Eddie Alvarez back flip

Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (23-3) has his next opponent and will face Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire (10-3) this fall at Bellator 76.

News of the matchup was announced by Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney on Twitter (@BjornRebney).

@EdAlvarezFight vs. @PatrickyPitbull Fri October 12th at Caesars Windsor & live/free on MTV2 & http://Spike.com. This will be awesome.

Bellator 76 is scheduled to take place on October 12, 2012 at Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ontario with the event airing on MTV2 and streaming live at Spike.com.

Alvarez earned a win over Shinya Aoki last April at Bellator 66 in a rematch from their first meeting back in December 2008. The victory put Alvarez back into the win column after losing the Bellator lightweight title to Michael Chandler in the main event of Bellator 58. The loss ended a seven fight win streak which included capturing the inaugural Bellator title.

This bout will be the last match on Alvarez’s current Bellator contract.

Freire was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Season Six lightweight tournament, suffering a second round submission against Lloyd Woodard. It was the second tournament for ‘Pitbull’ who made it into the finals of the Season Four tourny only to lose to Chandler by decision at Bellator 44. In between those losses, Freire would finish Bellator newcomer Kurt Pellegrino via TKO at 0:50 of the first round at Bellator 59.
