UFC CEO Dana White created the “BMF” belt to crown the Baddest Mother F—ker in UFC.
Jorge Masvidal secured the strap by stopping Nate Diaz at UFC 244, then White and Co. resurrected the title for Max Holloway at UFC 300 earlier this year in Las Vegas. There was even talk of having “Blessed” put his hardware on the line against Ilia Topuria at UFC 308.
Former UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, wants the BMF belt to stay retired.
‘’Why are we talking about this like this is a real title? It’s not. This was a hypothetical that was made up because of me,” Usman said on his Pound 4 Pound podcast. “Let’s not forget that myself and Covington were supposed to fight in MSG in New York. The fight didn’t happen. They needed a fight to headline that card. They needed something with some steam. It’s MSG. You can’t just put any fight card at MSG.”
White blamed Covington for bailing on the UFC 244 fight against Usman.
“So, at that point, what’s the hottest ticket out there? Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal,” Usman continued. “Of course, you have Nate Diaz. Dana jumps on … ‘How do we promote this fight? Let’s create this, alright, it’s called the Baddest Mother F—ker belt.’ Come on. Are you serious? That’s why it started.”
Topuria went on to finish Holloway at UFC 308.
Usman, 37, has not competed since losing to Khamzat Chimaev on short notice at UFC 294 roughly one year back in Abu Dhabi. Falling to “Borz” marked the third straight loss for “The Nigerian Nightmare,” who is unlikely to return until 2025 due to injuries.
