Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

It appears that the UFC welterweight division is finally moving again.

With an(other) interim title reportedly in the final stages of negotiation between Colby “Scat” Covington and Rafael dos Anjos, Stephen Thompson is reportedly set, or all but set, to fight Darren Till in the UFC: Liverpool main event on May 27. Till had previously been announced as a headliner with the opponent To Be Decided.

Ariel Helwani, a journalist for MMA Fighting and host of the MMA Hour, confirmed that the fight is close but not totally finalized yet.

The choice of Thompson is a good one in terms of entertainment value, and a tough test for Till. Known for his karate base and striking ability, Thompsos came as close to the title as it is possible to get, going to a draw with Tyron Woodley back at UFC 205, then narrowly losing a controversial (and boring) majority decision in the rematch. Woodley has been the only recent opponent capable of forcing “Wonderboy” into a boring fight. He bounced back with a clean decision win over Jorge Masvidal in his last performance.

Till, meanwhile, burst onto the scene with a first round knockout over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. He is a massive welterweight, and showed excellent cage craft in that bout, cutting of the escape and forcing Cerrone to the fence. In the past, Till has been known to suffer from cardio issues later in bouts, an area where Thompson could potentially test him. Both fighters like to fight long, out of a somewhat similar hands-low stance, and it will be interesting to find out whether Thompson’s elusive distance management will be able to defuse Till’s pressure.

This presumably ends the hunt for the right opponent for Till. Is “Wonderboy” the right choice to face off against the 25-year old Scouser?

Ludwig Wants T.J. Vs Cruz 2 If ‘Mighty Mouse’ Escapes

It’s no secret T.J. Dillashaw and his camp want a fight against current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Demetrious Johnson to prove he is indeed the best mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter in the game today.

Talks, though, have cooled off a bit according to “Mighty Mouse” himself, who is still rehabbing from recent shoulder surgery. And though Duane Ludwig — T.J.’s head trainer — isn’t a part of the fight negotiations, he seems to think financial details are holding up the bout.

“[The] holdup is probably dates and money, I’m assuming,” Ludwig said on the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio via BJPenn.com.“I really don’t know what the hold up is, because I’m not in on those meetings and I don’t really want to be. I have focused my efforts on the actual martial arts aspect, of improving TJ and his martial arts in general. I’m teaching him and finding out, again, what actually works. But the business side, I try to let them figure that out on their own.”

Indeed, both parties have gone on record saying they want to get paid handsomely in order to make the fight. Whether or not UFC and Endeavor want to fork over the cash is another story.

Should the the fight not see the light of day, Ludwig would like to see his pupil get a rematch with former Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

“What’s Cruz’s situation, now?,” Ludwig queried on the show. “For me, personally, I would like to see that [rematch]. So Demetrious, and then – or – Cruz,” he concluded.

Dominick narrowly defeated Dillashaw via split decision back in 2016 to win back his 135-pound title. Cruz ultimately lost the strap to Cody Garbrandt, who ultimately coughed it up to T.J. at UFC 217 last November. And now we’ve come full circle, as the Dillashaw camp is keen on getting one back from “The Dominator.”

Longtime UFC analyst Joe Rogan is not a fan of MMA’s “win bonus” structure, and would rather it

One of the defining characteristics of the “modern era” of the UFC is a constant reevaluation of the pay structure in the promotion.

This is in large part due to the looming threat of unions/associations as well as the UFC’s own financial situations with big TV deals and the $4.2 billion sale of the promotion in 2016.

Throughout the UFC’s history, one goal for many fighters and their management was to land one of the rare contracts without a “win bonus” and with pay-per-view points. For example, during his peak, Chuck Liddell’s salary was not tied to getting his hand raised at the end of the night. He made the same $500k to defeat Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 he made when he lost to Rashad Evans at UFC 88.

The removal of the win bonus eliminates some variables outside the control of the fighter and places them in a more financially stable position where they can adequately plan their lives win or lose.

Speaking on his JRE MMA Show, longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan fired shots at the current practice of “win bonuses” for most fighters, originally designed to provide motivation to fight harder for the win.

“I just don’t like the win bonus,” Rogan said (transcript via MMAjunkie). “I don’t think anybody fights harder for it.”

“That to me is a real issue. I think a guy should be paid what they get paid. I think if you have a contract, that contract should be for ‘X’ amount of money. If you have points on the pay-per-view, that’s on top of that. But the idea that your win or loss has to be in the hands of what we have deemed completely incompetent judges.”

Referees, judges and the risk of fluke injuries costing you half of your income is a constant worry for fighters, and Rogan spoke to the fact athletic commissions refuse to hold their officials accountable, thus increasing the instability in the sport.

“I’ve heard (blowback) from Athletic Commissions, but I say, ‘Go (expletive) yourself,’” Rogan said. “You have guys who train for months and months and months and someone who literally doesn’t understand martial arts is giving these guys a decision, a loss or a win. That’s 50 percent of their money. That’s crazy.”

It’s unlikely the UFC would ever eliminate the practice without some sort of organization — official or not — by the fighters demanding a change.

And that means unpredictable pay in an unpredictable environment will continue.

The rising UFC star details his run in with a black bear while hiking near Lake Tahoe in California, in this latest animated video from Case Harts.

Back in February, in an interview with Australia’s Sub Radio, rising UFC lightweight star Sage Northcutt shared a harrowing story of action, adventure, and hiding behind things. Apparently, during one of his first trips to Sacramento to train with Team Alpha Male, Northcutt had an unforgettable experience with local wildlife.

While hiking alone near Lake Tahoe, ‘Super’ Sage encountered a wild black bear. Northcutt escaped danger by hiding behind a waterfall, but in his own words, “I felt like I was gonna get eaten.”

To hear the full story, check out the video above, animated by Case Harts.

Despite the scare, the 22-year-old ended up sticking with TAM as his home base camp, and is currently 2-0 for 2017-18. Northcutt is most recently coming off a unanimous decision win over Thibault Gouti at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Medeiros. Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow for more news, updates, and of course cartoons.
