Soccer (football) star Danny Simpson makes his boxing debut today along with two Misfits championship bouts

Good day to all of you combat sports fans lusting for something to watch this weekend. Misfits 17 is the thing and we’re covering it here. It does goes down tonight, August 31, 2024, from inside the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, beginning at 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT / 6:00 pm BST. It’s available live on DAZN for $39.99.

With pre-fight brawls, slaps, and cringe trash talk, Misfits 17 has gotten closer to a Russian reality TV show than a standard boxing card, but it’s always a bunch of people trying to hype stuff up anyway, so what else is new, right? Youtubers and TikTokers gonna influence.

Now, a lot of us here who frequent MMA Mania (and the author) are from the American side of the pond and aren’t very familiar with some of these fellas. Keep in mind that Misfits is a promotion run by British folks (KSI, Mams Taylor, Nisse and Kalle Sunderland) so having a name soccer player in Danny Simpson is a big deal for the influencer boxing scene. Simpson was a key defensive part of the Premier League winning Leicester City squad from 2016 and is very much a household name in that part of the world.

Elsewhere on the card, we have Misfits regulars and title-holders, Anthony Taylor and Deen the Great, taking on fresh challengers. In Taylor’s case, it’s a name very familiar to the crowd here, as it is MMA legend Anderson Silva’s son, Gabriel Silva, getting his first crack at gold.

Misfits Boxing 17 Danny Aarons vs. Danny Simpson full results & play-by-play:

Danny Aarons vs. Danny Simpson

Round 1: Aarons in black & pink, Simpson in black and gold. Aarons with a couple early connections. Simpson with a lot of big movements, but he’s not landing much early. Settling a little bit here and getting to the target a bit now. Aarons gets back to the jab and lands.

10-9 Aarons

Round 2: Aarons ducks a big overhand. Does eat a jab a little while later. Right hand by Aarons. Simpson with two good rights.

10-9 Simpson

Round 3: Aarons being aggressive early, clips in a right. Both men land jabs. Left connects for Aarons. Aarons throwing a combination – not sure anything landed. I take that back, there’s a clean left hook. Simpson fires back with a right. Aarons walks forward into a couple jabs.

10-9 Aarons

Round 4: 102 for Aarons. He’s landing a lot of volume since round 2. Simpson with a big swing, but whiffs. His next punch lands, but Aarons shrugs it off. Straight right by Aarons. Simpson missing.

10-9 Aarons

Final Result: Danny Aarons and Danny Simpson fight to a split draw

Deen the Great vs. Dave Fogarty for the MFB Lightweight Title

Round 1: Fogarty in white, Deen trolling in the Irish orange, green and white. Fogarty starting off with jabs while Deen content to evade. Now Deen is countering. Fogarty pops him back. The corner keeps calling him “yogurty”, and I don’t know if that’s on purpose or what. Fogarty’s jab is pretty good, to be honest. Right by Fogarty at the buzzer.

10-9 Deen in a close round

Round 2: Two nice rights by Deen. Fogarty gets in a left. I’m continued to be impressed by the accurate jab of Fogarty. Very good for a boxing newbie. Fogarty with a 1-2. He backs Deen up to the ropes and he’s swinging now. Fogarty getting in a number of punches. Deen fires back with a right. Another big one to the body and Fogarty backs up five steps.

10-9 Fogarty, but I could easily see Deen stealing that back with those two big ones at the end.

Round 3: Deen counters with rights over the jab of Fogarty. Another. Fogarty gets Deen back into a corner and he’s throwing now. Fogarty with a combo. Deen with an overhand. A big right hand and down goes Fogarty. He’s up immediately and takes the 8. He’s wobbling. Deen throwing hard to try and get the finish. Smack bang with one second left, he lands an absolutely FLUSH right that sends Fogarty directly onto his butt. The ref waives it off right away.

Final Result: Deen the Great defeats Dave Fogarty

Anthony Taylor vs. Gabe Silva for the MFB Light Heavyweight Title

Round 1: Taylor in gold and purple, Silva in black and silver. Taylor with a quick left. Silva trips Taylor to the mat who looks kind of shocked. Silva to the body. Taylor looking for his overhand to neutralize the range/height advantage. Doing well with it and getting inside. Silva with a combo. Taylor body/head.

10-9 Taylor

Round 2: Taylor doing a good job so far of making this a phone booth fight and trying to wear on the cleaner boxer in Silva. Taylor gets tossed to the ground again, which get Silva an admonishment from the ref. Silva with a body punch and a good left a few seconds later. Taylor looks like he’s getting a bit tired. Left hits the champ, as does a body shot.

10-9 Silva

Round 3: Taylor clips in a hook. Silva slips at the edge of the canvas. There’s a nice right by Taylor. Taylor swarms, but misses most. Now it’s back to Taylor punching and clutching. Right hand wobbles Silva and the ref steps in for a standing 8-count. Taylor avoids a shot by Silva and absolutely plants him with a huge right. Silva is back up, but looking shaky. Taylor tries to swarm and get the ending – he does! Ref waives it off and it’s over.

Final Result: Anthony Taylor defeats Gabriel Silva.
