Morning Report: Firas Zahabi says ‘it’s 50/50’ whether or not Georges St-Pierre returns to MMA

Speaking with media in Toronto last week, Tristar head trainer Firas Zahabi sounded less optimistic about the return of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

“I don’t know. It’s 50/50 and I don’t think [St-Pierre] knows either,” Zahabi tells Sportsnet. “I think if he ends it this way, it was good. He ended up with Fight of the Night. An incredible seesaw battle. He showed heart, he showed guts, he showed he’s a fighter.”

In arguably the toughest test of his UFC career, St-Pierre narrowly won a five-round decision many fans and pundits had awarded the challenger, Johny Hendricks. Following the controversial scoring, UFC president Dana White believed St-Pierre won only one of the five championship rounds.

“I was most surprised [White] saw a landslide,” says Zahabi in a second interview. “I didn’t see a landslide. Nobody saw a landslide. You look at the polls on the internet, 10% more people gave the fight to Georges than to Johny. There’s a lot of opinions out there. Dana White, I respect him a lot, is one opinion. It definitely wasn’t a blowout, as he said.”

“It’s one man’s opinion. It’s an important opinion, but for me, I’m very comfortable to say Georges won that fight.”

Reenforcing talk of his fighter being burned out by the grind, Zahabi says he’s only interested in a rematch with Hendricks if St-Pierre is.

“He has 22 fights in the UFC, alone. That’s a lot of training camps. That’s a lot of years of sacrifice. He can’t go out. He can’t do this [or that]. He can’t have a wife and kids. He can’t have a steady girlfriend. He can’t have anything normal in his life. He’s living a very unbalanced life. How long does he want to do that for? He’s 32. When is he going to start living his life? At 40? It’s a hard decision for him to make and he’s got a lot of things going on in his life. He has to decide what he wants to do. Nobody can decide for him.”

To Zahabi, it’s not a matter of St-Pierre’s ability, but whether or not he still has the drive to compete at the highest level.

“I tell him, it’s about motivation. Do you have the motivation to do this again? If yes, and you want to put your life on the back burner and do another camp, lets do it. If you don’t have the motivation to do it, don’t do it. You’re just going to go out there and get hurt. You’re going to cut corners and be miserable and you’re going to go out there and you’re going to get hurt.”

Instead of a long write up for each fight, I’m just gonna say a few words for each fight. But, don’ t get me wrong, this card is absolutely worth your money and time ESPECIALLY if you’re one of the people that buys most UFC cards… this is the best of the best of Women’s MMA, I compare Invicta events to the FOXSPORTS1 debut card, where UFC stacked it from top to bottom. This is the least amount of fights Invicta’s had for an event, but I think 13 fights on a card was unrealistic. I’m perfectly fine if this is just an anomaly, though. Plus, it’s a great chance to check out some of the TOP strawweights that you’ll be seeing in the UFC next yeat.

Morning Report: Michael Bisping believes Tim Kennedy is beneath him, but happy to pick up easy payday

Still intent on someday holding UFC gold, perennial middleweight contender Michael Bisping says he’s willing to step back from the title hunt to resolve personal business with Tim Kennedy. On the mend rehabbing an injured eye, Bisping tells Bloody Elbow he’s happy to oblige Kennedy’s attempt at garnering attention.

Tim Kennedy is beneath me as a fighter 100%, but if you make enough noise about it, eventually, I’m going to have to shut him up. Now, he’s getting his own way, even though he’s not somebody I would choose to fight at this point in my career.

I want to punch him in the face so bad that I’m going to do it in the Octagon professionally, and if you look at the trend of these people calling me out, it never really ends well for them. Tim Kennedy, if you’ve got a set of balls, call Dana White and ask for the fight, and I’ll see you in the Octagon. Then you can shut the f*ck up, once and for all. How about that Bloody Elbow? Put that one in your pipe and smoke it! [Laughs heartily]

Bisping admits fighting Kennedy may not be the best choice for his career, but that it’s still a win win.

I want to fight for the title in 2014. That’s my real focus, but Tim Kennedy has been going on so much that I’ll put that off to one side. That guy has been at it non-stop, and enough is enough. Either I whip his ass in the Octagon, or I’ll end up having to be held responsible for my actions if I see him in the street. Fighting and beating Tim Kennedy isn’t going to get me closer to a title shot, but on the flip side, since I’m currently taking some time to rehab my eye, it will be a nice little comeback match, because I really do believe I can beat Tim Kennedy while standing on my head. I’ll still train accordingly, pick up a nice payday…it’s a win-win.

Currently ranked the UFC’s No. 4 middleweight, Bisping hasn’t competed since April’s UFC 159 but plans to return in March 2014. Kennedy, ranked No. 10, recently improved to 2-0 in the UFC with a highlight reel knockout of Rafael Natal at UFC: Fight for the Troops 3 earlier this month.

The Enormous Potential of the UFC Women’s Strawweight Division – Lengthy and Deep Analysis

If you haven’t heard yet, Dana White has stated that the UFC is looking into creating the women’s strawweight (115lbs) division in 2014.

This is gigantic news for WMMA, and just one of the signs, that WMMA is gaining ground, and quick. Only about two years ago, did all-female promotion, Invicta FC, come in on the backs of the strong leadership from Shannon Knapp, and put on there first event. Fast forward to today, and it’s great to see the UFC recognizes the talent available at 115lbs.

So what does this mean for Invicta and it’s surrounding weight classes?

Well, as we saw with UFC’s 135lbs inclusion, girls from 145 and and 125 moved down and up to fight in the UFC. Germaine de randamie, Jessica Andrade, Rosi Sexton among others.

As for invicta Shannon released this statement, which was essentially saying they have a great working relationship with the UFC and will continue to put on events and strawweight fights.

Check out the rest of the post here.

Morning Report: Jon Jones wants superfight with Cain Velasquez, plans permanent heavyweight move within two years

While fans have long campaigned to see him face former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in some capacity, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones seems to be moving in another direction. Answering fan questions at an event in Toronto, Jones opened up on plans for moving to heavyweight and eventually facing champion Cain Velasquez.

“Yea, definitely. I think that’s going to happen within the next two years,” says Jones. “I’ll go up to heavyweight, permanently. But I am looking to take a superfight sooner or later, within the next year. I’m excited for it. I’ve been really thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it. I think it’d be huge for the sport. He’s definitely the toughest guy in the division and he’s not that big so I think it’d be a really entertaining fight. Don’t be surprised if you see that sooner or later.”

Currently walking around at about 230 pounds, Jones says he’s not far off the mark from making the move. “I would gain about 10 pounds of muscle and compete with him [Velasquez] around 240lbs.”

At 6’4, Jones already enjoys a sizable reach advantage at 84.5 inches compared to Velasquez at 77 inches standing 6’1. Measurables aren’t everything, but we all know how much size matters to the UFC.

Bellator 109 Prelims: Three Prospects Shine

The Bellator 109 Prelims showcased three impressive prospects catching three stoppage victories in. Bubba Jenkins, Goiti Yamauchi and Blagoi Ivanov are relevant mma fighters in their respective weight divisions.

First, Bubba Jenkins showed that he improved his cardio. The commentators believed this to be the reason he has one loss on his record to Bubba LaRue. Against Ian Rammel, Jenkins was able to display his NCAA Division One Champion pedigree in a workman like victory. Jenkins used double leg takedowns, often with slams, to ground Rammel. He then went on to pound out Rammel in the third round. Now that Jenkins has addressed his cardio and pacing, it will be interesting where his next fight is. Hopefully, Bellator will put him in the lightweight tournament.

Goiti Yamauchi was seven pounds overweight for his clash with Saul Almeida. Normally a grappling whiz, Yamauchi was able to show off some precise, strong striking that sent Almeida crashing to the canvas in the first round. Earlier in the fight, Yamauchi showed off a thai clinch and knees that looked like they were straight out of Yamauchi’s hometown of Curitiba. It was like Wanderlei Silva when he trained at Chute Box. At a young twnety years old, Yamauchi now holds a 16-1 record and could be lined up in the Bellator featherweight tournament in the future.

Morning Report: Johny Hendricks firm in belief he beat Georges St-Pierre at UFC 167, says injured knee not an issue

It should come as no surprise that Johny Hendricks‘ feelings regarding his UFC 167 bout with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre haven’t changed since Saturday. Steadfast in his belief he was wronged by three misguided judges in Nevada, Hendricks still feels he dominated the match from word go. Speaking with Chael Sonnen on UFC Tonight, Hendricks disagrees with the idea he won the fight, but lost the game.

“No, I have not re-watched the fight, but I know you’re wrong, Chael,” says Hendricks. “I out-struck him. I out-jabbed him. I landed combinations. He couldn’t take me down. He took me down once in the first 10 seconds, who cares. I made the correction. He couldn’t take me down no more. I took him down. I was able to hold him down, do ground and pound. He looked like he got hit with a sledgehammer multiple times in the face and I had a little bruise.

I pretty much won the fight everywhere it could go and it just didn’t go on the scorecards. I felt like I had won [rounds] one, two and four, guaranteed. Those were my strong rounds. I give him three and five just because, just because he’s the champ. Even in the fifth round, I thought I did enough to win it. Realistically, I give myself four to one. That’s all I’m going to give to Georges St-Pierre. Next time, I don’t plan on giving any to him.”

With fans and pundits calling round one the deciding factor, Hendricks says even the most contested stanza should not have weighed as heavy.

“Yea, it’s a fight. Any round can be argued. You’re going against the champ. I clearly won those. He took me down in the first 10 seconds, he rode me out for what? 10 seconds? I got back to my feet and then at that point I took over the fight. It was mine from there on. I’m not going to concede to the first round. That was probably the closest round he could have gotten, but yea, I thought I definitely won that fight.”

Being informed that a FOX poll revealed 71% of the U.S. believed he won the bout, Hendricks doesn’t believe the controversy is taking away from an incredible fight.

“He fought a good fight, I just fought a better one. The country knows that. The fans are right on this one. Then again, everybody’s human. The judges are human. They might have seen it that way but I’m glad that the fans are on my side.”

Despite the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s medical report barring Hendricks from fighting until May 2014 without clearance from an orthopedist, he sounds well enough to begin training again shortly.

“I played golf [Wednesday]. My knee is fine. I tell the Nevada state commission, if anything is wrong with me, I’m going to tell them. Because, wrestlers, sometime’s we’re too tough for our own good. So I told them about my knee because I knew it would make me get it checked out.”

FANPOST OF THE DAY

Today’s Fanpost of the Day comes via 1vinny1.

UFC 167 GSP vs Hendricks Commentating wasn’t impartial

To start with I through Hendricks won the fight.

However after watching the fight again with and without sound, with sound I got Hendricks winning rounds 1, 2, 4 without I got rounds 1, 3, 5 for GsP so it comes down to round 1. If you watch it with sound all you hear is Rogan and Goldberg say that’s a hard knee or a hard elbow whenever Hendricks does either which gives the viewer the impression that he is doing more damage than GsP.

If you watch the 1st round without sound you got Gsp with a takedown then the submission attempt, you got a large amount of the round with both fighters pressuring each other for control which i would give it even you got Hendricks landing 5 good elbows to Gsp while been pressed against the cage, you got Hendricks with a takedown which he didn’t do much with besides one elbow then you got Gsp using kicks and jabs to keep the distance followed by a bit more pressuring for control with a couple knees by both fighters then you got Hendricks going for knockout with some haymakers however not landing anything major and Gsp landing 2 head kicks one of which was blocked and then it ending with Gsp using his jab and kicks to keep the distance and Hendricks landing a couple leg kicks and still going for the big shot but not landing.

So it comes down to the commentating with sound Hendricks without GSP, it sounds stupid pun intended but that’s what it came down to.

10 seconds? Morning Report: Georges St-Pierre tells trainer Freddie Roach he won’t fight again without him in his corner

It’s been a busy past few days for renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach. In addition to scuffling with Brandon Rios’ team ahead of their Pay-Per-View bout with Manny Pacquiao Saturday night, Roach may be a major player if and when UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre returns against Johny Hendricks.

According to Yahoo Sports, Roach received a text from St-Pierre stating he won’t return to fighting without him in his corner on fight night. St-Pierre began working with Roach in May 2010 in preparation of his title defense against Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, but Roach has never served as a cornerman for a UFC bout. Roach is said to have devised the striking gameplan St-Pierre used in his most recent bout with Hendricks at UFC 167, which included extensive use of the jab and a slight tweak for throwing the left hook.

“This guy [Hendricks], he doesn’t know anything, he just punches good with a big left hand,” Roach said. “Pretty much with him, if you can stay away from that and nullify that, it’s not that tough of a fight. Georges did it, and he had success with it when he did, but he didn’t do it enough in the fight.”

Schedule permitting, Roach says he’ll be in St-Pierre’s corner the next time he steps inside the Octagon.

Conor McGregor talks about returning to training, mentality of fighting, Christmas plans

UFC featherweight Conor McGregor (14-2) might be on the shelf with a knee injury, but that doesn’t mean he’s not out there making his presence known. McGregor recently received an honorary lifetime membership from the Commerce & Economics Society at the University College of Dublin in Ireland, and Fergus O’Farrell of Fight Hounds was on hand to get an interview with him.

The Irish fighter discusses how his knee injury is healing (he even offers up a demonstration), how much he wants to return to training, the mentality of fighting and how he doesn’t take anything personally, and a big Christmas trip he has lined up. McGregor should be ready to return to the octagon around the middle of 2014, depending on how the knee rehab goes.
