“The Funkmaster” is NOT a “Prelims” fighter!
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight roost-ruler, Aljamain Sterling, makes his second Featherweight appearance at UFC 310 next weekend (Sat., Dec. 7, 2024), taking on undefeated, top-ranked Movsar Evloev from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Currently, Sterling vs. Evloev is buried on UFC 310’s “Prelims” undercard (see it here), which is a little shocking because it has big stakes in the Featherweight division; meanwhile, there are two fights on the pay-per-view (PPV) main card (Kron Gracie vs. Bryce Mitchell and Nate Landwehr vs. Doo Ho Choi) with no real contender-type stakes.
Naturally, the former 135-pound champion is perplexed by his placement on the card, addressing the matter his own knock-off version of UFC Countdown.
“I didn’t know if I should have been insulted by the placement on the fight card or glass half-full,” Sterling siad. “I guess that’s the best way I try to look at everything in life. I get to fight earlier and get to be done earlier. I was a little confused by it, of course. I guess they have their rhyme or reason for what they do, the UFC brass, and it is what it is.
“At the end of the day, it’s not my organization,” Sterling added. “I don’t call the shots. I just go out there and compete, and it’s up to me to go out there and prove these guys wrong that I am a main card fighter. I think people are gonna be in for a very big surprise, and the UFC is gonna realize we messed up big time by not putting this on the main card.”
Remember: He’s dominant.
For what it’s worth, other than UFC 300’s legendary fight card earlier this year, Sterling has not competed on the “Prelims” since UFC 238 in 2019 (he defeated Pedro Munhoz).
Is his placement on the card because of this or because UFC CEO, Dana White, thought Evolev’s last fight against Arnold Allen was super dull?
UFC is definitely not the best at curating the idea fight card placements, and this silliness proves it again.
