UFC 199 Aftermath: And the Meek Shall Inherit the Earth…

(“Ehh budday, do you like apples?” (*holds tongue*) “Well go f*ck yourself, apple.” via Getty.)

“If…you believe the son of God came down to earth 2,000 years ago, and he killed himself for our sins, and he can walk on water…if you can believe that, then you can believe that I can knock the f–k out of Luke Rockhold two weeks from Saturday.”

When Michael Bisping first uttered these words to Luke Thomas after being called up on two weeks notice to face rival Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, they actually made a lot of sense. Surely, we were just as likely to see a man walk on water as we were to see Michael Bisping defeat a man who had absolutely obliterated him less than two years ago in their first meeting. And until very recently, I’d sooner commit the ultimate sin than see Bisping, a man whose assholery we have mocked for years, claim the middleweight title from anyone.

And yet, he did, and we’re honestly kind of stoked for him right now.

And until very recently, I’d sooner commit the ultimate sin than see Bisping, a man whose assholery we have mocked for years, claim the middleweight title from anyone.

The thing is, Bisping kind of won us over with in those two weeks leading up to last weekend’s event, as we’re sure he did many of you. His penchant for pre-pubescent insults accompanied by and/or preceding finger pointing worked in his favor against an arrogant dullard like Rockhold and, dare we say it, helped paint him as a cheeky and borderline likable underdog headed into the biggest fight of his storied career (and then reminded us of why we disliked him in the first place immediately thereafter).

But credit where credit is due, Bisping might actually have learned something from theass-whipping he suffered at the hands of Rockhold. Something beyond “immediately apologize after yelling faggot at a press conference,” we mean. He went on a three fight win streak after it, the longest of his career since 2011, and somehow managed to legitimately defeat Anderson Silva despite being knocked out by Anderson Silva. And at UFC 199, he not only turned the tables on Rockhold, but put a worse beating on him than Vitor Belfort on TRT did en route to becoming the first Brit to ever hold UFC gold.

Michael Bisping.

Is the middleweight champion.

I swear, that doesn’t look right no matter how many times I carve it into my leg.

Think Michael Bisping winning a title was the craziest thing that happened at UFC 199? THINK AGAIN, because in addition to a pair of insane fights being announced at the event, Dan Henderson done killed Hector Lombard with the most insane finish of his career: a head kick, followed by what can only be described as a “mosh pit elbow.” Just check out the violence in those fight-ending shots. I know I should probably be admonishing Hendo for being so willing to inflict heinous damage on a clearly unconscious opponent, but damn no those elbows were just bleed tap or snap FACE THE PAIN NO ESCAPE CANYOUSTEPTOTHIS awesome.

If Henderson’s post-fight press conference appearance is to be believed, it looks like we may very well have seen the last of the 45-year old that killed Fedor. I’d prefer to see him KO Bisping for the title and then retire, but so be it. At least he’ll be going out in the most Dan Henderson fashion possible (which is getting your ass kicked, then kicking the other guy’s ass worse BTW).

What else? Oh right, Dominick Cruz defeated Urijah Faber by unanimous decision, thanks in part to his superior movement and unpunchability. The two continued to do verbal at the post-fight press conference. Water wet.

Speaking of things that we take for granted, Max Holloway won another fight. His ninth in a row, actually, over quite possibly his toughest test yet in former title challenger Ricardo Lamas. The final exchange of the fight was some of the most badass, baller sh*t we have seen ssince Lawler vs. MacDonald. Give this man a shot once your featherweight champion is done running the show.

BREAKING: Brock Lesnar Returns, Faces MARK F*CKING HUNT at UFC 200

Dana White Fertittas Brock Lesnar Lorenzo Frank III MMA photos funny
(That moment when you realize you just agreed to fight the face-punchiest fighter on the planet, but don’t like to get punched in the face.)

We’ll have our full recap of UFC 199 up shortly, but before we do, let’s get right into a few of the biggest non-fight highlights of the night. Firstly, it was announced on Saturday that, after a fake retirement, a cancelled fight, and a series of brutal negotiations, the welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor will be going down for realsies at UFC 202 in August. Apparently all Diaz needed to make the fight happen was to literally smack The Baldfather like a bitch, which to Dana’s credit, he agreed to.

Easily more shocking than the announcement of McGregor-Diaz II, however, was the reveal that former WWE superstar-turned-UFC-heavyweight-champion-turned-current-WWE-superstar Brock Lesnar would be making his return to the UFC at UFC 200, 100 events after he first defended his title against Frank Mir in brutal fashion, to take on a TBD opponent.

This morning, Lesnar appeared on Sportscenter to announce who exactly that opponent would be, and if you have the type of incredibly specific dyslexia that prevents you from reading headlines, then head below to get the scoop.

Yes, you heard the correctly. Lesnar will be returning to the cage for the first time since 2011 to take on none other than heavyweight legend and walking pair of murderfists Mark Hunt, the #8 ranked heavvyeweight who has rattled off back-to-back KO victories over Antonio Silva and Frank Mir. Ho. Lee. Schnikes.

Of course, the news of Lesnar’s return came at a cost, which oddly enough, came in the form of Ariel Helwani. You’ve undoubtedly read by now that Helwani, as well as his fellow MMAFighting cohorts Esther Lin and E. Casey Leydon, was escorted out of the building at UFC 199 and slapped with a lifetime ban simply for breaking the Lesnar story before the UFC had a chance to. We won’t detail our feelings on this absolutely ridiculous story until the dust settles, mainly because Old Dad already summed them up perfectly over at MMAJunkie, but will simply reiterate what we’ve been saying for years: Dana White is a small, small man. That Helwani’s ban has largely overshadowed what was easily one of the greatest cards in UFC history says more about his place in this sport than anything else, and we sincerely hope that the UFC is forced to backtrack after seeing the massive influx of support that Helwani has received in the days since. (Also, where was all that support when WE got banned, you arseholes?!!!)

But back to the story at hand. Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt are going to throw hands at UFC 200, and the resulting chaos may very well cause a rupture in the space-time continuum. We just hope that no one breaks this reality-altering potential story before the UFC, lest they find themselves on the outside looking in alongside hoodlums and miscreants like, well, us.

Fight Night 88 Highlights/Results: Garbrandt Sleeps Almeida, Stephens Upsets Barao + More

(via UFC on FOX)

With last weekend’s Fight Night 88 main event matchup between Cody Garbrandt and Thomas Almeida, we were being promised a glimpse at the future of the bantamweight division regardless of who won. More of us may have been banking on the latter to emerge as that future champion, sure, but it would be hard to discredit either fighter as anything but a top contender following an impressive win.

Given Almeida’s tendency to get rocked at least once in every one of his UFC fights thus far, one would assume that his camp would have placed an emphasis on head movement and staying off the line against a similarly devastating puncher like Garbrandt. Then again, this is Chute Box we’re talking about after all, so it’s likely that their gameplan for the fight never stretched beyond “swing for the goddamn fences and hope you land first.” As such, Almeida’s first round KO loss to the Team Alpha Male up-and-comer demonstrated that, as dynamic as the young Brazilian may be offensively, he still has a bit of work to do defensively. Live and learn.

Full results and highlights for Fight Night 88 are after the jump.

Live and learn.

What a fall from grace it’s been for Renan Barao. The former bantamweight kingpin was pummeled right out of his division in back-to-back appearances against TJ Dillashaw, and his featherweight debut against Jeremy Stephens in the co-main event of Fight Night 88 didn’t exactly sell him as a future champion of that division either. Despite a strong showing in the opening round, Barao seemed almost insistent on gassing himself out in the second and third with failed takedown attempts, and in doing so, allowed the veteran Stephens to find his rhythm in the exchanges and bust the Brazilian open on multiple occasions. Like Florian said, Barao may not be a broken fighter, but he’s definitely a defeated one at this point.

There wasn’t really much else to write home about on Fight Night 88, however, and the UFC on FOX channel has likewise opted against uploading any more highlight videos. With that in mind, let’s just touch on a few other noteworthy moments:

– Even in victory, Rick Story was left with a gruesome reminder of Tarec Saffiedine’s kicking abilities.

– After all that trash he talked, Aljamain Sterling just couldn’t get it done against “Mr. Tate” Bryan Caraway. The only thing worse than his performance? The absolute garbage takes on Twitter that came in the aftermath.

–Erik Koch looked like a goddamn man possessed against Shane Campbell and showed next to no signs of the ring rust you’d expect from a guy coming off his *second* two year injury. His post-fight mean mug = absolute savagery.
