The WBA super lightweight championship will be on the line only for Ashley Theophane, as Adrien Broner has missed weight at today’s PBC on Spike weigh-ins.

Controversial boxer Adrien Broner (31-2-1 NC, 23 KOs) is just 1 day away from a Premier Boxing Champions on Spike main event against England’s Ashley Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KOs). This is despite the fact that Broner is wanted by Ohio police on assault and robbery charges stemming from an alleged bowling alley incident in January. Washington DC’s commission still agreed to license him, with the expectation that Broner would turn himself in once he returned to Ohio.

Coming into today’s weigh-ins in Washington DC, Broner vs. Theophane was supposed to be a title defense for “The Problem”, who won the vacant WBA super lightweight (140 lbs) title against Khabib Allakhverdiev with a 12th round TKO. The problem (see what I did there?) for Broner? He didn’t make weight.

While Theophane successfully made the division limit at 140 on the nose, Broner opted not to re-weigh after initially coming in at 140.4 lbs. As a result, the WBA’s 140 lbs championship is on the line only for Theophane, and if Ashley wins then he becomes the champion. Any other result means the belt remains vacant. According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Broner will have $50,000 of his purse go to Theophane.

This is the 2nd time that Broner has lost a belt at the scales. Back in 2012, when he was a super featherweight (130 lbs), he came in 3.5 lbs overweight for his WBO title defense against Vicente Escobedo. Broner won by TKO the next night and then never fought in the weight class again. Missing weight today just adds another chapter in the craziness that is the boxing career (and life) of Adrien Broner.

PBC on Spike airs live tomorrow night from the DC Armory in Washington DC at 9 PM ET/PT.
