After nearly toppling Heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, in his professional boxing debut, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, faces another of this generation’s premier big men today (Fri., March 8, 2024) when he takes on former unified champion, Anthony Joshua, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Solid body jab from Joshua answered in kind. Halfway through. Overhand right from Ngannou sneaks around the guard. Ngannou switches southpaw, which proves ill-advised when Joshua’s straight right sits him down. Ngannou’s up at eight. Joshua just misses with a right cross and ties up. 10-8 Joshua.

Round two: Joshua staying patient and sharpshooting. 1-2 downstairs. Counter right into the clinch. Body jab. Ngannou looks way too twitchy and Joshua ties up again halfway through. More jabs by Joshua prompt Ngannou to charge in and Joshua meets him with a monster of a counter right for knockdown number two. Ngannou beats the count and tries to resume, but that proves his worst decision yet, as Joshua uncorks a monster right cross that absolutely folds “The Predator.”

Round one: Zhang slowly advancing and pawing with the jab. Parker falls short with body shots, avoids a 1-2. Halfway through. 1-2 from Parker, Zhang answers with a left downstairs. Jabs from Zhang landing well. Parker jabs the body, tries to follow with a left hook upstairs. 10-9 Zhang.

Round two: Both fire their rear hands to the body. Parker falls short with a 1-2, then splits the guard with another cross. Big overhand right by Parker, quick straight left by Zhang in return. Halfway through. Zhang tries to open up in the corner, lands a glancing right hook that makes Parker tie up. Check hook lands for Parker over Zhang’s pawing jab. Zhang tries to open up, clinch. They trade in the center, right hook from Zhang, right to the body from Parker. Zhang pops him with a straight left. 10-9 Parker, 19-19.

Round five: Parker continuing to attack the body. Zhang still advancing, gets clinched. Parker pawing with the jab, slowly pushing forward. Both just miss with right hands halfway through. Parker continuing to attack the body. Left hook upstairs, straight left from Zhang in return. Zhang fires a combo against the ropes, follows with a straight left. 2-1. They stare for a bit, then Parker cracks him with a straight right and left hook before tying up. Both fire heavy rights in the final seconds. 10-9 Parker, 47-47.

Round six: Zhang too patient at the moment as Parker picks his shots. Solid jabs. 1-2 from Zhang, clinch. Parker fires a 1-2 of his own, eats a stiff jab. Parker not doing a ton, but it’s enough against the low output of Zhang. 10-9, 57-56 Parker.

Round seven: 1-2 from Parker, then one to the body. Zhang lands a left hand downstairs, then an uppercut that catches Parker circling. Short combo by Zhang, body shot from Parker in the clinch. Round eleven: Parker potshotting, landing combinations as Zhang plods forward. Short combo by Zhang, fast hands by Parker. Zhang eats a 1-2, comes back with a left cross. Halfway through. More body shots by Vargas. Ball tries to blitz, gets clinched. Vargas still using his length to keep Ball at bay. Body shot strays low, right cross lands clean, body shot, overhand right. Round two: Ball tries to barrel in, gets clinched. Vargas doing a great job of playing keep-away. Triple jab lands for him. Double left hook. Ball ties up and both land in the clinch. Ball warned for hitting on the break, then tries to charge after Vargas. Nice counters from Vargas halfway through. Ball barrels into the clinch and puts together a solid combo. Round six: Ball genuinely has no answer for Vargas’ length and technique so far. His only way to get inside is to sprint after Vargas and Vargas is constantly picking him off as he does. Vargas slips in the clinch, then rips the body. Warned for a low blow. Ball tries to tee off in the corner and they talk trash inside. Vargas waves him on, then rips the body halfway through. Nasty counter broadside by Vargas. Ball lands on the ropes, Vargas again waves him on before attacking the body. More body shots. Clinch, another kidney shot from Ball. Clinch. Ball rushes in and they trade to end the round. 10-9, 60-54 Vargas.

Round seven: More sharpshooting by Vargas. Ball lands a right hand and has a good sequence in the corner as Vargas complains about an elbow. Combos by Vargas. Body shot. Ball marching after him, eats another right hand downstairs, then puts Vargas on shaky legs with an overhand right. Vargas cracks him with a counter right, then takes a knee in the clinch to buy time. Big left hook from Ball and he’s on the attack. Vargas backs him off with a barrage. Heavy right hand from Ball, murderous body shots by Vargas. Swarming shots by Ball against the fence as Vargas tries to tie him up. They trade hooks at the bell. 10-9 Ball, 69-64 Vargas.

Round eight: Straight punches from Vargas, who avoids a blitz. Body shot. Ball tries to mug, gets tied up. Nice shovel hook by Vargas, right hand by Ball as the latter tries to tee off on the ropes. 1-2-3. Halfway through. Left hook and Vargas flops a bit in the clinch. Nice jab by Ball. Clinch. Body shots by Vargas. Ball charges, Vargas flops. They tie up, and as Vargas flops, Ball cracks him with a left hook on the way down. The ref calls it a knockdown. 10-8 Ball, 77-74 Vargas.

Round nine: Ball having more success charging in. Vargas firing jabs and straights, catching Ball on the way in. Ball rushes in, clinch. Vargas to the body. Short-range blows from Ball, clinch. Long right hand. More swarming by Ball halfway through. Vargas body shots, then a swatting right hook that stings Ball. Left hook exchange. Sharp counter right by Vargas, clinch. He looks for uppercuts, then punches his way off the ropes. Ball whiffs on a final flurry. 10-9, 87-83 Vargas.

Nice left hook as I type that. Ball charges in as Vargas circles along the ropes and cracks him with an overhand right for another knockdown. Round twelve: Ball charging, solid counters by Vargas. Clinch against the ropes. Ball absorbing the counters on his guard, lands a combo on the ropes. Swarming near the corner. Body shots by Vargas. Counter jab. Halfway through, more body shots by Vargas. Ball lands a combo on the ropes. Clinch. Ball rushes in, lands a 1-1-2 before getting clinched. Vargas bangs the body. More body shots. Right hand whiffs, Kurbanov answers to the body. Nice 1-2 by Madrimov, best shots of the round. Kurbanov answers to the body, Madrimov does the same. 10-9 Kurbanov.

Round two: Madrimov continuing to advance, firing the jab downstairs. Kurbanov tries his own body shots. Bouncing shots off of Madrimov’s guard. Madrimov goes low-high with a 1-3. Halfway through. Sharp right cross into the clinch. Kurbanov trying to counter but a step behind. Right cross by Madrimov met by a combo in the center. Leaping left hook upstairs. Kurbanov to the body, whiffs on an uppercut. One more 1-2 from Madrimov in the waning seconds. 10-9 Madrimov, 19-19.

Round three: Early clinches, body shots from Kurbanov. Combo from Madrimov upstairs. Kurbanov finds the mark with some right hands, controlling the first minute with output. Nasty cross from Madrimov, then a leaping hook behind it. Kurbanov retreats to the ropes and shells up, pausing to posture for a moment. Halfway through. Kurbanov digs a right to the body and circles off. Madrimov body shot, then a combination in the corner. Vicious overhand right, then another and Kurbanov’s crumpling against the ropes. Madrimov pours it on and in comes the ref. A bit early in my view but Kurbanov’s not complaining.

Lightweight: Gavin Gwynne vs. Mark Chamberlain

Round one: Two hours later, it’s finally time for the second fight

Both men trading jabs and straights, Chamberlain the busier in the opening minute. Solid combinations. Chamberlain landing some impressive volume as Gwynne plods forward. Nice uppercut. Clinch halfway through. Chamberlain eating Gwynne up with combinations to the head and body. Gwynne finally lands a decent right hand and gets clinched. His right eye is a mess as Chamberlain continues to tee off. 10-9 Chamberlain.

Round two: Gwynne firing the occasional jab or straight as Chamberlain tears into him with rapid-fire volumes. Lots of clinching. Short blows from Chamberlain, sneaking around and through Gwynne’s high guard at the halfway point. Four-piece combo, body shot, cracking left upstairs. Nasty uppercuts on the back foot. Clinch. Gwynne’s just too slow and static to get anything going as Chamberlain piles up the damage. Brutal chopping left in the final seconds. 10-9, 20-18 Chamberlain.

Round three: They pause in the corner to check out Gwynne’s eye, but send him back out anyway. Gwynne showing more pressure and volume, still getting eaten up by the sharper puncher in Chamberlain. Vicious left cross and they pause to put Gwynne’s mouthpiece back in. Gwynne might have a broken orbital. Clinch punches. More, including some to the back of the head. Nasty body shots by Chamberlain. Gwynne’s gutsy but nothing else; his shots seem like arm punches and Chamberlain’s landing virtually nonstop. One more straight left for the road. 10-9, 30-27 Chamberlain.

Round four: Chamberlain picking his shots, Gwynne failing to do damage with his own offerings. More rabbit punches from Gwynne in the clinch. Brutal counter uppercut by Chamberlain. Halfway through. More uppercuts, straight left. Brutalizing Gwynne in the corner. They mug each other in the clinch. Chamberlain backs him to the ropes and clobbers his body for about 10 seconds straight before Gwynne’s corner throws in the towel.

Round one: Huni orthodox, Lerena southpaw. Huni light on his feet as Lerena slowly advances. Right hands from Huni, straight left from Lerena against the ropes. Huni finding the mark with the right cross as he sticks and moves. Double left hook to pivot. Lerena weathers some sharp shots, then opens up in the corner halfway through. Huni’s doing a good job of angling out when Lerena tries to pin him down, mixing straight shots to the head and body. Good exchange in the corner. Lerena backs him up, weathers a series of jabs and a right cross before tying up. 10-9 Huni.

Round two: Lerena buzzes Huni with an early 1-2 and presses the advantage with high volume. Huni weathers it and tries to blast through his guard against the ropes before getting clinched. Sharp jabs by Lerena. Hard right hook stings Huni again and Lerena tees off with a lengthy flurry before clinching halfway through. Huni now looking to crowd Lerena and punish the body. Hard straight right, not much coming back from Lerena. Clinch. Nasty combos by Huni, mixing it up to the head and body. Sneaky shots inside. Lerena wakes up and throws heat in the final seconds. 10-9 Lerena, 19-19.

Round three: Huni sitting down more on his shots, looking to get through and around Lerena’s high guard with combinations. Significantly outworking Lerena at the moment, circling and potshotting. Halfway through. Huni’s back in cruise control, outmaneuvering the flat-footed Lerena and picking his shots. Lerena tries to chase in the final seconds and they trade in the corner. 10-9, 29-28 Huni.

Round four: Lerena backs Huni to the corner, but Huni gets the better of the exchange before disengaging. The movement, accuracy, and variety of Huni are paying dividends so far. Slick move from Huni to reverse position in the corner and fire combos. Lerena’s just not doing enough. Halfway through. Lerena gets Huni to the ropes but again it’s Huni landing the more telling shots, even in bad positions. Lerena corners him and pumps the jab, then lands a glancing overhand left. Clinch. Slick combinations by Huni. Lerena lands an overhand left, eats a straight right in the final seconds. 10-9, 39-37 Huni.

Round five: Huni continues to do work on the outside. Clinch. Lerena still advancing, still not throwing enough to take advantage. There’s a solid sequence in the corner halfway through. Huni pumps the jab, eats a cross. 1-3, pivot. It’s become a bit of a sparring match, Huni prioritizing slickness over power. Lerena tries to open up in the corner. 10-9, 49-46 Huni.

Round six: Clean two-piece from Huni to start. Body shots from Lerena, then some good sequences in the pocket. Huni backs him to the ropes and both land two-piece combos. Brief clinch, hard left hooks by Huni on the exit halfway through. Huni slowly advancing, lands to the body against the ropes. They trade uppercuts. Huni still mixing his attack nicely, putting together clean power shots. Lerena takes the initiative in the last 10 seconds. 10-9, 59-55 Huni.

Round seven: Lerena cracks Huni with a straight left, prompting Huni to come back with a combo and do some posturing. Combinations from Lerena, now more active than he’s been in some time. Double left hook to right cross by Huni. Sharp combos upstairs. Lerena’s foot is back off the gas. Huni potshotting, heavy combo by Lerena. Huni backs him to the ropes and puts together a combo. Lerena extremely passive after that one big burst. Clash of heads. Lerena tries to explode in the final seconds. 10-9, 69-64 Huni.

Round eight: Solid exchanges to start the round, then a clinch 30 seconds in. Huni takes the reins again when they break, methodically working the head and body. Good combinations piling up for him. Halfway through. Lerena fires a flurry off the ropes and clinches. Hard body shots from Huni. High-low left hooks, clinch. He seems to be fully in gear, while Lerena’s output is too sporadic to retake the initiative. 10-9, 79-73 Huni.

Round nine: All Huni at this point, landing steady volume without leaving himself exposed. Lerena absorbing most of it without issue but declining to fire back. They trade in the center halfway through. Combo by Lerena, Huni tries a 1-2 in return. Huni backs him up to the ropes and Lerena wakes up long enough to throw for about 15 seconds before clinching. Huni cracks him with a clean right cross in return. 10-9, 89-82 Huni.

Round ten: Lerena comes out with some pep, but that lasts less than a minute before Huni gets back to sharpshooting. Halfway through. Huni gets a bit too casual, though, and Lerena blasts him with a counter left that has Huni doing the chicken dance. Lerena trying to get him out of there but he might be too tired to do it. Huni’s legs still look bad as he tries to fire back and tie up. Heavy 1-2 from Lerena, then another counter left that hurts Huni. Huni waving him on, clinch. Lerena’s just too gassed, falling into the clinch before whiffing on a last-second left. 10-9 Lerena. 98-92 Huni.

Final result: Huni def. Lerena by unanimous decision
