LIVE! Lomachenko Vs. Kambosos Results & Play-By-Play!

The IBF lightweight title is on the line tonight as hometown boy, George Kambosos, looks to score another upset, this time at the chin of Vasiliy Lomachenko

Tonight (Sat. May 11, 2024), live from the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, we’ve got the IBF lightweight championship on the line as Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KO) takes on George Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KO). This fight is the culmination of three world titles on the line tonight, starting at 10 p.m. ET. on ESPN and ESPN+.

Loma and Kambo have been in each other’s orbits for years, but due to circumstances inside the ring (Vasyl losing to Teofimo Lopez while George was the IBF mandatory) and outside of the ring (Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading to Lomachenko fighting in the conflict), this fight just never materialized. Until now. Kambosos has scored another big name boxer to come Down Under and fight a big fight on his home turf.

Kambosos is coming off a rebound win against Maxi Hughes to claim the IBO lightweight title while Loma hasn’t fought in almost a year since his close loss to Devin Haney as he failed to gain the unified lightweight belts (those being the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring titles). Pundits are picking the Ukrainian to win pretty handily, as places like DraftKings have him as a -700 favorite.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, as many view Kambosos to be a Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none type boxer. He’s not a knockout artist, he’s not super quick or a defensive wizard. He’s a decent, fairly sound boxer. The problem is that unless Father Time has caught up to Lomachenko, it will take significantly more than just decent fundamentals to topple the former two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Also on the undercard are two more gold belts up for grabs, including Andrew Moloney (26-3 (1), 16 KO) taking on Pedro Guevara (40-3-1, 22 KO) for the WBC interim super flyweight title. Finally, champion Nina Hughes (6-0. 2 KO) seeks to make her second defense of the WBA bantamweight championship, this time against Cherneka Johnson (15-2, 5 KO). Yes, the same one who weighed in with body paint above the waist last year.

LOMACHENKO VS. KAMBOSOS LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY:

Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos Jr., IBF lightweight championship:

Round 1: Kambosos in white with blue trim, Loma in black with blue trim. Kambosos strikes first with a right hand to the body. Mildly slow round so far – Kambosos hits to the body again as Lomachenko appears to be doing his normal routine of gathering information early. There’s a nice 3-punch combo from Loma, and he landed at least one left in that bunch. Lomachenko with a straight left and a hook a few seconds later.

Round 2: They show the unofficial punch stats, and it shows that Kambosos only landed 11% of his punches that round. Loma may have gotten whatever information he needs already, as he’s pressuring fairly early in the fight (for him). Again, a combo from Loma. Left by Kambosos. Loma with a pair of rights. Kambo with a good right to the gut. Lomachenko with a flurry that snaps the head of the Aussie back a couple times as the round draws to a close.

Round 3: Left-right for Loma. Right hand around the guard of Kambosos. He answers back with a right of his own, but I’m not sure if it landed clean. Kambosos goes too low and gets a warning from the ref. Uppercut by Kambosos. Nice exchange from both men to end the round, although Kambosos was the one whose head got popped a bit worse it looked.

Round 4: The overhead view shows off an amazing look at Loma’s fancy footwork. Kambosos with a right. Loma with a series of nice jabs. There’s a good left, too. Triple jab. Loma dancing around Kambosos now.

Round 5: Loma up 21-1 on the CompuBox stats for that round. Yikes. Bradley on the mic explaining how fun Loma’s push-forward-and-not-get-hit style is. He is not wrong – unless you’re a Kambosos fan, this skill exhibition is amazing to watch. Loma dances to his left and Pez-dispenser’s Kambosos’ head back. Loma snaps in a left, and stumble Kambosos, but that was more a slip than a knockdown, despite his glove glancing onto the canvas. Rightfully called not a knockdown by the ref.

10-9 Lomachenko, 50-45 Lomachenko

Round 6: First decent left by Kambosos in a couple rounds. He’s starting to throw and land. A bit to the body, then the head. Finally, some traffic coming back down the highway. Sweet short left by Lomachenko. Kambosos complains about the back of the head, but that was because he ducked into it.

Round 7: Bradley taking a dump on the flaws of Kambosos here. Kambosos with a lunging left hook that hits air – Kambosos is so off balance from that swing that he falls on his face on his own accord. Lomachenko backs Kambosos into the corner and throws out a long combination. Kambosos to the body, is countered with a left to the nose. Kambosos gets hit twice to the ribs. They step in and dirty box at the end of the round with both men landing a bit.

Round 8: 1-2 by the Aussie, and he lands the two. Loma surges forward with a double left. Kambo looking a bit rough to the face here, as he’s gotten touched a lot so far. Lomachenko with a jab, Kambosos responds with a hook to the body. Left by the Ukrainian, and more body work by Kambosos. Nice counter by Loma.

Round 9: Both men crack to the body. There’s a nice right to the breadbasket by Kambosos. That right to the gut has been Kambo’s best punch. Lomachenko with a nice combo, gets in a series of lefts as he dances around Kambosos. Right by Kambosos, and one by Lomachenko. This might be generous, but

10-9 Kambosos, 89-83 Lomachenko

Round 10: Kambosos is getting outclassed, but he’s too tough to go down. He’s gonna keep getting beat up. Loma still pressing forward, lands a right shovel hook. Lead left. Bit of a slow round, comparatively.

Round 11: The punches landed stat has it as 157-38. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that. Kambosos with his one good punch – the right to the body. Left by Loma, right by Kambo, right by Loma. Lomachenko with a couple rights. Kambosos slips. He’s back up, just to eat a body shot that sends him to the knees. He’s back up, but Lomachenko is swarming all over him. Down goes Kambosos again as the towel comes flying in!
