Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell set for UFC Fight Night 50

The ‘Reem is ready for his return.

The veteran heavyweight from Holland will square off with Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 50. The event will be held on Sept. 5 at the Foxwoods Casino on Mashantucket Pequot tribal land near Ledyard, Conn. FOXSports.com initially reported the bout on Wednesday.

Overeem (37-13, 1 NC), a former Strikeforce and Dream champion, defeated Frank Mir via decision at UFC 169. That victory was believed to have saved his UFC career, as it came after back-to-back knockout losses.

UFC president Dana White lambasted Overeem’s performance after the fight in what many felt was an unwarranted rip job. But Overeem apparently took White’s word to heart, as he has relocated his training to the famed Jackson’s MMA in New Mexico.

Rothwell, meanwhile, has a little something to prove of his own going into the bout. The 33-year old from Wisconsin finished Brandon Vera in the third round of their UFC 164 bout. He tested positive for elevated testosterone levels following the fight and was suspended nine months by the company. Rothwell has been in a win one/lose one pattern in his past nine fights going back to 2007.
