Get in line “Borz”!

Khamzat Chimaev scored the biggest win of his career at UFC 308 yesterday (Sat., Oct. 26, 2024) when he tapped former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in the first round, breaking his jaw in the process from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE (watch highlights).

Chimaev locked up a title shot, right?

Well. a couple of hours after “Borz” decimated Whittaker, former UFC Middleweight champ Sean Strickland took to social media to say he’s still next in line.

“Understand one thing….I am next in line….. It’s been said, it’s been written… January/February me and Dricus Du Plessis are scrapping,” Strickland wrote on Twitter. Go back to Chechnya and wait a few months….. wait… sorry, UAE… you’re not allowed in Chechnya…But hey, crypto scams while you wait.”

Up until Chimaev’s incredible win at UFC 308, Strickland was still positioned to rematch Dricus Du Plessis next. However, that might be in question because UFC CEO Dana White was asked if Strickland was still next at the UFC 308 post-fight press conference (watch here), and even the boss is uncertain.

“It’s a good question. Call me on Tuesday,” White told reporters.

UFC is in a great position because it has two fighters who have a clear path to a title shot—Strickland had a very close fight with Du Plessis that many people believe he won, and Chimaev, who has been hyped since his debut, obliterated Whittaker without being touched.

The big problems surrounding Chimaev’s potential title shot are timing and location because he can’t fight in many countries (he says he can). If Du Plessis wants to fight in Australia again, “Borz” isn’t down ‘down under.’

Nevertheless, the next few months will be interesting for the 185 lb division.
