Dricus Du Plessis put his middleweight title on the line against former champion, Sean Strickland, atop the UFC 312 pay-per-view (PPV) event last night at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Du Plessis was looking to go up two-zip on Strickland after defeating “Tarzan” for the 185-pound strap at UFC 297 last year in Toronto.

Mission accomplished.

The 31 year-old Du Plessis improved to 23-2 with a unanimous decision victory over Strickland after five rounds of headlining action, a fight that had “Stillknocks” in control from bell-to-bell. Unfortunately, his performance did little to impress No. 3-ranked contender, Khamzat Chimaev, who slammed the “bullish*t” bout on social media.

Despite a recent surge from fast-rising French phenom Nassourdine Imavov, who sits one spot above Chimaev in the official middleweight rankings (see them here), the promotion is expected to book the undefeated “Borz” for the next 185-pound title shot. In addition, matchmakers are likely to encounter little resistance from the champion, who wanted to fight Chimaev over Strickland at UFC 312.

The challenger tagged “Stillknocks” on Twitter.

Chimaev, 30, improved to 14-0 by destroying former champion, Robert Whittaker, at the UFC 308 PPV last fall in Abu Dhabi. With his brand-new passport printed and ready for travel, it’s not unreasonable to think the promotion will have Du Plessis meet “Borz” at one of the big PPV cards this summer, perhaps even during International Fight Week.

Stay tuned.
