Eryk Anders was pulled from his Chris Weidman fight at the UFC 309 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City, a last-minute withdrawal that came with no explanation and left fight fans scratching their heads.

The culprit? Food poisoning, which has been known to fell fighters on fight day.

“Status update: got food poisoning Friday night and there was no way I would have been able to go out there and compete,” Anders wrote on Instagram. “Super upset I didn’t get to compete at MSG against a former champ.”

“I seriously doubt that opportunity will come around again, but it is what it is,” Anders continued. “Hopefully we can get that matchup rebooked ASAP. Thank you all for the messages of concern.”

At least it wasn’t fatal (not even kidding).

Anders (16-8, 1 NC) is just a couple of months removed from his unanimous decision win over Jamie Pickett at UFC Vegas 87 in Las Vegas. As for Weidman (16-7), he returned to the win column with a decision victory over Bruno Silva at UFC Atlantic City last March.

Hopefully UFC can rebook their middleweight showdown for this upcoming fight card.
