Get a detailed breakdown of the betting lines for UFC Vegas 83, which is set to hit UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, this weekend (Sat., Dec. 9, 2023), including best bets, underdogs, favorites and much more!
The APEX plays host to UFC’s penultimate show this Saturday (Dec. 9, 2023) when Song Yadong battles Chris Gutierrez in a main event originally planned to headlined UFC Shanghai. UFC Vegas 83’s co-headliner pits Khalil Rountree Jr. against short-notice replacement, Anthony Smith, while Tim Elliott steps up on just four days’ notice to battle Sumudaerji and Nasrat Haqparast battles it out with fellow Lightweight bruiser, Jamie Mullarkey.
We don’t have many opportunities left to squeeze profits out of UFC’s 2023 campaign, so here’s how to capitalize …
What Went Wrong at UFC Austin?
Punahele Soriano
Soriano came into the fight with exactly one gameplan, completely failed to adapt to Stoltzfus’ kicks, then ran out of steam. Credit to Stoltzfus, of course, but just a massively disappointing effort from the more gifted fighter in Soriano.
Wellington Turman
He was controlling the fight everywhere, as expected, but made a classic blunder when fighting a guy with no defense but a great chin: overcommitting after landing a damaging shot. Gooden punished his lapse beautifully, though Turman’s shoulders exploding afterwards certainly helped him out.
Kelvin Gastelum
Dude’s done. As well as Sean Brady performed, I can’t overlook how sluggish and disinterested Gastelum looked in there. His punches had no snap and he fell over the moment Brady so much as looked at his hips. My fault for not considering the mileage he’d built up over the years.
What Went Right?
Rodolfo Bellato
I swear on my life that “Trator” is usually way better than that, but at least he managed to scrape it out.
Deiveson Figueiredo, Joaquim Silva, Veronica Hardy and Arman Tsarukyan
Nicely done, though Hardy and Silva did have some rough patches.
UFC Vegas 83 Odds For The Under Card:
Kevin Jousset (-142) vs. Song Kenan (+120)
Jousset’s speed and defense are too poor to justify a bet at wider odds, but I can absolutely get on board at better than -150. The big man’s got significant height and reach advantages on his side, not to mention better clinch and ground games. Combine that with how inconsistent Song’s been of late and you’ve got someone worth investing in.
Hyun Sung Park (-535) vs. Shannon Ross (+400)
A number of lines have cratered these last few days, with Park’s just behind Tatsuro Taira’s in terms of severity. “Peace of Mind” was -345 as of last week, so -535 is a little hard to swallow. That said, Ross has been violently knocked out three times in a row and dropped seven times in his last five fights, so slap Park in there anyway.
Luana Santos (-155) vs. Stephanie Egger (+130)
Try a flier on Egger. Santos is coming up from Flyweight and struggled with another strong grappler in Jena Bishop last year. Santos is still young and improving, but there’s value in a bigger, more seasoned judoka.
Tatsuro Taira (-520) vs. Carlos Hernandez (+390)
Taira at -325 would have been a steal. At these odds, he’s probably still decent parlay material. Hernandez got eaten alive by a similarly capable grappler in Allan Nascimento, so as long as Taira avoids some of the self-inflicted errors that let Edgar Chairez keep it close, he should cruise to victory without issue.
Rayanne dos Santos (-162) vs. Talita Alencar (+136)
Consider a small bet on dos Santos, who laps Alencar in terms of cardio, footwork, and overall striking technique. dos Santos is admittedly undersized for the division, but she’s still taller and rangier than Alencar, not to mention a solid grappler in her own right.
Melquizael Costa (N/A) vs. Steve Garcia (N/A)
Jump on “Melk” if you can get better odds than -300. He’s too skilled and too durable for Garcia to overwhelm.
Daniel Marcos (N/A) vs. Carlos Vera (N/A)
I’m seeing Marcos as a -500 underdog on another site, and while he’s definitely way better than Vera, he also spent his entire last fight in first gear. Maybe leave this alone unless it gets closer to -300.
UFC Vegas 83 Odds For The Main Card:
Song Yadong (-380) vs. Chris Gutierrez (+300)
While Gutierrez probably isn’t getting quite enough respect from the bookies, I can’t object too much. Pedro Munhoz proved that “El Guapo” still can’t deal with fighters who pressure or counter well, a label that fits Song nicely. Use Song to beef up parlays.
Khalil Rountree Jr. (-245) vs. Anthony Smith (+200)
On the one hand, Rountree has produced some of the most legendary implosions I can remember. On the other hand, Smith let Johnny Walker kick him in the leg 50 times and arguably lost two rounds to Ryan Spann, another implosion artist who hasn’t won a fight that lasted more than 2:30 since 2019. I’ll put faith in Rountree with full knowledge of how stupid I’ll look if he bungles it again.
Nasrat Haqparast (-205) vs Jamie Mullarkey (+170)
There’s a compelling argument that Mullarkey should be 1-4 in his last five; those wins against Michael Johnson and John Makdessi were more than a little questionable. Haqparast, by contrast, looked like his old self in his September war with Landon Quinones. Hammer Haqparast at those odds.
Jun Yong Park (-180) vs. Andre Muniz (+150)
Despite the nickname, Park has always been a difficult man to hold down, which bodes ill for Muniz. The Brazilian has shown zero mental fortitude in recent efforts, so if he can’t tap Park in the first, it’s only going to get worse for him. It’s also worth noting that Park is a decent offensive wrestler and Muniz was 0-for-2 in stopping takedowns from Paul Craig, who botches more than 75% of his shots. Park has too many weapons on his side to lose this.
Tim Elliott (N/A) vs. Sumudaerji (N/A)
Allan Nascimento was -310 before he got yanked, which would have been an incredible bargain. “Puro Osso” is a better overall fighter than Elliott, but Elliott’s just as rough a style matchup for Sumudaerji, so consider betting on him if you can get him at similar odds.
