A high-profile lightweight fight between Al Iaquinta and “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone has been verbally agreed to headline UFC Ottawa later this year.
The news of this fight comes as a bit of a surprise considering all the speculation in recent months regarding a possible Conor McGregor vs. “Cowboy” fight. However, with McGregor’s unpredictable lifestyle, it looks like matchmakers looked for a different dance partner for “Raging Al”.
This is exactly the kind of fight that Iaquinta, who made an appearance on Monday’s episode of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, has been lobbying for.
Iaquinta released a statement via ESPN’s Brett Okamoto:
“I just think it’s a great fight. I’ve been watching Cowboy since his WEC days. I like these fights, fighting guys I came up watching and always wondering how I would do against them, thinking I could beat them. I have a lot of respect for Cowboy.”
“There are a lot of big fights coming up in this division. Anybody could get a big win, and see their stock skyrocket.”
