Former middleweight Kelvin Gastelum got promoted to first degree black belt at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu ahead of his welterweight return at UFC Austin, then celebrated the achievement by getting submitted by Sean Brady at Moody Center last weekend on ESPN from Texas.

Probably not the statement he wanted to make after struggling at 185 pounds.

“You did your thing well tonight Sean Brady!” Gastelum wrote on Twitter. “My congratulations! Well deserved big dawg! All the best to you in the future!”

“I’m 100X better than what I showed tonight,” Gastelum continued. “I’ll fix it and get back asap! Much love to everyone that supports the mission. Stay blessed everyone.”

Gastelum (18-8, 1 NC) has dropped six of his last eight dating back to early 2019.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 champ is just 32 years old and has an opportunity to get himself back into the title conversation with a couple of big wins. At the same time, another round of disappointing losses could send Gastelum into free agency in 2024.
