Dustin Poirier took some damage in his UFC 302 title tilt against Lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev, this past weekend (June 1, 2024).
Despite coming up short in the final round of his third career undisputed UFC title fight, “The Diamond” left it all on the line and arguably performed better than in his previous two attempts. Unfortunately for Poirier, before Makhachev sunk in the d’arce choke submission finish (watch highlights), he suffered some nasty injuries.

“Nose is broken bad,” Poirier tweeted. “rib is broken and my ACL is partially torn. FIGHT LIFE [swords emoji]
“Knee hit my face. It was the headbutt before. It was accidental, but it hurt,” he concluded.
Poirier, 35, heavily speculated retirement ahead of this last fight no matter the outcome. In the immediate aftermath, he remained undecided on his future and highlighted how he’ll go back to relax and recover with his family, who hopes he does call it a career.
Although Poirier has yet to claim a UFC world title in his 40-fight career (30-9, 1 no contest), he’s largely considered an all-time great at Lightweight. As a consolation of sorts, he did win the interim title in his Max Holloway rematch in April 2019. Aside from that, we’ve been treated to instant classic after instant classic from Poirier, whether he’s the one finishing his opponents or going out on his shield.
