Morning Report: With Nate Diaz out, Khabib Nurmagomedov waits for a lightweight to answer Dana White’s challenge

After a wild weekend or back and forth between UFC brass and a number of lightweights, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dance card remains empty. The undefeated Dagestani standout has been getting a bit antsy about finding his next opponent, openly mocking some of the division’s elite. Things came to a head Saturday when UFC president Dana White tweeted that Nate Diaz had turned down a potential scrap with Nurmagomedov.

@EDLEZGIN @TeamKhabib Nate turned the fight down

— Dana White (@danawhite) January 11, 2014

Diaz, who quickly responded on Twitter himself, claimed that wasn’t the case.

@danawhite @ufc are full of shit I didn’t turn down anything …

— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) January 12, 2014

Nurmagomedov issued the challenge again, but was met with no response.

@NateDiaz209 @danawhite @ufc @arielhelwani If you not scared, let’s fight!!👊

— khabib nurmagomedov (@TeamKhabib) January 12, 2014

Who would have thought 2 years ago that the President would be the best organization in the world to… http://t.co/fjB9sdrVLq

— khabib nurmagomedov (@TeamKhabib) January 12, 2014

Enter Diaz’ manager, Mike Kogan. On Sunday, Kogan admitted that while the fight was offered, the promotion refused certain conditions, effectively pumping the brakes on talks. “Nate has never turned down a fight against anyone,” Kogan told MMA Mania. “There are conditions that we asked for that were turned down by the UFC, so the fight didn’t happen.”

Elaborating on the issue to FOX Sports, Kogan explains where exactly the UFC wasn’t willing to budge:

“We asked for Nate’s contract to be redone. The UFC turned it down. We asked for a change to his contract, and changes to when the fight takes place. They said no and we said no thanks. This is supposed to be a professional sport, but then this resorts to these Twitter wars. This isn’t a street fight, it’s a professional sport. If it’s a street fight and they want to see who the better man is they know where the fuck Nate is, and then we can see who is the better man.”

Knowing an opportunity when he sees it, Michael Johnson joined the fray Sunday.

Well @danawhite if @NateDiaz209 don’t wanna scrap with me I think the people want me & @TeamKhabib @ufc

— Michael Johnson (@FollowTheMenace) January 12, 2014

Johnson had been campaigning to face Diaz, but told MMA Fighting he’s after anyone ahead of him in the divisional standings. With back-to-back wins over Gleison Tibau and Joe Lauzon, a win over Nurmagomedov (currently ranked No. 7) would undoubtedly push Johnson (No. 13) into the division’s top ten. To his credit, Jamie Varner also threw his name in the ring, but after dropping two of his last three and a tough short-notice fight with Abel Trujillo coming up at UFC 169 you would have to imagine it being a tough sell to Nurmagomedov and UFC brass, alike.

Nurmagomedov was originally slated to face perennial contender Gilbert Melendez at UFC 170 until White officially put the kibosh on it Jan. 3. According to Melendez’ training parter Jake Shields, it’s a fight ‘El Nino’ still wants down the line, but that nothing was ever agreed to before being prematurely announced late last December.

The Hierarchy of MMA – Revised and Expanded!

Recently WSOF match-maker Ali Abdel-Aziz threw down the gauntlet with Bellator in a proposed PPV event matching up stars from respective organizations. It certainly started a lot of debate concerning which promotion is number two behind the UFC and how close these trailing promotions are when it comes to roster talent.

I decided it was time to add some statistics to the debate so that we have some sort of factual information to gain insight into just how the top market share of fighters is divided up, rather than pure speculative opinion. We must all understand that most rankings are subjective anyway, so the weight of this information should be scrutinized and I accept that this is no way definitive.

Morning Report: UFC and Matt Brown release statements on controversial comments, Sara McMann chimes in

Well, it’s been a rough past day or so for UFC welterweight Matt Brown. Following his now infamous comments on women’s MMA, Brown and the UFC have released statements on the matter. Per FOX Sports:

“Matt Brown has apologized for the comments made on his podcast, and we have addressed the matter with him. His comments don’t reflect the views of the UFC. There’s no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. The UFC is built on principles of respect, and any statements to the contrary are not acceptable.”

“I have spoken with the UFC about the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and what is required and expected of me as a professional athlete under the terms of my promotion agreement,” Brown said. “The UFC has a policy of inclusion and respect for all people and I understand the importance of being more aware of my actions and words.”

Given the UFC’s investment in women’s MMA, it’s not surprising Brown’s statements weren’t appreciated. To have a notable employee/contractor not promote, but rather discourage fans from enjoying your product, while also offending people, is likely not ideal for the UFC. Brown has also taken down the podcast where he made his comments.

Among several fighters who commented on the situation, women’s bantamweight No. 1 contender Sara McMann turned the tables on Brown with some suggestions of her own.

“I want to make it absolutely clear … I do not care if somebody wants to be a fan or not,” McMann said Thursday. “Don’t pay $60 then. Nobody’s taking their top off. I don’t even know him. Why would I give a crap what he thinks about my fight? You know what, Matt Brown fight in a Speedo.”

While we’re left to hold our breath for topless cage fighting, we have, unfortunately, gone down the Speedo path before. No need to revisit that unpleasantness.

BACK TO THE FUTURE?

2013 was an incredible year for mixed martial arts and with interest in the sport gathering pace, coupled with some astonishing advancements in technology, this has all the makings of taking the sport onto that all important next level. I’m not professing to be Nostradamus, (or should that be NostradaMMAs), but I feel this year will have some interesting developments for the MMA enthusiast. Here are my predictions for what will be a game changing 2014.

The Rise of the MMA App:

Whilst apps and their use have been around for what seems like an age, never before has their creation and affordability been so easily within the grasp of MMA media outlets. Just a cursory glance at #WHOATV’s website analytics reveals the devices used to access news, views and interviews are predominantly mobiles. I imagine this is also the case for media outlets with a similar focus. Given the fickleness of the MMA consumer, it’s not exactly rocket science to suggest that in order to retain interest from the viewing public and add value to the news gathering experience, outlets will undoubtably look to craft a user experience that best reflects where their content is being observed. The killer addition to the app will be the clever use of it’s ‘push technology’ that will enable those with the feature enabled on their app to react even faster than they do at present to breaking and emerging stories in MMA.

Morning Report: Urijah Faber wishing Dominick Cruz a speedy recovery ahead of war with Renan Barão

With the unfortunate news of yet another injury setback to now former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, the UFC has turned to 2013 ‘Fighter of the Year’ candidate Urijah Faber to save the day.

Four times a winner in 2013, Faber had a career year while his chief rival licked his wounds on the sidelines. Just when things looked to be turning the corner for Cruz, a headlining Pay-Per-View title bout only weeks away, fate offered another cruel setback. As if a new injury wasn’t enough, Cruz’ title reign was finally taken off life support, officially crowning Renan Barão as the division’s true champion. What’s more, Cruz has been removed from the promotion’s divisional rankings all together. Not even Faber would wish that run of luck on him.

“I feel for the guy,” Faber said of Cruz to FOX Sports. “We don’t really like each other, but we’ve had some communication throughout the years and I’ve talked to him about this and we still want to fight each other. There’s no doubt, the guy’s too stubborn not to get back on the horse and heal up eventually. I’ll be cheering for him to heal up so I can punch him again.”

As for the matter at hand, Faber isn’t letting the past damper his plans for fighting Barão on short notice. The pair first met for the interim bantamweight title back in Jul. 2012, Barão walking away with the strap and a unanimous decision.

Was Anderson Silva really THAT great?

Silva’s reign came to a shocking halt last week, and we may never see him in the octagon again. He is, in many fan’s minds, considered the GOAT. I have a certain amount of respect for what he’s done in his career, but was he really that great? I mean, the level of competition that he’s faced is not even near what other champions faced in more competitive divisions. Look at how stacked the competition is at HW LWH and WW. We get juicy match ups every single time. From the list of fighters that Jon Jones has faced, and the fights for Cain Velasquez. But who has Silva faced that is really that great? I’d say the only one that’s respectable on that list is Dan Henderson. VItor? But that was pre TRT, and pretty boy Rich Franklin wasn’t exactly scaring anyone. Chael Sonnen? Really? Why was he fighting AS or Bone Jones in the first place? Only the MMA gods know that one.

“I think it was a really close fight the last time and barring a few punches and kicks here and there it was an uneventful fight. I’m going to make this fight eventful, I’m going to make it exciting, I’m going to let it all hang out and I know he’s going to do the same,” Faber said. “I’m just going to be a whole different fighter and he’s going to have to be because I’m going to be bringing it.”

Morning Report: Chris Weidman and Ray Longo question fairness of Vitor Belfort’s testosterone replacement therapy

Vitor Belfort’s noted detractors have now grown to include his next opponent. UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, along with his chief striking coach and trainer Ray Longo, have begun opening up on their stance toward’s Belfort’s use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) leading up to a title bout this spring. Belfort, who has been undergoing TRT since his 2011 bout with Anderson Silva, has previously been issued a therapeutic-use exemption (TUE) allowing him to continue competing while undergoing treatment.

“I know Chris is beating the guy but why give him an advantage?” Longo told ESPN. “Why does he deserve that? All he did was abuse his body with steroids so that now he needs the exemption. It’s bull****.”

Belfort’s past transgressions now come into play. Having tested positive in 2006 for 4-hydroxytestosterone while competing in Nevada, Belfort would be forced to lobby for the TUE with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) before being licensed. The governing body has a policy of not allowing a TUE for TRT if that individual’s needs derive from past non-sanctioned use. According to Weidman, Belfort’s continued TRT creates an unlevel playing field. (via FOX Sports)

“He’s failed a drug test before. He’s on TRT now. I don’t agree with TRT to begin with, so him failing a drug test and being on TRT, I don’t really like it,” he said. “So I appreciate there will be a commission making sure he’s doing things right. I don’t have high testosterone at all. I’m completely fine. I guarantee his testosterone on TRT is two or three times higher than mine. I wake up and I work hard two or three times a day. I don’t feel that there’s a need for it, and if it comes to point where you need it, then you retire, you don’t fight. Fighting is a sport where strength is important, and if you’re going to have extra testosterone, especially after you’ve been caught cheating, it’s unfair.”

Depending on Weidman’s health, the title bout with Belfort is tentatively slotted for Las Vegas, Nevada in May or July, possibly coinciding with the UFC’s Fourth of July weekend. As the promotion historically books large Vegas events (UFC 100, UFC 148, UFC 162) for the holiday, Weidman vs. Belfort would seem to fit the bill.

Lessons Learned and Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night 34

There were certainly some disappointing fights as one fight ended via DQ before the first round even ended and there was a major stinker on the undercard. But considering how well the main event went, I don’t think the UFC was disappointed in how their first card strictly available on the new UFC Fight Pass went.

Tarec Saffiedine and Hyun Gyu Lim both laid it out on the line and gave the fans everything they can ask for. Even though it went all 25 minutes, there were plenty of close stoppages and even a premature celebration from Saffiedine. It was clear that Saffiedine was going to walk out the winner, but Lim pushed himself further than he has before and is bound to grow from the fight as well. Throw in the fact that long time Japanese legend Tatsuya Kawajiri had a successful debut by stoppage which means everything that really mattered went well for the UFC.

“I have not talked about it yet,” says Silva. “It is the first time I’m commenting on this. This is one of the things that we change. Our team had a lot of people with different thoughts. Although it was not the reason why I lost, from that we analyzed what was good and what was bad, so we decided to change it.”

Chided by fans following the loss of his title to Weidman, Silva says the rare defeat only helped push his development further.

“I am the one who goes out there to fight. I am the one who trains four, five months. I am the one who is far from my family. So, people can say whatever they want. It is a matter of opinion. I’ve always been motivated because I love what I do. Everything that happened was important to my improvement as an athlete and as a person.”

With news that boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. has resumed training to face him after scoring a win Saturday night in Moscow, Silva says the exhibition bout with Jones is the only thing left for him to achieve.

“My fight with Roy Jones Jr. Regardless if I’m going to win or lose, to be happier professionally as an athlete. This is something that I want to achieve. I don’t know If I’ll be able to fight 12 rounds because it’s a completely different sport from MMA. However, I’ve been for this for some time.”

I’m off for Wednesday and Thursday, but back for Friday. Happy Holidays.

A Skeptic’s Perspective On The Silva vs. Weidman Rematch

Ari Shaffir is a stand-up comedian and avid MMA fan. Through his friendship with UFC commentator and fellow comic, Joe Rogan, he has been afforded opportunities that very few people, outside of those directly associated with the UFC, will ever have. He has been watching the sport closely for a number of years and believes, like so many others around the world, that Anderson Silva is the undisputed greatest of all time.

In an episode of his podcast, entitled Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank, Ari recalled the first time he saw Anderson fight.

“He was fighting Chris Leben somewhere in Las Vegas. All I remember is people talking about Chris Leben and how hard he hit. Anderson Silva came in and walloped this guy.”

Morning Report: Ronda Rousey expects Nick Diaz to abandon retirement and return to fighting

Ahead of her UFC 168 co-main event clash with Miesha Tate, women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was asked by FOX Sports Live host Charissa Thompson why she believed Nick Diaz, her friend and former welterweight contender, had turned down a fight with Carlos Condit. UFC president Dana White told media he had offered Diaz the bout in person at UFC on FOX 9 in Sacramento, but that Diaz wasn’t interested. Diaz previously dropped a controversial decision to Condit at UFC 143 in a bout for the interim welterweight championship.

“Nick’s been fighting for a really really long time,” said Rousey. “I’ve only been fighting for three years, I mean, he’s been fighting I think for over a decade now. This sport puts a lot of miles on you very quickly. If he feels like he needs a rest and to take a break, you can’t fight for anyone other than yourself. You can’t fight sooner than you feel like you should. It really is a life and death situation out there and you have to do it when you feel it’s right.”

Asked directly if she believed Diaz would return to fighting, Rousey’s smirk removed all doubt. “Yea. I think he will.”

The face of women’s MMA, Rousey was also asked her take on the UFC’s incoming strawweight division.

“I love the 115 pound chicks that are coming in,” gushed Rousey. “They’re so talented. They’re so charismatic. They’re so cute. They’re almost adorably trying to kill each other. It’s like cute, yet scary. It just brings so many emotions out of you. I think the fans are really going to embrace it and I can’t wait for there to be another women’s champion. Now it’s really been proven the UFC is moving past that ‘experimental phase’ for the girls. They’re really investing and seeing people love it.”

With the division set to crown its inaugural champ via the Ultimate Fighter tournament due to film in May, Rousey is pulling for Mrs. Pat Barry.

“Who’s the best? I don’t know, but I’m the biggest fan of Rose Namajunas. I love her. Just her personality and the way she fights. I’ll be rooting for her I think to win it.”
