Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 84 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Jan. 13, 2024), streaming LIVE on ESPN+. UFC Vegas 84 will be headlined by the 205-pound showdown between light heavyweight bruisers Magomed Ankalaev and Johnny Walker, a rematch from their wonky “No Contest” at UFC 294 last Oct. in Abu Dhabi. Before that five-round do-over gets underway, long-time lightweight veteran Jim Miller collides with Mexican “Moggly” Gabriel Benitez, recently promoted to UFC Vegas 84’s co-main event after Manel Kape blew up the scale last Friday and forced the hasty cancelation of his Matheus Nicolau rematch.

Low kick exchange. Walker continues to try and spin. Ankalaev answers with a right hook that buzzes Walker, who unleashes a war cry in return. Ankalaev on the advance. Two minutes to go.
Low kick from Walker, whiffed overhand by Ankalaev. Walker tries a Brazilian kick, eats a leg kick. Ankalaev’s low kicks are the best weapon of the fight so far. One minute to go. Another inside low kick from Ankalaev. The next one lands right to the cup, prompting Walker to give Ankalaev a “c’mon, dude” look and take a good 90 seconds to recover. Round 2: Right hand and low kick from Ankalaev to start things off. The pressure’s working for him. Straight left to the body, low kick exchange. Another body shot, then an inside low kick. One minute in. Walker’s trying to bamboozle Ankalaev as he circles but most of what he dos is too telegraphed to land. Ankalaev intercepting or avoiding most of what comes his way as he pressures. Jab to body shot. Two minutes in. More patient pressure from Ankalaev. Another low kick has Walker trying to answer, and as he exits the pocket, Ankalaev levels him with an overhand right. One more gnarly shot on the ground and this one’s over.

Round 1: Early boxing exchanges in center cage. Miller answers a leg kick with one of his own. Benitez body shots, Miller counter left. Hard combo by Miller, can’t tie up. Benitez 1-2 and low kick a minute in. Miller lands his own leg kicks. Sharp straight left lands for Benitez. 1-2. He slips throwing a front kick, escapes danger. Miller pressuring, lands a low kick. Two minutes in. Counter two-piece buzzes Miller, who punches his way into the clinch and lands heavy knees downstairs. Counters by Benitez as he’s backed to the fence. Clean leg kick answered by one from Miller. Another leg kick. Two minutes to go.
Inside low kick from Miller bothers Benitez, who switches stance. Miller continuing to pressure and lands a knee before tying up. Counter right hook. Round 3: ESPN+ crashes between rounds, so we’ll start 30 seconds in. Hard left crosses from Miller. Counters from Benitez a minute in, stiff jab soon after. Miller really tearing into Benitez’s legs. Round 1: Simon comes out the gate quickly, looking to back Bautista up. Both firing kicks early. Nice jab by Bautista, who walks into a check hook a minute in. Glancing overhand right lands for Simon. Nice combo by Bautista, who tries a flying knee and eats a left hook for it. Well-timed reactive shot puts Simon on top in half guard. Bautista spins to his knees and stands two minutes in, trying to flurry on the exit. Low kicks by Simon, who just avoids a knee as he shoots in. Solid defense by Bautista, who lands a solid intercepting knee before getting taken to the fence with two minutes to go.
Bautista separates 40 seconds later. Low kick lands for him. Lead elbow from Bautista, who avoids a front choke with a minute to go. Combo by Simon soon after. Bautista body kicks have Simon retreating, but a flying knee attempt allows Simon to catch him in midair with another left hook. Simon changes levels and carries Bautista to his corner before settling in half guard a minute in. Bautista trying to use butterfly hooks to get space, does so and stands. Round 1: Hawes pressuring early, looking to work behind the jab. Ferreira whiffs on a right hook and nearly takes himself off-balance. He shoots, denied, eats a knee and jab. He shoots again, denied again, left hook from Hawes on the way up. One minute in. Counter right to knee by Hawes, who falls victim to a slick throw into side control. Sporadic elbows by Ferreira. Two minutes in. Ferreira not posturing up, but landing the occasional shot. Now he stands to drop punches and Hawes uses the space to pop back to his feet. Two minutes to go.
Stiff left lands for Ferreira off the back foot. Counter left hook by Hawes soon after. Ferreira head kick blocked, right hook connects. Hawes comes back with a clean jab, then ducks into a head kick and gets rattled by a flying knee behind it. Ferreira on the attack and Hawes changes levels, avoiding a sacrifice throw with a minute to go. Ferreira fires a spinning back fist and high knee. Continuing to stalk Hawes around the cage. Hawes avoids a knee, but a left hand glances off Hawes’ temple and sends him crumpling to the mat. A couple more bombs send him deep into the Shadow Realm and put a halt to this fight in the final seconds of the first.

265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski vs. Waldo Cortes-Acosta
Round 1: Cortes-Acosta looks for a body kick. Both try head kicks. Overhand right falls way short for “Salsa Boy” a minute in. Arlovski looking very light on his feet, tries a head kick and a shifting jab. Cortes-Acosta front kick falls short and they trade in the center. Body shot lands for him two minutes in. Don’t think either man has landed a meaningful shot to the head thus far. Arlovski tries to spin, lands a low kick, and backs away from a two-piece. Lead right lands for him. Cortes-Acosta crashes in with right hands but still can’t land clean. Two minutes to go.
Both whiff with right hands. Arlovski body kick blocked, Cortes-Acosta counters fall short. Body kick by Cortes-Acosta. He tries another flurry but can’t land clean. One minute to go. It’s a range issue right now; neither man really has it down. As I type that, Cortes-Acosta clips him with an ugly hook and tries to unload, but can’t find the mark. 10-9 Cortes-Acosta.
Round 2: Arlovski is moving well and avoiding most of Cortes-Acosta’s shots, but he’s not landing anything meaningful in return. Cortes-Acosta does a quick salsa dance and blocks some shots from Arlovski a minute in. Good check hook by Cortes-Acosta, then a body kick soon after. Again, not a lot of consistent offense from him, but it’s more than Arlovski’s offering. Cortes-Acosta lands a slap and Arlovski complains to the ref for some reason. Arlovski body shot. Calf kick met by since belly dancing from Cortes-Acosta. Cortes-Acosta whiffs on a spinning back fist. Two minutes to go.
Ugly flurry from Cortes-Acosta, nothing connects. He tosses out a series of kicks, none of which land clean. Nice lead right by Arlovski. Body shot. One minute to go. Cortes-Acosta loses his mouthpiece and Arlovski mimes kicking it. Now Arlovski’s waking up a bit, going high-low with a combo. Cortes-Acosta avoids a combo and chases him with a flurry. Counter uppercut. 10-9 Arlovski.
Round 3: Both look for jabs to start. Body kick from Arlovski. Both men still look fresh, though neither is overly eager to engage. Cortes-Acosta fires a flurry, landing a few glancing blows as Arlovski clinches. Looping left hook a minute in. Right upperrcut downstairs. Arlovski tries a head kick and gets a taunt in return. Both punch the body. Cortes-Acosta doing a bit more at the moment, eats another right downstairs two minutes in. Big lead right lands for Cortes-Acosta, his best shot of the fight, but Arlovski eats it and avoids the follow-ups. Arlovski tries to spin, then fires a blocked head kick. Two minutes to go.
Heavy right cross buzzes Arlovski and again he recovers quickly, weathering the flurry and coming back with a left hook. Hard body kick from Cortes-Acosta with a minute to go. Arlovski’s throwing back, but nothing heavy enough to swing the momentum back his way. They trade kicks. Spinning back kick from Arlovski after a long lull. Round 1: Semelsberger takes the center of the cage. Simultaneous kicks. Parsons ties up after just avoiding a straight right and they fight for position against the fence. Semelsberger separates. Lead right by Parsons a minute in. Nice right cross by Semelsberger. Quick combo in the center. Parsons body kick. Two minutes in. Parsons shoots, kicks out the base, and lands on top. Semelsberger quickly pops back to his feet and they spend a while jockeying for position before separating with two minutes to go.
Low kick exchange. Straight left by Semelsberger. He puts Parsons on the fence and looks for the Thai plum before separating. Continuing to trade low kicks. Combo by Parsons with a minute to go. Another inside low kick trips Semelsberger up and Parsons tries to go to work inside. Right hand by Semelsberger on the exit. 10-9 Semelsberger?
Round 2: Semelsberger looks for an early combo. Again Parsons trips him up with an inside low kick and looks for close-range combos. Semelsberger puts him on the fence and muscles him down into side control. Parson tries to regain guard, then stands a minute in, Semelsberger still attached. He separates soon after. Semelsberger’s cut form something by the middle of his forehead. Trading combos in the center. Good level change by Parsons puts him on top in half guard two minutes in. Semelsberger quickly scrambles up, Parsons still attached. Parson lifts and slams him down into guard, but gets kicked off soon after and puts Semelsberger on the fence. Outside trip briefly gets him down again. Two minutes to go.
Parsons still has his hands locked as he knees the thigh. Semelsberger tries to counter with the kimura but Parsons counters perfectly with an armbar. Despite some grimacing, Semelsberger manages to wrench his arm free, but remains on his back. Persons chips away as Semelsberger works his way up with a minute to go. Nice dirty boxing by Parsons, attacking the body in the clinch. Semelsberger reverses, looks for an elbow on the exit, and gets slammed one more time at the bell. 10-9 Parsons.
Round 3: Semelsberger advancing, putting punches together. Good right hand rattles Parsons, who changes levels in response. Good sprawl by Semelsberger,looking for a guillotine. Parsons defends a minute in and uses an underhook to sweep his way into top guard. Semelsberger kicks him off and stands and again Parsons stays attached. Semelsberger jumps guard on a guillotine. Two minutes in. Parsons stacks, then pops his head free. He stays attached as Semelsberger stands and dumps him to the mat yet again, landing punches and elbows. Two minutes to go.
Parsons latches onto his own guillotine, then tries to spin to Semelsberger’s back. He falls off the top but has enough juice to take Semelsberger down yet again. Looking for a kimura from half guard. He passes to side control and seems to have it, but Semelsberger wriggles his arm free with a minute to go. Parsons looking for the crucifix, lands elbows. Full mount, right into the arm triangle. Parsons drops it and elects to close the show with heavy ground-and-pound. 10-9 Parsons.
Final result: Parsons def. Semelsberger by unanimous decision
135 lbs.: Marcus McGhee vs. Gaston Bolanos
Round 1: McGhee advancing, switching stance. Bolanos catches a side kick, can’t use it. Spinning back kick attempt from McGhee. Low kick lands for Bolanos a minute in. Surprisingly sedate so far considering both men’s knockout pedigrees. Neither one committing to getting inside. There’s a 1-2 from McGhee, and as soon as Bolanos tries to throw back, McGhee takes him down with a double-leg. Bolanos quickly stands two minutes in. McGhee keeping the body lock, looking for knees. He slings Bolanos to the mat but doesn’t have control, allowing Bolanos to stand and separate. Trading hands with two minutes to go.
McGhee knocks Bolanos back with counters. Check hook lands clean, then a 3-2. Right hook, body shot. Bolanos smiles and comes back with hard kicks. Another counter right rattles Bolanos, who gets taken down trying to respond. McGhee on top in side control, postures up to drop punches with a minute to go. Hard right hands. Bolanos tries to stand and gets sat right back down with a pair of heavy punches. Stuck on one knee against the fence, eating punches from under the armpit. They stand and McGhee swats him with another pair of right hands, kicking off a vicious exchange before Bolanos ties up. 10-9 McGhee.
Round 2: Yet another counter right lands for McGhee. Two more and a combo behind them. Kicks from Bolanos, who absorbs more right hooks and comes back with volume. Nice body shot by McGhee. Another check hook a minute in. Low kick from Bolanos after a lull, 1-1-2 from McGhee to answer. McGhee combo, Bolanos body shot. Bolanos tries a Superman punch off the cage and eats his umpteenth right hook of the night. Two minutes in. Straight left to spinning back kick by McGhee. Nice lead right by Bolanos, his best shot in a while. Bolanos trying to pressure. Two minutes to go.
McGhee lands yet another right hook behind a head kick that finally drops Bolanos. McGhee wants the walk-off, but settles for hammering Bolanos when the latter rises, slamming him against the fence with a spinning back kick before freezing him with a straight left down the pipe for the finish.
Final result: McGhee def. Bolanos by TKO (punches)
135 lbs.: Farid Basharat vs. Taylor Lapilus
Round 1: Basharat busy with the kicks in the early going. Heavy leg kicks. Axe kick goes wide. Lapilus trying to find the range with his jab, lands a 1-2. One minute in. Basharat looks for a single-leg, then transitions to the body lock. Lapilus defending well but unable to break Basharat’s grip so far. Two minutes in. short elbow by Lapilus, who threatens a ninja choke and cracks Basharat with a left hand on the way up. Low kicks working for Basharat. Lapilus body shot with two minutes to go.
Counter 1-2 and low kick land for Basharat, who catches a teep and takes him down. Again Lapilus gets right back to his feet, firing a knee on the exit. Basharat comes back with a knee of his own. Kicks from Basharat, knee from Lapilus with a minute to go. Counter right by Basharat after blocking a head kick. Basharat tries a double-leg and finally manages to ground Lapilus. 10-9 Basharat.
Round 2: The low kicks continue to be Basharat’s best weapon. Body shot. Sneaky head kick from Lapilus answered in kind. Basharat shoots under a 1-2, more great balance by Lapilus to defend and separate. Basharat body shot a minute in. Body kick met by a Lapilus 1-2. Straight left and boy kick from Lapilus, who’s starting to find the mark a bit more this round. Nice body knee prompts Basharat to shoot again two minutes in. Single-leg gets Lapilus down, though he manages to stay on a knee. Basharat tries to spin to his back and Lapilus spins free, landing a knee as he does. 1-2 with two minutes to go.
Low kick from Basharat, jab exchange. Lapilus 1-2, eats a low kick. Nice Basharat body kick, gets caught by a jab on one leg. Blast double puts him on top at the base of the fence. One minute to go. Basharat playing tight in half guard. 10-9 Basharat.
Round 3: Lapilus tries a head kick, lands a jab. Basharat doing well with the right downstairs. Both men going in-and-out. 1-2 from Lapilus, low kicks from Basharat. One minute in. Both land their power hands. Good level change by Basharat puts him on top again at the base of the fence. Two minutes in. Basharat pulls him away from the fence, but Lapilus scoots back and stands. Right cross by Basharat as they exchange. Hard 1-2. Basharat lead right. He shoots under a left cross for a takedown with two minutes to go.
Side control for Basharat. One minute in. No offense from him but Lapilus not offering much either. Lapilus finally spins to his knees and Basharat tries to cinch up an anaconda. Lapilus manages to defend and stand, eating a right hand as he does. 10-9 Basharat.
Final result:
145 lbs.: Westin Wilson vs. Jean Silva
Round 1: Wilson trying to feel things out with kicks, absorbs one in return. Silva lands another body kick, then cracks Wilson on the way in with a left hook but doesn’t jump on him. Silva on the advance. He whiffs on a lead left, then turns it into a slick takedown before letting Wilson back to his feet. Two minutes in. Another check hook by Silva, who avoids a clinch knee. 3-2 sends Wilson to teh mat but Silva stays patient, hurting Wilson again when Wilson pops to his feet and continuing to sharpshoot. Anotehr left hand takes out Wilson’s legs, though he somehow makes it to his feet with two minutes to go.
Silva catches him changing levels with a jump knee, scrambles out of the takedown, and returns to the feet. Another right hand freezes Wilson and again the ref lets it continue despite Silva hurting him with every punch. A pair of monster uppercuts finally force the stoppage.

155 lbs.: Tom Nolan vs. Nikolas Motta
Round 1: Nolan takes the center and they get to trading kicks and punches. Solid body kicks from both. Hard left hook by Motta. When Nolan next steps in, Motta is ready with a counter right that folds “Big Train.” Nolan’s lucid enough to try and scramble, but Motta will not be denied, pounding the Brit out for a major upset.
Final result: Motta def. Nolan by TKO (punches) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!
125 lbs.: Felipe Bunes vs. Joshua Van
Round 1: The height difference is extremely noticeable from the get-go, and Bunes is happy to take advantage with leg kicks. Van backs him up with a 1-1-2, trying to get inside against the fence but struggling to get past the kicks. One minute in. Quick lead right from Bunes. There’s a good cross from Van, who’s also leaning on a snap kick downstairs. Bunes caps a combo with a low kick. Van’s pressure starting to pay dividends two minutes in. Nice combos from Bunes. Front kick as he retreats. Quick straight right, glancing combo from Van in return. Another right by Bunes as he tries to disengage, then a level change with two minutes to go.
Van defending against the fence. He fires a knee that lands right to the cup, pausing the action. They reset in the center and Bunes goes back to the low kicks. Van is still getting the worst of it but he’s consistently keeping Bunes circling near the fence. One minute to go. Bunes changes levels and hits a slick single to land on top in side control. Van sweeps out of mount in the waning seconds. 10-9 Bunes
Round 2: Van back on the advance, trading strikes. Nice body kick from Bunes, who shoots under a combo and puts him on the fence. Foot stomps from Bunes a minute in. Van reverses, then hurts him with an elbow and knee that force another shot. Big Browne elbows by Van, who scrambles up as soon as he hits the mat. Van immediately gets back to work with murderous combos, walking a fading Bunes down before taking him down two minutes in. He briefly considers a heel hook, then starts pounding from guard. Bunes tries to spin for an armbar, nothing there. Van lets him up, then eats a 3-2. Heavy combos from Van with two minutes to go.
Bunes blasts him with a clean uppercut but he can’t slow Van down. Punches and elbows from the shorter man. Right hand snaps Bunes’ head back and Van follows with body shots before avoiding a wheel kick. Bunes changes levels again, eats shots on the exit. Van walking him down with a minute to go. Body shots, knees, combos piling up against the fence. An overhand finally sends Bunes to the mat, and though Bunes initially manages to close his guard, Van unloads some gnarly bombs to force the stoppage.
