“The Diamond” is a company man forever.
Dustin Poirier lost his third undisputed Lightweight title fight to Islam Makhachev tonight (Sat., June 1, 2024) when he got choked unconscious with a D’Arce choke in the fifth round from inside Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey (watch highlights).
On cue, Poirier hinted at retirement after his loss by saying he has nothing to fight for anymore.
During the UFC 302 press conference, UFC CEO Dana White praised Poirier and said he’ll always have a spot with the promotion.
“I think Dustin, coming out of that [Benoit] Saint Denis fight, had a lot more confidence than he had going in. We put you in these positions to do great things and achieve greatness, and he was that close tonight,” White told reporters. “It’s up to him [if he wants to retire]. It’s not up to me. He knows what he wants and doesn’t want. He knows how he felt and how he feels right now. Listen, he’s a star. He can stay around here as long as he wants to.”
If Poirier does call it quits, he will end with a 30-9-1 record, 22 wins inside the octagon, and an interim Lightweight title. He won Fight of the Night ten times (including his fight with Makhachev)
