Win = Loss?

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Top 15 ranked Flyweight Miranda Maverick scored a win (?) at UFC Tampa last weekend (Sat., Dec. 14, 2024) when she defeated Jamey-Lyn Horth via unanimous decision in a very forgettable, unimpressive fight from inside Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

After her win, Maverick hoped on social media to apologize for her performance and to say even though she won, she actually lost.

“I’m treating this win as a loss. It was one of my worst performances,” Maverick wrote. “I think 3 warnings about hitting to the back of the head is plenty to pull a point, but it is what it is. The second one knocked me for a loop, unfortunately, and I just did not perform at my best. I know I’m better than my performance tonight, though, as do my coaches and any true fans watching me. I apologize for not showing up my best, but we all have rough nights.”

“I stayed in the win column, and it’s time to get another big one,” Maverick concluded. “I would love to fight Jessica Andrade in April, and I know that’s a bit of a jump in this performance tonight. It did not look like I deserve that, but I’ve been working my way up steadily and continue to improve every single fight. A bad night does not define me.”

Unlike the ‘Sugar State Athletic Commission,’ which has overturned many losses into wins, the Maverick Commission has deemed her win a loss.

Maverick closed as the biggest betting favorite on UFC Tampa but did not look like a -1100 favorite at all. While a win is a win, no matter how anyone tries to look at it, her forgettable performance might harm her in the promotion’s eyes – meaning a big fight with former champion Andrade is going to be hard to get.

Nevertheless, “Fear The” Maverick is riding a four-fight win streak and went 3-0 in 2024.
