Shigeki Osawa and Katsuya Toida’s bout at Sengoku Raiden Championship 13 held on June 20 was officially changed on Wednesday from a DQ win for Osawa to a no contest.

Toida protested his disqualification with the Sengoku commission and after getting the fighter’s and official’s statements and reviewing footage it was too difficult to decisively determine whether the fight-ending knee was illegal or legal and so the bout was ruled a no contest. Osawa took two clear low blows in the second round which seemed to cripple the wrestler but the final match-ending blow in the third round was certainly questionable.

A rematch is planned for SRC 14 which is to be held on Aug. 22 but no bout agreement has been signed yet.

When K-1 and DREAM promoter FEG announced the potential $230 million partnership with PUJI Capital and laid out a plan for global domination Sengoku Director Taro Mukai responded, “We’ll always take the slow and steady route.”

“Slow and steady” may be good words to use to describe the growth of World Victory Road’s Sengoku Raiden Championship up until this point. Attendance numbers are solid but not great, some interesting talent has come in and some has left, the quality of the event is getting better and they have slowly become a profitable venture.

That is what the public see though. First under the direction of Takahiro Kokuho and now under Mukai, Sengoku and has been signing some of the biggest prospects in Japan, creating a development program, building gyms, holding tournaments and setting up the potential for growth that is anything but “slow and steady”.

While Tsuchiya and Okazaki were able put on solid but not dominating performances to secure decisions and defend their belts, Rambaa “M-1” Somdet was actually losing the first round of his bout with Hiroyuki Abe until the challenger caught a shot in the eye which caused it to swell completely shut, ending the bout.

DREAM and K-1 promoter FEG announced Friday that it is entering a partnership with Shanghai-based investment bank PUJI Capital that could be worth 20 billion yen ($230 million).

K-1 President Sadaharu Tanikawa stressed that FEG had not been sold and in fact it will now be setting its sights much higher.

“This is a declaration of war against the WWE and UFC. From Asia, we will take the world,” Tanikawa stated.

Tanikawa admitted that expansion to American soil would be futile at this stage and under the watchful eye of K-1 creator Kazuyoshi Ishii, they will set their sights on the rest of the world.

“Mr. Ishii is completely supporting us. We won’t stand a chance in the American market so we will spread to the rest of the world.”

Who Needs the Heavier Weights? Not Japan

Event Producer Keiichi Sasahara made an announcement that will have a profoundly positive long term effect on Japanese MMA after DREAM.15. In 2011, both DREAM and Sengoku will have bantamweight and proper featherweight weight classes. Finally Japan’s deepest divisions will be given a chance to shine on the country’s grandest stages.

But let’s take this further. What if DREAM and Sengoku abolished the heavier weight divisions?

The heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions have no depth and longevity in Japan. There is little local talent at those weight divisions and the majority of Japanese fighters who do fight in the heavier weight classes should probably fighting in lighter. So does Japanese MMA need heavyweights?
