Jamie Varner vs. Donald CerroneThe long-awaited rematch between World Extreme Cagefighting rivals Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone is set for WEC 51 on September 30, a major fight card that will demonstrate the WEC’s ability to put on big events even as its top star, Urijah Faber, nurses a leg injury.

Varner announced the Cerrone rematch on his web site, and the addition of that fight not only makes WEC 51 one of the best fight cards of the rest of the year in MMA, it also provides some hints about where the WEC is headed for the rest of the year, and what a future WEC pay-per-view card might look like.

In 1973, Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes,” a tennis match that would go down as one of the 20th Century’s most significant sporting events.

Is MMA ready for a similar event?

Randy Couture will be on the cover of EA Sports’ upcoming MMA video game, and he’s the only active UFC star who will appear in the EA game, rather than THQ’s UFC Undisputed game. But while Couture’s star power is the most important thing he brings to the EA game, he also brought something else: Strategy.

On Tuesday EA released some details about the game’s “career mode,” which will allow players to get better by training with Couture, Bas Rutten, Pat Miletich, Rickson Gracie and others. And EA’s Randy Chase told MMAFighting.com that Couture was particularly involved in providing an element of realism to the way a fighter’s career progresses.

Winning three heavyweight kickboxing bouts in one night to claim the K-1 World Grand Prix Final title may be the most physically demanding endeavor in combat sports. As a four-time World Grand Prix champion, Semmy Schilt knows that well.

The physical demands of the K-1 World Grand Prix are the reason that the 36-year-old Schilt is making a point of preserving himself this year. Schilt has stepped into the ring just once since winning the 2009 title on December 5, and he says he doesn’t expect to fight again until it’s time to begin the path toward defending his title in a Final 16 bout in September.

“The last time I fought was on the fourth of April, and now I am waiting on my next fight, in the Final 16 this year,” Schilt told MMAFighting.com. “I don’t have many injuries so its not necessary to preserve myself, but now I am training without pressure, and that feels good.”
