WEC 47 co-headliner Miguel Torres says he’s become a “better, smarter” fighter

At Saturday’s WEC 47 event, Miguel Torres competes in his seventh career World Extreme Cagefighting bout, fights for the first time since losing his bantamweight belt to Brian Bowles, and in his eyes, returns to the cage as a new fighter.

Last month Torres spoke to MMAjunkie.com about how he hopes a WEC 47 victory over Joseph Benavidez will lead to an immediate Bowles rematch.

After all, that knockout loss to Bowles in August 2009 served as a wake-up call for Torres, who now warns the rest of the WEC’s 135-pound division that he’s even more dangerous that he was before.

“Strongest Man” Mariusz Pudzianowski announced for May 7 KSW XIII card

Highly touted super heavyweight rookie Mariusz Pudzianowski (1-0), a five-time World’s Strongest Man champion, looks to follow up his successful December 2009 mixed-martial-arts pro debut with a follow-up fight on May 7.

Officials from KSW, a promotion based in Pudzianowski’s native Poland, today announced the 33-year-old returns at KSW XIII, though an opponent has not been revealed.

The booking means a potential April 23 matchup with ex-UFC champ Tim Sylvia (25-6) is now unlikely.

Poll results: Champ Brian Bowles tapped 4-to-1 favorite over Dominick Cruz at WEC 47

Brian Bowles is well aware of the old saying that a champion isn’t really a champion until he’s defended his belt.

The WEC bantamweight title-holder said he doesn’t really buy into the belief, but when it comes to his main-event fight with Dominick Cruz at next week’s WEC 47 event, readers don’t think it’ll matter.

In our most recent MMAjunkie.com/”Inside MMA” poll, the vast majority of voters predicted a successful title defense for the champ.
