Anderson Silva is expected to be released from a Las Vegas hospital Sunday, just hours after undergoing emergency surgery on his left leg.
According to one of Silva’s managers, Jorge Guimaraes, Silva will be transferred to a Las Vegas hotel Sunday evening where he is expected to stay “a day or two.” The former UFC middleweight champion will then return to his home in Los Angeles.
“He’s fine,” Guimaraes said when asked how Silva was doing. “Just sad and in pain.”
Silva broke his tibia and fibula in the second round of his title fight against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 Saturday night, which forced referee Herb Dean to call the fight off and award the victory to Weidman. The UFC later confirmed via a press release that Silva underwent successful surgery after the fight.
“The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia,” the statement read. “The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery.”
Guimaraes said it was too early to speculate what this injury means for Silva’s fighting future. The Brazilian is 38 years old.
“Brasil, I’m sorry, I didn’t want to let you down,” Silva tweeted on Sunday morning. “I gave my best, I swear.”
