body, reverses, gets taken down via body lock despite blatantly grabbing the fence twice. Ulberg looking for mount with a minute to go, dropping punches. More left hands from Ulberg. He wraps up the RNC in the final seconds, but can’t finish Jung off. 10-9 Ulberg.

The replay shows that Jung actually tapped in the last seconds, but the ref was on the other side and couldn’t see.

Final result: Ulberg def. Jung by submission (rear naked choke)


145 lbs.: Jack Jenkins vs. Chepe Mariscal

Round one: Jenkins slowly advancing. Mariscal tossing out kicks, falling short with most of them. Jenkins answers with a body kick that seems to freeze Mariscal for a second, then follows with a calf kick. One minute in. Jenkins low kick catches the cup, though Mariscal doesn’t take long to recover. Low kicks from both, 1-2 from Mariscal follows. Jenkins tries a head kick and eats a knee, then slugs it out with Mariscal in teh clinch. Two minutes in. Counters from Mariscal when they exit. Low kick to 1-2 by Jenkins. Mariscal forces him back with a combo, eats some tight punches, blitzes into the clinch. Jenkins separates with two minutes to go.

Big counter left by Jenkins to answer a knee. Both land calf kicks. Jenkins 1-2, calf kick, counter left, jab. Counter left with a minute to go. Mariscal staying aggressive, eats a body kick, then a jab while trying his own body kick. Jenkins lands a calf kick and gets hauled to the fence. Mariscal lands well inside before Jenkins slips out. 10-9 Jenkins.

Round two: Quick low kick from Jenkins to start. Swatting right lands for Mariscal and they trade inside. Mariscal coming on strong, winging power shots before tying up. One minute in. Mariscal going hard for the takedown, chipping away as he does. Jenkins reverses, gets reversed soon after. Mariscal knees the body, but Jenkins slips out two minutes in. Kicks from Mariscal, Jenkins puts himself back in the clinch and gets pressed against the fence. Mariscal looking for a single-leg. Two minutes to go.

Jenkins gets double underhooks, but Mariscal slams him face-first to the mat, destroying Jenkins’ elbow in the process when he tries to catch himself. Yeesh, that looks bad.

Final result: Mariscal def. Jenkins by TKO (elbow injury) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!


155 lbs.: John Makdessi vs. Jamie Mullarkey

Round one: Low kicks from Mullarkey as he circles. Nice jab. One minute in. Both land body kicks. Very tentative start to the fight. Quick Mullarkey jab. Check hook from Makdessi. Body kick met by counters from Mullarkey. Sharp Mullarkey low kicks two minutes in. Makdessi leaning heavily on the left body kick. Body and low kicks from Mullarkey. The low kicks are really working for him. Two minutes to go.

Mullarkey doing well at a distance, keeping Makdessi at bay with jabs and low kicks. Makdessi having a lot of trouble getting inside to land consistently. One minute to go. Low kick exchange. Solid two-piece from Makdessi, his best punches of the fight. Low kick exchange. They trade jabs at the bell. 10-9 Mullarkey.

Round two: Makdessi whiffs badly on a spinning back fist. Mullarkey continues to pump the jab, lands a long right behind it. Mullarkey landing low kicks every time Makdessi tries to throw a strike. One minute in. Makdessi catches a kick, doesn’t use it. Mullarkey body shots, continuing to potshot from outside of Makdessi’s range. Two minutes in. Mullarkey changes levels, denied. Some exchanges in center cage. Makdessi low kick catches the cup, Mullarkey shrugs it off. Makdessi tries a spinning back fist again. Two minutes to go.

Makdessi again catches a body kick, lands a left hook this time. Mullarkey continuing to outwork him by a large margin. One minute to go. Mullarkey combination, Makdessi spinning back kick. Trading kicks. Out of nowhere, Makdessi floors him with a nasty straight right, but he can’t capitalize. 10-9 Makdessi.

Round three: Makdessi showing a bit more life to start the third as they trade. Spinning back fist from Makdessi, hard cross by Mullarkey. Mullarkey lands a clean flying knee and eats a right cross for his trouble a minute in. Mullarkey body kick, stiff jab from Makdessi. Mullarkey lands a 3-2 and eats anotehr stiff jab two minutes in. Makdessi really looking to spin. He eats a low kick, elects to keep going. Lots of pressure from Makdessi, who backs off when he eats a leg kick. More low kicks from Mullarkey. Two minutes to go.

Makdessi aborts a spinning back kick. Mullarkey feints a level change. 3-2 glances off, low kick connects. Makdessi walking after him but can’t seem to cut Mullarkey off. Nice jab by Makdessi, left hook comes back at him. Another hard jab on the counter. One minute to go. Tight left hook catches Mullarkey leaning. Body kick and low kick. Low kick, counter left, lead right. Makdessi really finding the mark in the final minute, capping it off with a heavy straight right. 10-9 Makdessi; I think he squeaked it out but wouldn’t argue with giving Mullarkey the last two rounds, either.

Final result: Mullarkey def. Makdessi by unanimous decision


155 lbs.: Nasrat Haqparast vs. Landon Quinones

Round one: Quinones immediately pressuring with combination punching. Solid low kick. Front kick to the body. Haqparast with a body jab. Another body kick from Quinones. One minute in. Haqparast trying to answer the kicks with left hands. Quinones outworking him so far with kicks and punching combos. Body shot. Overhand left by Haqparast, who eats a calf kick two minutes in. Spinning back kick from Quinones, another calf kick. Haqparast body shot. Quinones spins, eats an overhand left. Both bang the body. Two minutes to go.

Haqparast getting inside more often now, though Quinones is keeping up the volume. Nasty body shot from Haqparast. Sneaky uppercut, counter left after eating a calf kick. Quinones really targeting that lead leg but he’s having more trouble staying away from Haqparast’s uppercuts and body shots. One minute to go. Nice left by Quinones. More body work and a hard uppercut from Haqparast, who’s cut by the right eye. Quinones puts him on the fence, eats an elbow on the break. Nice punch exchange. 10-9 Quinones.

Round two: Haqparast shoots in the opening seconds. Quinones reverses and they slug it out against the fence. Good low kick from Quinones on the exit. Continuing to pressure. Haqparast catches a kick and looks for a takedown, can’t get it. They separate a minute in. Haqparast stomping after him, landing hard left hands. Calf kick from Quinones, more lefts by Haqparast. Quinones knee, Haqparast body shot. Haqparast just walking into the pocket and letting his hands go. Quinones still trying to chop him down two minutes in. Hard combo by Haqparast against the fence. Quinones tries to push him back and Haqparast puts him on twinkle toes with a counter left. Haqparast looking for the finish and Quinones firing back. Good body kick by Quinones but he can’t stay out of punching range anymore. Two minutes to go.

Haqparast rips the body and they trade punches inside. Counter left, body kick, low kicks by Quinones. Haqparast cracks him with a pair of left hands in return. Great exchanges. One minute to go. Head kick from Quinones, body shots from Haqparast. Haqparast walking into the fire, swats him with some hard lefts. Big left hand catches Quinones retreating. Trading heat against the fence. Haqparast cracks him with a final volley before the bell. 10-9 Haqparast.

Round three: Haqparast continuing to march after Quinones, who lands a hard low kick in the opening seconds. Big overhand left hurts Quinones, who quickly gets his wits back. Brief clinch, Haqparast literally throws him aside and goes back to pressuring. Heavy body work a minute in. Jab upstairs. Low-high combos. Quinones still game but struggling off his back foot. Haqparast really punishing the body. Nice uppercut two minutes in. Short elbow after a combo hits air. Quinones trying to box with him, eating heavier return fire. Sharp lefts upstairs from Haqparast. Quinones bouncing arm punches off of Haqparast’s guard. Two minutes to go.

Body kicks from Quinones. Good left as they exit the clinch. Haqparast bullies him to the fence again and fires a combo. All the power is coming from Haqparast at this point. Counter overhand. Both attack the body. Nice Yair Rodriguez elbow from Quinones, which Haqparast shrugs off. Heavy combos by Haqparast with a minute to go. He slips, pops back up. Nice double-leg from Haqparast, can’t keep him down. Quinones body shot, Haqparast overhand left. Haqparast shoots, denied. They spend the last 20 seconds or so just hammering each other with punches. 10-9 Haqparast.

Final result: Haqparast def. Quinones by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Blood Diamond vs. Charlie Radtke

Round one: Radtke pressuring early. Diamond dings him with a left, but runs headlong into a counter two-piece that lets Radtke tie up against the fence. Radtke chasing a takedown from the rear waist lock. Diamond fighting the grip a minute in. Diamond manages to do so, but can’t break away. Two minutes in. Radtke continuing to grind against the fence. Knee from Diamond. Two minutes to go.

They finally separate. Hard knee from Diamond, 2-3 from Radtke. Nice double-leg by Radtke; he can’t keep Diamond down but he gets right back to the body lock against the fence. One minute to go. Ref Herb Dean wants more action as Radtke keeps controlling him. Diamond tries a whizzer kick and separates with 10 seconds to go. 10-9 Radtke.

Round two: Radtke back to advancing. Diamond firing punches and kicks off the back foot. Radtke eats a low blow and initially shrugs it off, but elects to take a bit to recover. That appears to be the right move, as he immediately wobbles Diamond with a left hook and tears into him against the fence. Diamond shows a bit of life, so Radtke takes his foot off the gas a minute in. Surprise level change by Diamond, who gets reversed against the fence. Double underhooks for Radtke, who’s searching for trips. The ref separates them with two minutes to go.

Hard counter right by Radtke. Left hook around the guard. Big 2-3 and another rear waist lock from Radtke. One minute to go. Radtke grinds him for another 45 seconds before they separate. Diamond lands a decent counter in the final seconds. 10-9 Radtke.

Round three: Diamond flicks out some quick kicks to start. Solid jab. They trade in teh center, then Diamond lands a glancing head kick before tying up. Radtke complains of a knee straying low and Diamond takes advantage to land en elbow before getting reversed. One minute in. Radtke continuing to grind against the fence. Knee from Diamond strays low two minutes in. The ref says he was about to separate them anyway, so they resume at range after the pause. Diamond unleashes a lengthy volley of strikes to mixed success before Radtke puts him on the fence again. Another low blow from Diamond that doesn’t get called. They separate again with two minutes to go.

Radtke’s got some nasty swelling above his right eye, but the eye isn’t shutting. Diamond puts him on the fence and drills him with yet another knee to the balls, which earns him a point deduction. They trade hands when they resume until Radtke puts him on the fence again. Radtke looking for punches, Diamond looking for knees with a minute to go. Ref demanding more action as Diamond lands knees to the body. They separate with 20 seconds to go and Radtke shoots back in within about five seconds. They end the fight against the fence. 9-9 with the point deduction.

Final result: Radtke def. Diamond by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Gabriel Miranda vs. Shane Young

Round one: Counter right lands for Young as Miranda flicks out kicks. Miranda catches a kick and tries to jump on Young’s back, securing the body triangle on his second attempt. Hunting for the RNC against the fence. Miranda quickly latches onto his bicep and steadily worms his forearm under Young’s chin, putting the Kiwi to sleep in short order.

Final result: Miranda def. Young by technical submission (rear naked choke)


170 lbs.: Kiefer Crosbie vs. Kevin Jousset

Round one: Quick low kick from Jousset to start things off. Crosbie’s return strays low, but the ref doesn’t pause things, prompting Crosbie to follow with a flurry off the guard. Body shot from Crosbie, good right and upstairs. One minute in. Body shot again lands for Crosbie, who eats a 3-2 in return. More low kicks from Crosbie, Jousset swats him away with a left hook. Stiff jabs by Jousset, backing Crosbie to the fence. Crosbie looks for a head kick, then smacks Jousset with a hard overhand right two minutes in. Brief clinch fight. Jousset finding the mark with jabs and leg kicks. Solid combo before tying up against the fence. Big level elbow on the break with two minutes to go.

Counter right catches Crosbie on one leg. Crosbie trying to push forward with flurries. Knee and right hand by Jousset when Crosbie crashes into the clinch. One minute to go. Jousset controlling the distance behind his jab. Good 2-3 into the clinch. Shoulder strikes. Crosbie tries a hip toss and Jousset pounces, forcing Crosbie to his knees before slipping in the body triangle and wrapping up the RNC in seconds.
