Amanda Nunes is perfectly fine with not getting the same attention as Ronda Rousey did as UFC women’s bantamweight champion.
Ronda Rousey’s reign as UFC women’s bantamweight champion also made her one of the most renowned fighters in MMA. But it is not the type of recognition that current champion Amanda Nunes is getting.
Nunes recognizes that she may not get the same push from the UFC, as well as the same popularity and recognition from fans. And it is not something she is losing any sleep over.
“I know I’m not the beautiful girl and I don’t have the blonde hair and the blue eyes,” Nunes told Yahoo! Sports. “I am not the kind of face the UFC wants to put out there, but I’m okay with that. I’m going to live my life and be happy. If the UFC decides to promote me that would be awesome, but I trust them. The UFC knows what they are doing.”
“If they think they should promote someone else, fine. Just give me the fights and let me do my job and I will be happy. Whatever the UFC decides is fine with me. I’m just a fighter and that’s just what I want to do more than anything else: Let me fight.”
Nunes will be facing Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 215 this Saturday, September 9th, marking her second title defense. It is a fight that has been rescheduled from its original date at UFC 213 last July, when Nunes pulled out due to chronic sinusitis.
The champion had gotten a lot of flak from fans, but to these, Nunes had a simple response.
“The people who criticize, they don’t know anything about me and they aren’t going to pay my bills [if I lose because I’m sick].”
UFC 215 takes place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
