For decades, T.J. O’Brien’s family has been involved in horse jumping.
A grandmother, for instance, taught Olympians in the sport. His mother is heavily involved, which meant O’Brien grew up around horses in the heart of Iowa. Even O’Brien admits that he did his share, but while he was a small-school three-sport athlete, he just couldn’t maintain the horses.
“That was the reason I didn’t like it,” O’Brien said, “I just didn’t feel like you needed enough skill.”

Purists have cried hypocrisy over news of boxing champion James Toney’s new Ultimate Fighting Championship contract.
The 41-year-old boxing veteran got the usual line on Wednesday for well-known outsiders who make their way to MMA: he’s an opportunist just looking to make a buck, he couldn’t make it in his sport and can’t go anywhere else, and he’ll be obliterated by the “real fighters.”
But several UFC heavyweights MMAjunkie.com spoke to Wednesday – including Paul Buentello, Chris Tuchscherer, Pat Barry and Brendan Schaub – didn’t condemn Toney for the move. Most, in fact, had more positive things to say than negative.

WEC matchmaker Sean Shelby shares a portfolio of fighters looking to fight in the 155-pound division with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.
Since this past March, the lightweight division remains the only weight class in which the two Zuffa, LLC-owned promotions share a common division. Why the overlap?
