Even if Jon Jones does move up to heavyweight, a fight with Israel Adesanya is still on the cards.
Israel Adesanya said he is prepared to move up two weight classes and fight Jon Jones if ‘Bones’ has moved up to heavyweight by the time they eventually meet.
The undefeated middleweight champion Adesanya (18-0) and current number one pound-for-pound Jones (25-1, 1NC) have exchanged words for the last few months after Adesanya promised to clean out the middleweight division then move up to fight Jones.
Talking recently to Submission Radio, Adesanya explained that despite currently fighting at 185-pounds the drastic jump up to heavyweight wouldn’t faze him.
“I saw something on Instagram that by the time he goes to heavyweight the fight will be — who gives a f-ck about weight? I’ve never given a f-ck about weight,” Adesanya said. “Since when? It’s never been an issue for me. I’ve been a heavyweight in boxing, in kickboxing. I’ll do it in again in MMA. So, it’s never been an issue for me.
“He can try and run to heavyweight, but I’ll chase him down. I’ll hunt him down if I have to.”
Jones will attempt to defend his light heavyweight title this weekend at UFC 247 against the undefeated Dominick Reyes. Meanwhile, Adesanya will aim to make the first defense of his middleweight title against Yoel Romero next month at UFC 248.
