Vasiliy Lomachenko barely has any weight to cut with just under two weeks to go before his lightweight title fight vs. Luke Campbell.
In less than two weeks, consensus #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world Vasiliy Lomachenko (13-1, 10 KOs) will take on fellow Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell (20-2, 16 KOs) for Lomachenko’s WBO and WBA lightweight titles, as well as the vacant WBC belt. It’ll be Lomachenko’s first fight in the United Kingdom, as a sell-out crowd is expected for London’s O2 Arena.
Because the WBC is sanctioning this title bout, there are mandatory weight checks for the two fighters at 30-days, 14-days, and 7-days from the fight. Per sanctioning body rules, neither fighter is allowed to be over 10% the contracted limit at 30 days, 5% at 14 days, or 3% at 7 days.
At the 14-day mark (conducted August 17th), Lomachenko evidently has barely any weight to shed. Per BoxingScene, The Ukrainian star is already at 137.1 lbs, which means he’s only got 2.1 lbs to cut over the next several days. England’s Campbell is also on point at 141.7 lbs, just inside the 14-day limit of 142 lbs. When they did their 30-day weigh-ins, Lomachenko was 144.5 lbs to Campbell’s 147.4 lbs.
Lomachenko has won world titles in three weight classes (126 lbs, 130 lbs, 135 lbs), and made the move to lightweight last year with a memorable 11th-round TKO of Jorge Linares. He’s since taken the IBF belt from Jose Pedraza and defended both the WBA and IBF titles against Anthony Crolla. Campbell is a career lightweight whose lone title shot in his career saw him lose a split decision to Linares in 2017. He has since avenged his other professional defeat, besting Yvan Mendy by decision last September.
Lomachenko vs. Campbell streams on ESPN+ in the United States and airs live on Sky Box Office in the United Kingdom. Bloody Elbow will have full coverage throughout next week, and comprehensive coverage on fight day (Saturday, August 31st) itself.
