Eddie Mercado is joined by Fraser Coffeen to recap the historic Affliction: Banned card from July 19, 2008. Fedor club & subs Tim Sylvia in :36, Andrei Arlovski KO’s Ben Rothwell, Josh Barnett KO’s Pedro Rizzo.
After getting banned as a sponsor from the UFC, the apparel company known as Affliction decided to put on their own MMA promotion, hosting their first event, Affliction: Banned, on July 19, 2008. The debut event was headlined by the G.O.A.T. Fedor Emelianenko club and subbing former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in a sporty 36 seconds. The co-main event involved Andrei Arlovski locking horns with Ben Rothwell, becoming the first man to stop Rothwell with strikes.
Also on the card, Josh Barnett made his long awaited return to U.S. soil, KO’ing Pedro Rizzo in a rematch of a UFC 30 bout where Rizzo KO’d Barnett. On the prelims, Vitor Belfort earned an epic knockout of Terry Martin, leaving Martin sitting unconscious in between the ropes. To add a little something extra to the evening, Affliction hired legendary metal band Megadeath to play the event, which seemed to be the cherry on the top of a successful debut show. Tune in next week as we cover the 2nd, and final event of the short-lived promotion, as we discuss Affliction 2: Day of Reckoning.
