The biggest name in boxing, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez recently put pen to paper for a super middleweight title defense against current NABO titleholder Edgar Berlanga, scheduled for Sat., Sept. 14, 2024 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both fighters took the stage on Monday for the kickoff press conference in New York, where the 27 year-old “Chosen One” displayed a sizable height advantage over the 34 year-old Mexican.
“Who else can Canelo Alvarez fight right now other than David Benavidez?” promoter Eddie Hearn told Boxing News. “For whatever reason, he’s moved to light heavyweight, so that doesn’t look like it’s happening. So, I think Edgar Berlanga is a good pick. I think he’ll give him a good fight, and it’ll be a good event. But I don’t see a lot of other options out there for Canelo Alvarez, if I’m honest. One thing I can say about Canelo Alvarez is he will never duck a challenge. There’s no one he’s afraid of.”
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is coming off a decision win over Jaime Munguia back in May. As for Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), he’s looking to build on his sixth-round knockout victory over Padraig McCrory earlier this year in Orlando. Their “sweet science” fight card will run head-to-head with Noche UFC “O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili” at The Sphere, also booked for Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 14 in Las Vegas.
