Alex Volkanovski calls for a title shot should he get a win in his next fight. The rising contender is slated to meet former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at the UFC 237 pay-per-view event.
Volkanovski has made it known that he thinks a fight against UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is on the verge of happening. Thus, if he can get past Aldo, then he wants a title shot.
As far as Frankie Edgar goes, he doesn’t mind passing him up in line for a title match opportunity. Holloway is scheduled to face Dustin Poirier for the Interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 236.
“(Edgar is) dreaming if he thinks I’d take out Aldo in his hometown and then he gets a shot in front of me,” Volkanovski told MMA Junkie. “Surely that just does not make sense.
“I feel bad for him, because I know he deserves it, especially with the whole (Brian) Ortega thing that happened. But this sport can be so unforgiving, man. But do we have sympathy out there just to let him have a title shot? I don’t think so. It’s unfortunate. I feel sorry, but mate, I’m the guy.”
The rising contender is fresh off a win over Chad Mendes on December 29, 2018 at UFC 232 when he scored a technical knockout in round two. This was his latest win that moved him to a 19-1 pro-record.
The UFC 237 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.
