Cherneka Johnson scored a win over reigning WBA bantamweight champion Nina Hughes tonight (Sat., May. 11, 2024), winning a majority decision from inside RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
While Johnson is now a boxing champion again; unfortunately, her win will be remembered because of a dumb blunder by the ring announcer.
Daniel Hennessey, who is apparently a credentialed boxing ring announcer, declared Hughes the winner of the fight and then, seconds later, lined both of the ladies up to declare the real winner, Johnson … which caused a wild scene.

Like everyone else, the color commentators were stunned and blurted out, “Is this guy for real? … “I’m dead.”
For such a close contested boxing match, it was a horrible botch, and to top it all off, Hennessey didn’t even apologize.
At least UFC’s Bruce Buffer did last weekend.
Nevertheless, Johnson, 29, is back in the win column since losing the IBF female Super Bantamweight title to Ellie Scotney last year.
Hughes, 41, had her undefeated record and title snatched.
