Fabricio Werdum defeated Fedor Emelianenko on Saturday night in what may have been the biggest upset in MMA history at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. The video is here.

Fedor entered the fight with a 31-1 record, and the one loss was highly controversial, as he was cut with an illegal elbow strike. But there’s nothing controversial about this one: Werdum is the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner in the world, and he showed it by sinking in both a triangle choke and an arm bar and forcing Fedor to tap at the 1:09 mark of the first round.

Gilbert Melendez did it again this week.

Melendez, the Strikeforce lightweight champion, pointed out that there’s a great fight to be made between himself and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, a fight that both fighters want and that MMA fans across America would mark on their calendars as a can’t-miss. And he pointed out an uncomfortable truth about MMA: A fight like that doesn’t get made just because the fighters and the fans want it. It only gets made if the promoters and the TV people agree to it.

UFC President Dana White and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta have both said many times that they want Fedor Emelianenko in the Octagon. But they’re not trying to accomplish that by developing a positive relationship with Fedor.

Instead, they’re going to try to demonstrate to Fedor that they’re the major players on the global MMA scene, and that if Fedor won’t play ball with them, they’ll make sure major sponsors won’t play ball with him.

Fedor Can’t Explain Why His Opponents Can’t Get Past Losing to Him

Brett Rogers lost to Fedor Emelianenko, then looked terrible in his next fight. Andrei Arlovski lost to Fedor Emelianenko, then looked terrible in his next fight. Tim Sylvia lost to Fedor Emelianenko, then looked terrible in his next fight. Noticing a trend here?

Emelianenko himself says there’s nothing to it. But there’s no doubt about it: Of Emelianenko’s last eight opponents, not a single one has notched a significant victory since losing to Fedor. You have to go all the way back to Fedor’s victory over Mirko Cro Cop almost five years ago to find anyone who has accomplished much of anything in the ring or cage after fighting Fedor.

One of the dilemmas that increasingly seems to frustrate both MMA promoters and fans is the refusal of friends and teammates to fight each other. The guys who train with Greg Jackson don’t want to fight each other. The guys who train at American Kickboxing Academy don’t want to fight each other. The guys who train at Black House don’t want to fight each other. Babalu Sobral says he doesn’t want the Strikeforce light heavyweight title fight he just earned because he’s friends with the champion, Mo Lawal. And so on.

That’s why it was nice to read, in Jake Rossen’s expansive look at the 2000 Pride openweight tournament, the words of Mark Coleman on the subject.
