The Sunday Junkie: Jan. 24 edition

The MMA world let out a sigh of relief this past week when UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar announced he’ll soon return to the world’s top promotion and one of the deepest heavyweight divisions in recent memory.

And while The Sunday Junkie, MMAjunkie.com’s weekly reader-feedback feature, received many submissions about Lesnar and the impact of his return, our winning entry focused on another topic.

That submission came from Maryland-based reader Gary Heussler, who made a compelling argument as to why 2010 could be the year of UFC middleweight champion and establish “The Spider” as the greatest fighter in MMA history.

Tachi Palace Fights offers online PPV on Feb. 4, MMAjunkie.com’s Morgan broadcasts

With an anticipated and star-studded Feb. 4 fight card, Tachi Palace Fights needed a way to bring the event to fans who can’t make the trip to California.

The organization, previously known as the Palace Fighting Championships, found a solution: online pay-per-view.

TPF executive Jeremy Luchau recently announced that “Tachi Palace Fights 3: Champions Collide,” which features a headliner of Jeff Bedard (12-2) vs. Cole Escovedo (14-4), will be available for $9.99 through GoFightLive.tv. And one familiar name will be part of the broadcasting team.

Poll results: Did Urijah Faber or Mike Brown deserve WEC title fight with Jose Aldo?

Mike Brown snapped Urijah Faber’s 13-fight win streak, took his WEC featherweight title via first-round TKO, and then battered “The California Kid” in a subsequent rematch via convincing unanimous decision.

But when Brown recently lost his belt to current champ Jose Aldo, it was Faber – not Brown – who was promised the first shot at the new title-holder.

In our latest weekly MMAjunkie.com/”Inside MMA” poll, the results of which were revealed on this past Friday’s new edition of HDNet’s weekly MMA show, we wanted to know if WEC officials made the right call by announcing Aldo vs. Faber.

The Original WWE Guy: Before Lesnar and Lashley, there was self-promoter Daniel Puder

Daniel Puder, in pausing a conversation with MMAjunkie.com about his transition from professional wrestling to mixed-martial-arts and its aftermath in a group that followed him, displayed Lesson No. 1 in marketing learned from WWE: Females.

“Hey, girls!” Puder said through the crowd at the L.A. Convention Center on Saturday afternoon during the Los Angeles Fitness Expo. “Say hi to this guy interviewing me.”

For Puder, “The Original WWE Guy” to find success during MMA’s recent explosion, it’s another day at the office, as MMAjunkie.com’s Kyle Nagel reports.
